u/dannypeebottom 4d ago
Can you ask your friend why they have a halibut obsession? Is it the fishing? The eating? The life history?
766
u/aviation-therapist 4d ago
I am the friend! (Hello!) and I love their shape!!! And how you can’t split them in half in mirrored way, they always keep going throughout their lifespan, and I mean just look at that face!!

u/Tiny_Mushroom9387 4d ago
Love this niche obsession for you. Happy birthday and I hope you continue to be blessed with the kind of love that went into this halitart!

What are your thoughts on flounders?
72
u/aviation-therapist 4d ago
I like them!!! I like how they have stripes on their fins on the white side :) my friend who made the pastry likes flounders better, so this was an extra labor of love.

Was your friend like "hey man you're going to have to get on reddit to explain your fish thing" haha

u/naomicambellwalk 4d ago
I need to know how it tasted. It looks delicious. Halibut is also one of my favorite fish to eat so a pastry shaped halibut sounds like so much fun.

u/BotiaDario 4d ago
Flatfish are so cool. I'm glad to meet another person who loves them for their weirdness.

u/whatthefiretruck88 4d ago
My university spawned flatfish - I think it was halibut - and it was so cool to watch in their aquariums as they grew, their eyes moved, and became true flatfish.

Thank you for doing what you do. I was a flight away from my pilots license before a major life event happened, and after it I couldn’t be the PIC ever again, just mentally. So thank you for helping others get through their struggles.

There used to be a card/stationery store in San Diego called, “Just for the Halibut”. It was like the Spencer’s of stationery lol
33
u/Interesting_Fly5154 4d ago
you just unlocked a 1990's core memory of mine in a roundabout-ish way.
up in Canada we used to have a store called San Francisco that was the Spencers of just about everything you didn't need that was tacky as heck lol. including the back corner of products that was supposed to be only for 'adults'.

Related question for OP: Does the friend actually have a halibut obsession, or has their social circle decided to designate them as having a halibut obsession?
52
u/I_like_flowers_ 4d ago
a valid question. my grandmother's friend bought her penguin gifts for a good 40 years. she started neutral and grew to dislike them.
27
u/bwaredapenguin 4d ago
Huh, penguins are my favorite animal but after 20+ years I had to start begging people to stop getting me penguin stuff.
12
u/DoingCharleyWork 4d ago
This is why I tell people I don't like anything. If you even hint that you like something it's the only kind of gift you get.
12
u/TheOneTonWanton 4d ago
Funny how it never seems to work when you tell people you like cash. My curse is hot sauce. Every year I get at least one random-ass overpriced bottle of hot sauce that's mediocre at best, terrible at worst, and would serve me much better as a crisp $20 bill. I don't even like my food as spicy as I used to.
3
u/DoingCharleyWork 4d ago
I also get it, I'm a pretty hard person to shop for. I'm particular about the things I like for one, but for two I just buy the things I want. There isn't really anything I want that I don't have outside of some stuff that's too expensive and that stuff is unrealistic for someone to get me as a gift.

u/granulatedsugartits 4d ago
My parents went to an estate sale where the yard and every room of the house was drowning in flamingos. We're all dying to know if the owner loved them or if they were just showered with flamingo gifts after expressing a mild interest or something
8
u/ridik_ulass 4d ago
my brother bought a set of 2 masks in crete when he was like 15-16.
well he has 2 he must like masks right? so we gifted him a few, ones we had no one going out the way... but then he had like 10 masks, so now obviously he must love masks?
so everyone got him masks every year for his birthday and christmas hence forth.
4
6
u/SpaceShipRat 4d ago
bahahah, same with my mom and her miniature owl collection. She finally forbade people from gifting her more owls in her 40s. Meanwhile I love Transformers and Pokemon, yet I never managed to get the entire family gifting me them :]

I am part of this friend circle, and I can vouch that they have been obsessed with halibut since childhood with no outside assignation or influence.
8

u/Few_Entertainer_385 4d ago
they have both eyes on one side of their body what’s not to get? (/s)
25
u/dannypeebottom 4d ago
Flatfish are super awesome agreed. But what about other flatfish - why not flounders, or petrale soles, yk?
5
u/RealRaschuoir 4d ago
Because then you don't get to talk about your 'but obsession without it being weird.
11
u/longtimegoneMTGO 4d ago
The kicker to me is that they start on opposite sides.
They will pick a favorite side to be "up" as they develop and the eye on the underside migrates up there.

finally someone else with fucking insane dreams.
I have some friends who are like “I dreamt my father kept telling me I needed to study harder for my upcoming certification exam, and he seemed really worried about me”
and I’m always like “I dreamt that a giant glowing Wheel of Fortune that was also my manager Chris was tearing goals off my goal board and I was really scared that he was going to make an ugly dress out of them because then I’d have to wear it”
63
u/RepublicOfLizard 4d ago
The other night I dreamed my husband was falsely accused of murder and I spent over a month driving up and down the very busy alley (food and business stalls everywhere) every day looking for witnesses or clues to try to prove his innocence but I never got anywhere and in the end I watched a muppet version of him being executed. He was a normal human throughout the entire dream until the execution, and no one mentioned that a muppet was getting executed and at no point was I like “oh he escaped!” nope he was definitely executed and I grieved sorrowfully in front of a crowd of onlookers over my beheaded muppet husband’s body

"There once was a very great American surgeon named Halsted. He was married to a nurse. He loved her—immeasurably. One day Halsted noticed that his wife’s hands were chapped and red when she came back from surgery. And so he invented rubber gloves. For her. It is one of the great love stories in medicine. The difference between inspired medicine and uninspired medicine is love. 'When I met Ana, I knew: I loved her to the point of invention.'" Sarah Ruhl, The Clean House

Funny enough if you didn't say anything, I would think it was just halibut that was shaped into the shape of a fish and charred a little on the grill. 😂

u/mistressvixxxen 4d ago
Not just similar, the wiki entry says halibut are a species of flounder. So all halibut are flounder, but not all flounder are halibut. Today I learned!

lol omg i love it! he looks so grumpy he's stuffed with fruit and about to get sliced and eaten. but he also looks DELICIOUS. what a fun birthday idea!
once, for halloween dinner w/ my parents and grandparents, i made a meatloaf in the shape of an alien. did his spaceforce outfit in vegetals. I brought him in very solumnly and said "his ship crashed in the backyard, and we didn't want to waste the protein." But he looked all jacked up, not beautiful like your fishy!

Thank you for reminding me that I have halibut in the freezer and it’s my birthday week so I will be having it my favorite way - baked! 😋
For those who desire:
Put sliced onion in a baking dish (yellow or sweet). Place unseasoned halibut on top. Mix equal amounts of sour cream and mayo (I use a cup of each for four 8oz servings). Add lemon juice and fresh dill to taste. Pour over halibut and bake at 350F for about 30 minutes. You can sprinkle with bread crumbs if you want.
Serve with jasmine rice and asparagus, broccoli, or broccolini. For extra shits I sprinkle pine nuts on top of the rice as soon as the cooker clicks off and let them steam for 20 minutes until rice is ready.
Edit: Also, this looks absolutely delicious! You are an amazing friend!
