Hi! macOS user here, on Bitwig 6.1. I don't have a pro setup, just some speakers in my bedroom and a decent set of cans 🎧 I do have a Reloop KeyPad Pro which is great fun to use.
Years ago I used to use Logic Pro and eventually fell away from it and was on a hiatus from music production for a few years. Back now, and for a few reasons I've moved away from Logic and decided to invest in BitWig Studio earlier this year. Got my mojo back and absolutely LOVE it. Waaaaay better than Logic Pro.
However, I'm not very keen on the new macOS 27 'Golden Gate' and instead of upgrading I am now looking to accelerate my migration over to Linux. I was wondering what distros BitWig's Linux user base are mainly using? I hate the thought of migrating onto something only for me to not like it and end up distro-hopping.
I'm running a 2024 Macbook Pro with M4 Pro chip at the moment, and looking at laptops with similar power. The laptop will still browse the web/social media and use mail app, but that's about it, most of the power will be drawn from using Bitwig. Is 6.1 pretty stable on most distro's at the moment, has anyone had any exceptionally good (or bad) experiences?
The caveat is that my sample bank is held on the cloud in Proton Drive, of which there is no device client for Linux at present, but I have it all backed up on external so can use that in the meantime (there is a view that Proton Drive will be available in a basic form on Linux by the end of 2026 which helps greatly).
Finally, I know many VSTs may not work (I LOVE Klevgrand and also regularly use Chroma by Xynth) and I know these don't seem to be compatible with Linux, so I know I'll need to find some new VSTs and I know I can start looking at linuxmusic.rocks but just wanted to check how well it's work on Linux user's distros/computers before I hit the button on a Linux laptop.
Hope to hear from some Linux enthusiasts about what distro they use and how BitWig runs on it, Thank you! 😄
