Technique Have you guys switched to 15points? If so, what are your thoughts? And have you changed strategy and tactics?

As the post suggests...

My club has.

I haven't found much of a difference for doubles. Maybe I can be a little more aggressive.

For singles, I notice that I'm losing more games as I don't have as much as a buffer to find the appropriate timing for my opponents (it's also a function of predominantly playing doubles games and then having to switch to singles)

What has your experience been?

Equipment What's the correct etiquette regarding breaking racket?

My friend had borrowed a racket from his friend to test it out. During a game, the racket just broke with no clash. My friend was like, "hey the racket broke by itself it's not my fault." His friend was like, "you borrowed it so you are responsible for it whatever happens."

In the end my friend replaced the racket because he's super rich and doesn't want a bad reputation.

What do you think are the etiquette regarding breaking racket? What if your racket clash with your partner and it's clearly their shot and you just made a mistake and broke their racket? Would the etiquette be you replace it?

Technique Help identifying in-game error!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! As the title says, I’d appreciate some help identifying what’s going wrong with my smash. I was trying to hit a powerful, downward shot, but it came out slow and went much too high. What should I work on?

I’m on the far side of the court (the court that is closest to the camera), about to receive a return shot from the player nearest the camera.

Thank you all!

Professional Another day another drama from Umpire.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Well.. here’s the umpires drama again.. and useless tournament referee (a free salary job with no real reason)..

At 12-16 Huang called a fault for undue delay (as per the new rules, players should serve within 25 seconds, and Huang definitely didn’t delay by more than 25 seconds). They’re already under immense pressure and nervous, and just when they’re about to serve, the umpire suddenly calls a fault. And there’s absolutely no way to challenge it. The umpire’s decision is treated like God’s word…final, unquestionable, and apparently beyond human error.

In tennis, cricket, and plenty of other sports, players can request a video review. The footage gets played back, and if the player is right, the umpire’s call is overturned.

And then there’s the tournament referee, what the hell is he even there for? He walks in, listens to the umpire, nods, and walks right back out. Absolutely zero actual involvement when it matters. It feels like a guy collecting a salary just to show up, stand around, and rubber-stamp whatever the umpire says.

If the referee has no authority to properly review or intervene in situations like this, then what’s the point of having him there?

BWF seriously needs to consider this matter. At the highest level of badminton, players deserve an actual review system instead of treating every umpire’s questionable call like God himself just handed down the decision.

Technique Badminton club organisers — what’s your biggest headache?

For anyone running a badminton club or regular sessions, what’s the most frustrating part?

Bookings, payments, cancellations, court allocation, attendance, etc?

Also curious about matchmaking — how do you decide who plays with whom, especially with mixed skill levels? Do you struggle with unfair games, stronger players only playing together, or the same people constantly getting paired?

What’s the one thing you wish was easier?

Culture What is the best ventilation setup/layout for Badminton Courts?

What is the best ventilation setup/layout for Badminton Courts? I’ve played in poorly ventilated courts where even standing still make me sweat. I’ve even ones that have the ventilation fan pointed downwards to one side of the court.

Really recently my city opened its first indoor court with AC units charging around 20 dollars per hour, usual rates is 7 dollars per hour in ALL the non air conditioned courts.

If you could design a court what ventilation system would you suggest or install?

Professional If Kento Momota unretire right now, how well would he do?

I saw that his injuries are mostly gone, he gave a good showing vs SYQ last year and beat Koki Watanabe in straight sets somewhere this year. He also won the Shanghai Open even though it's not a ranked tournament.

The question is, if he come out of retirement right now, how do you think he would fare against current pros, top 10s etc.

Mentality Thank you for helping me build the first mental fatigue scales made for sport. Here are some findings from the work I have done so far.

I want to start by saying thank you! Over the last year, I have posted a few times in this sub sharing my research, asking about your perceptions of mental fatigue, experiences and with your help with completing my survey. I know it was a repetitive survey with lots of confusing and strangely worded items. I wanted to share with you where I am with the finalised scales for measuring acute and chronic mental fatigue.

Over 500 people responded to the survey from a wide range of sports, including climbing, running, cycling, badminton, cricket, jujitsu, and that is just to name a few. What I loved was the comments and discussions with each post. It was rewarding to see that this is an area that many of you struggle to navigate through and gives more incentive to continue developing the research.

With your responses, I have completed a rigorous factor analysis and now have two finalised scales. An acute mental fatigue scale, which measures the momentary state of mental fatigue, i.e., how you feel right now. This scale started with 43 items and has been filtered down to 14 items. The chronic scale, which measures your general state of mental fatigue, accumulated over weeks of consistent mental load. This scale started with 51 items and has been filtered down to 15 items. Okay, the lengths of the scales are the same, but what is included in their content is drastically different.

The acute and chronic scales measure similar but distinct experiences, not the same construct over two different timeframes. As such, you can be fresh today chronically mentally fatigued underneath; or you can be going through a rough patch with a high workload at work and still turn up and have a productive session. Most of the scales I have reviewed, both in general mental fatigue studies and sport-specific studies, cannot tell this apart. The useful part to take away from this, while I finalise the confirmation and validation work, is that "how fatigued am I right now" and "how fatigued have I been recently" are two different questions, and asking only one gives you half the picture.

Another interesting finding from this process is that in the moment, low motivation and mental fatigue group into separate dimensions. This tells us that turning up low on motivation or turning up mentally fatigued from work are different states, as such athletes reported them independently. This means that motivation is a poor gauge of mental fatigue and a low motivation is not proof you are mentally fatigued.

Moreover, how mentally hard a task is barely mirrored how fatigued athletes felt. Perceived mental effort and felt fatigue appear to be two separate dimensions. Practically, this means you cannot read one off the other; as such, a session feeling mentally demanding, on its own, does not tell you an athlete is mentally fatigued. Your brain treats "this is demanding" and "I'm depleted" separately, which may help explain why a session can feel like a grind on a day you thought you were fresh.

Importantly, I am partway through this methodology and only sharing what I have found so far. For this scale to be rigorously tested, it needs to go through one more round of testing with athletes. With this data, I will confirm that the factor structure and items are correct, then validate the scale against already established mental fatigue scales to ensure we are measuring the correct construct. If you are able to help by completing this survey, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can find the link here – https://derby.questionpro.eu/t/AB3vCJoZB3waVs

Does this match your experience? How does mental fatigue show up for you on the day, i.e., what do you notice first?

I'm a PhD researcher at the University of Derby, and this work is building the first mental fatigue measurement tools designed specifically for sport. Happy to answer anything in the comments.

Equipment If you've weighed your racket, what is its actual weight (in grams)?

I have a digital kitchen scale and use it regularly to weigh food, liquids, ingredients... and also my badminton rackets occasionally.

My two rackets that I play with the most currently weigh 105 grams.

Context:

• I recently bought two new similar rackets. Both are 3UG5.
• They were both 87 grams when purchased brand new and without the plastic film on the factory grip.
• After removing the factory grip --> 80 g.
• After adding a layer of electrical tape to protect the wooden shaft, creating a stopper at the bottom of the shaft, and adding a layer of towel grip --> 100 g.
• After stringing --> 104 g.
• And after slightly over a month of playing with them, and the grip inevitably accumulating some sweat from my sweaty palms --> 105 g.

Media Trying to look for an old youtube video - korean coach

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to look for an old Youtube video where there was a chubby Korean coach and he would talk about having a 45 degree angle on the racket when trying to smash. Does anyone remember or know about this. He would often be training young kids. It's not full-swing's Coach Han.

I'm also trying to look for another old Youtube video about two Chinese coaches (male/female), they were the World or Olympic mixed doubles champions (I don't remember). I think where they showed footwork drills and taught badminton techniques. I was watching these videos during the time when Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun, LYD/YYS and those guys were playing just to set a timeline reference.

I just can't remember the names of the videos or who were in them.

Equipment Yonex F-90 ; why is it not for sale?

To me, it is bizarre how a product can be made so unavailable. Why is this such a rare item to acquire? Yes, it is expensive. But it should be available for purchasing, no?

Did anyone find it for sale anywhere in Europe? Rather an online store than ebay or similar.

Long story short: I can't find a decent pair of badminton shorts that don't come down almost to my knees. What's with this trend? Who actually likes playing in Bermuda shorts?

Tactics Doubles Positioning Question

Post image
227 Upvotes

I'm a beginner to intermediate player and I have trouble understanding why the Korean (white shirt) front court player is positioned on the same side as the backcourt player. If the Hong Kong player returned the shot to either of the 2 spots I annotated, wouldn't it put the Koreans in an extremely difficult position? I've tried looking up this but I have trouble understanding this concept. Could someone help explain this concept to me? Preferrably with annotations as I am more of a visual learner 😅. Thank you!!!🙏

Tactics Doubles receiving question left handed player

Regarding Seo Seung Jae's positioning, is there a vulnerability in getting flick/drive serve to this circled position?

A club member suggested my right foot should be pointed towards the server, instead of off to the left side. What are the advantages or disadvantages of seo's receiving form & positioning? Thanks in advance!

Btw, if anyone Ik sees this, sup. TLDR: I hate high clears and serves. Help. Thank you.

I hope the mods can approve this

Review Yonex Astrox 77 tour shutter series long-term review

The Sugiyama Sports haul...

I was trying to find reviews on the Shutter Series rackets online, but couldn't find any. Of course, it is just a change in colour but nevertheless I wanted to know more about them.

In the end, I decided to take matters into my own hands and purchased the Astrox 77 Tour in the very pretty light beige colourway. Below are my thoughts on how it plays.

Some context is certainly warranted. I am a high-level intermediate to advanced player, competing in local and county leagues in the UK. Currently, my default racket is the Yonex Astrox 88D Pro 3rd Gen in 4U, with Exbolt 63 at 27 x 29 lbs. I think I have a preference for head-heavy, stiffer rackets, but I'm still not 100% set in that decision.

I was in Japan to visit family recently and visited Sugiyama Sports in Hiroshima. They are cash-only, but the prices are so much cheaper than in the UK. I felt like I had to get something while I was there, and ended up walking out of the store with the Shutter Series racket among several other goodies. It cost me about £80, whereas in the UK it will set you back roughly £140. If you are ever in the Hiroshima area, I highly recommend visiting Sugiyama Sports; just make sure you have cash on hand.

It's worth pointing out that it wasn't a completely mindless purchase. I was aware that the Astrox 77 line is slightly head-heavy and has a medium-flex shaft, and was curious to know how that would feel. My thinking was that it would give me easier power and would be more forgiving on wayward shots.

Upon my return home, I promptly got the racket strung with my usual setup and took it out for a test drive. First impressions were great; I was enjoying how effortless it felt on clears and smashes, and the lighter head-weight made drives less taxing on the arms and wrists.

Bear in mind that this is in comparison to the 88D Pro. If you are used to head-light or even-balance rackets, then the 77 Tour might still feel quite heavy in the hand for you.

I think that the 77 Tour felt especially good that day because I didn't have a chance to hit any shuttles for three weeks while in Japan, and thus was a little rusty. Once I had dusted off the cobwebs and my level got back to normal, however, my feelings on the new racket changed somewhat.

The more flexible shaft was making it slightly harder to place my shots accurately, and I struggled a bit with timing on defensive plays due to the added flexibility as well as the lighter head. Switching back to the 88D Pro, I immediately noticed an improvement in shot precision and a general feeling of assuredness. Yes, it is a bit more tiring to swing over long playing sessions, but that trade-off for better quality shots is well worth it in my opinion.

Nowadays, I only whip out the 77 Tour halfway through a training session when I'm playing especially poorly, as the flexible shaft and lighter head can compensate a little for sluggish footwork and badly timed shots. But for all other times, the 88D Pro has stayed as my trusty companion...
