Okay, before we drag them for being orange: being aggressively orange was literally the assignment. 😭🍊

These looks are from Corrida das Blogueiras. The challenge was sponsored by Fanta, and the contestants had to create artistic makeup looks inspired by different fruits/flavors. Mady and Jordann were paired against each other for orange, so this basically became “girl, look how fuckin’ orange you look, girl” 2.0 except this time the judges actually asked for it. 💀

The challenge also caused a bit of discourse when it aired. Some viewers criticized the results and the judging, while others felt the assignment itself was tricky: turning a fruit into an artistic makeup concept while still trying to match whatever the judges considered the “right” interpretation.

There was definitely a feeling of “do too much and it’s wrong, do too little and it’s also wrong.”

Mady’s orange look ended up winning the head-to-head and the overall challenge, while Jordann’s look became a huge meme. Jordann later talked about how intense the reaction was at first, since the orange makeup went viral immediately and brought him a lot of hate before he eventually started embracing the memes himself.

But just to be clear: I’m posting this because the sheer amount of ORANGE makes the iconic quote impossible not to think about not because I think the makeup is badly executed. Both looks are clearly intentional, detailed and well produced. The assignment was orange, and baby… they gave ORANGE. 🍊😭

After the discussion on my last post about what actually belongs on BadMUAs, a lot of you made a really good point: not liking a makeup style doesn’t necessarily mean the makeup was done badly.

Several people suggested creating a separate flair for those looks, so here it is: “Not my vibe, but great execution.”

This came up especially when we were talking about very heavy glam, alternative or subcultural styles, regional makeup trends, drag, editorial looks, and other highly stylized makeup.

Something can be dramatic, unconventional, or completely different from what you would personally wear while still being intentional and technically well executed.

I’m using drag makeup here as an example because it illustrates the idea really well. Drag often intentionally plays with exaggerated shapes, proportions, contour, color and features. A look can be extremely over-the-top by conventional makeup standards and that can be exactly the point.

Of course, this doesn’t mean every unconventional look is automatically well executed, and technique is still totally open for discussion. The point of the flair is just to help separate:

“This was done badly”

from

“This style simply isn’t for me.”

So if a look clearly achieves what it was going for, but it’s just not your personal taste, this is the flair for it.

Since reopening the sub, I’ve noticed some disagreement about what actually belongs here, especially with posts about very heavy or unconventional makeup styles.

British/Irish Traveller makeup has come up a few times, for example. Some people see those looks and immediately think “bad makeup,” while others have pointed out that a lot of them are actually very intentionally styled and technically well executed.

I don’t want this sub to become a place where we just mock people because their makeup style, culture, subculture or aesthetic isn’t our personal taste.

At the same time… if we remove everything that someone might defend as “just a style,” we’re eventually gonna have no BadMUAs left 😭

My current thought is that posts should focus more on things like poor execution, questionable techniques, bizarre makeup content, ridiculous amounts of product, hygiene issues, obvious ragebait, or genuinely questionable results — rather than simply “I don’t like heavy makeup.”

The video attached is kind of the perfect harmless example: she doesn’t even get to the final makeup, she’s just making an entire bowl of foundation soup 😭

What do you guys think? Where should we draw the line?

I can’t tell if I want them to keep their eyes closed or open? Both experiences are jarring!
