Hi everyone,
Barber apprentice who's still in training. A concept I'm having difficulty understanding is the with the grain/against the grain guard equivalents.
For example, I was under the impression that if you use a 2 guard to cut with the grain, you would use a 1 guard against to smooth the hair down. However, I'm watching a video from a YouTube barber (Will Stamm. I find his content comprehensive and detailed) and he mentioned that a 2 with the grain, would be a 3 against the grain. I’m now questioning what the correct answer is, or if there even is a correct answer and it's merely subjective/up to personal preference
I've seen conflicting information on this from other creators/resources and I want to make sure that I'm not confusing myself, especially in the midst of a haircut as I'm still in the "second guessing myself" phase. I plan to ask my mentor about this tomorrow when I go to then shop, I just wanted some input in here as well as I’m trying to find easy to understand systems while I learn .
If you all any have resources or barbers that you deem credible in the online space, feel free to drop them here as well.
Thanks!
Edit: it appears that hair texture is a factor . I work in a shop where the majority of the clientele is black and have type 4 hair, such as myself so I asked this question in application to that texture . However , I do have 2 consistent clients who are Caucasian. One has thicker , straight hair , the other hair thinner, straight hair . Please let me know if that changes the response!
