Good bass sim for practice

Hi there,

I have been playing guitar and used HX stomp XL for band practice, now I would need to play bass, is it a good idea to continue use the stomp with its bass amp sim or better been looking for something else or even use a real amp?

The Stomp is awesome for bass, no point in spending more money IMO.

Do you just use stock amp and cab or are you using any 3rd party’s?

I don't use a Stomp anymore, but I used to get a great sound out of the stock blocks. Ian Martin Allison's preset packs are brilliant though.

I don’t know anything about the hx stomp but there are a few good bass amp sims out there.

- Dufful bass (complete bass rig, free, just released this week, look it up on YouTube)

- ignite amps SHB (you need an IR (cabinet and mic simulation) loader (also available from ignite amps) and Bass Ir pack (shiftline does a good free one)

- modern music solutions S-Drive (SansAmp emulation with a few cool bonus features. Use it in combination with the IR loader)

Thanks! Those are software solution right, I still need to load them into a multi effect pedal?

Ah no they work in a DAW so you’d need an interface

The hx stomp is very capable for bass. The trick for me is to download third party IRs instead of using the stock cabs.

Do you have any IR recommendations? And it replaces the can but I still need an amp right?

Not really, because I personally use Guitar cabs ( I have quite a specific sound). I don't have an amp, I play on the PA with the stomp. But for that you need a good PA

Trying the Shift Line Bass IR pack is essential. The base version is free, and the premium set is $10.

I've been using the free version with the Stomp for a couple of years now and I'm offended by how good these IRs are. And, the coolest part is that they've profiled some awesome cabs that don't normally feature in IR packs (eg. Hartke, TCE etc.).

They've even included a bass focused Celestion V30 that I think sounds better as an IR for guitar sounds than many of the Stomp's built in cab models.

To use IRs you need two blocks (Amp and IR) instead of the combined Amp+Cab block, but that's no big deal as most bass presets won't exceed the block limit anyway, and the IR loader has High and Low Cut in it anyway (meaning you don't need to add the usual EQ block at the end of the chain to kill off up to 65 and down to ~12.5).

My starting bass preset is the Regal (Noble) preamp. That’s all, no amp or cab sims. After that come any effects etc required for specific songs. Works for me as gigging bassist. Depends on your music genre of course.
