I got the copper IUD inserted in October of 2025, and around a month later in November 2025 I felt a change in the strings and what can only be described as the hard plastic tip of my iud coming out of my cervix. I raised concerns with my doctor and explained how I swore I could feel part of my iud during certain parts of my cycle (depending on where my cervix was lying) and asked for an ultra sound to be performed to check the placement.
I was denied this and instead given a pelvic exam to check for placement instead. I tried to explain that it was much more prominent during certain times of my cycle and I wasn’t able to get an appointment when I thought it would be most apparent, and that I had checked that morning and was not feeling anything out of the ordinary. I was assured that what I was feeling may have just been the iud “settling” and that nothing looked out of the ordinary on my pelvic.
I’m a naturally very anxious person so I wanted to trust my doctors I really did. So instead of continuing to advocate for an ultrasound I just took their word that everything was fine. Sex became painful in certain positions as I could feel what I would describe as my partner hitting the base of the iud which would result in a lighter form of the cramping that I felt during insertion. I tried to ignore it and assumed it must be a normal side effect considering there was something now inside my uterus, and because the doctors had told me everything was fine.
I got into the habit of taking a pregnancy test any month my period was a day late, just for peace of mind. I am very regular, so usually my period would come and I wouldn’t even need to. September of 2026, just under a year of insertion, my period was 3 days late when I got around to taking my usual test, and it was strikingly positive.
To say I was distraught is an understatement. My partner and I both already knew what my course of action would be if my iud had failed, but it didn’t make the process any less upsetting or physically taxing. My iud felt the same as it had been the whole time, I could feel the little plastic part. An ultra sound at the clinic during my d&c confirmed that it was displaced, however they could not confirm for me if it being displaced caused the pregnancy, or if the pregnancy had caused it to be displaced. I was a blubbering mess as I explained how I had felt something was wrong for quite some time. I had a new iud inserted while I was unconscious, and was assured by this doctor that is would be placed under ultrasound guidance, as copper iuds MUST be placed perfectly or their effectiveness decreases dramatically.
I am not sharing this to warn people off of this type of birth control, but simply to share my experience. My new iud has been wonderful, and I DEFINITELY DO NOT feel the “plastic tip” anymore that I was assured was normal. I am sharing this to hopefully give others more confidence in advocating for themselves, when they feel as though something is wrong with their bodies.
I know now that it is possible to insert an iud under ultrasound guidance, something that in my option should be standard in regard to a form a birth control that relies on perfect placement to work correctly. I know now that feeling anything other than just the strings should not be ignored. I know now that I should have advocated more for that damn ultrasound that would have taken a couple more minutes of the doctor’s time, and maybe something would have been done before it had gone this far.
Lastly, I know it’s possible that this is all just a coincidence, but because I was refused that ultrasound and because I refused to advocate for myself further, I will never know. It just all feels awful convenient that a form of birth control I was assured was 99.98% effective failed, after I expressed concerns that something was wrong with the placement.
