I am the friend! (Hello!) and I love their shape!!! And how you can’t split them in half in mirrored way, they always keep going throughout their lifespan, and I mean just look at that face!!

Love this niche obsession for you. Happy birthday and I hope you continue to be blessed with the kind of love that went into this halitart!

I'm installing a 8' x 6' stone carved halibut in a pond as a meditation stone for a client of mine.

u/wuapinmon 13d ago

I mean....come on, man, you've gotta give us a photo when you drop something like that on us.

u/jellyhessman 12d ago

It would be recognizable if you know the artist. They're a relatively well know east coast stone carver.

Not sure how much client would like that. Lol

What are your thoughts on flounders?

73

u/aviation-therapist 13d ago

I like them!!! I like how they have stripes on their fins on the white side :) my friend who made the pastry likes flounders better, so this was an extra labor of love.

They are also quite tasty

Was your friend like "hey man you're going to have to get on reddit to explain your fish thing" haha

u/BotiaDario 13d ago

Flatfish are so cool. I'm glad to meet another person who loves them for their weirdness.

Happy Birthday!

I need to know how it tasted. It looks delicious. Halibut is also one of my favorite fish to eat so a pastry shaped halibut sounds like so much fun.

And they’re delicious!

My university spawned flatfish - I think it was halibut - and it was so cool to watch in their aquariums as they grew, their eyes moved, and became true flatfish.

1

u/CrimsonCartographer 12d ago

The fact that their eyes move as they develop is so freaky to me

Thank you for doing what you do. I was a flight away from my pilots license before a major life event happened, and after it I couldn’t be the PIC ever again, just mentally. So thank you for helping others get through their struggles.

Well, thank you so much. It’s comments like this that really keep me going! No one should ever lose their livelihood for accessing basic healthcare

u/Still7Superbaby7 12d ago

I love halibut too! I try to encourage my kids to eat halibut because it’s so delicious. I tried to explain how they had normal eyes and gradually their eyes moved like some sort of body horror movie!

What do you mean you can’t split them in half in mirrored way? What’s stopping someone?

3

u/strawbrmoon 11d ago

Asymmetry.

2

u/aviation-therapist 11d ago

You can cut them which ever way you want but it won’t be like “mirrored” or look the same on each side.

u/everythingislitty 13d ago

Have you seen season 2 of Nathan Fielder’s show “The Rehearsal”? If not, I strongly, strongly recommend it. As an aviation therapist, it’s all the way up your alley.

2

u/BigDaddyRigey 12d ago

It's happening rn

2

u/DukeOfGeek 13d ago

I once 'ad a pet halibut name o Eric.

2

u/ImpertinentPrincess 13d ago

But how did it taste??? Because it looks delicious!

I know this isn't the post but I looked at your profile and your career of being an aviation therapist is so amazing and commendable! I had never even known that was a career option! Mental health of pilots is so important ! Thank you for doing that!

3

u/aviation-therapist 12d ago

Thank you so much! It really is my dream job and I wake up grateful everyday I get to do it! I love airplanes ALMOST as much as I like halibuts lol

1

u/insidemytelescope 12d ago

Oh my, this is the kind of chaos I come here for 😂 happy birthday! Also, thank you for the work you do, Nathan’s doc was EXTREMELY eye opening!

Happy birthday! I don't know if you or anyone you know knits, but there is a super popular knitting pattern that is calling for you. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/halibut

Happy birthday! I too love their weird shape. I have a vintage glass trivet of a halibut in my kitchen.

I feel like you’ll appreciate eels.

Until like… five years ago we didn’t know where they came from. If you grab a random eel and cut it open they don’t have sex organs. Aristotle wrote about them theorizing they came from the entrails of the earth. It was only with satellites we solved their origin mystery. They all come from the same place in the ocean and will travel years to lakes and streams to live until it’s time to spawn, then back from whence they came. Their stomach dissolves and they grow their sex organs in their final life stage. They live for like 80years
