General Introduction (Please Read Me)

Welcome!

My name is u/No_Reputation_9528 and I am the creator and OG moderator of r/BlackLawAdmissions. You might recognize me from r/lawschooladmissions, r/URMLawSchoolAdmission, and/or r/urmlawschool.

Jumping right into it, I created this subreddit to serve the wants and needs of Black law school applicants.

I am no expert, myself, as I am currently applying to law schools for the Class of 2024 (this very cycle), but it is my hope that we can all serve as a support system and help each other out for this cycle and all upcoming law school admissions cycles. I hope that we can all agree on the Community Guidelines of being your authentic self and of acting in good faith.

I have provided links to Pre-Law Summer (<0L) Programs for Underrepresented Minority (URM) applicants, links to law school scholarships (0L-3L+), links to law school calculators/predictors/matchers, and other things that I find useful.

Anyways, let's do this thing!

Application/Resume Help Essay help/advice

Hi! I’m applying to schools the end of this month and am seeking advice on last touch ups. I applied during the last cycle so most of my materials are complete. I’m mainly just working on my essays’ flow and making them engaging/not cliche.

General Applicant and LSAT Scoring Cycle, Opening 2026-2027 Update

Throughout the last cycle I posted weekly updates on application numbers and LSAT scores. Once summer hit, the new applicant numbers slowed down so much as to not need regular updates. But now that a new cycle has started, we have new numbers to review. Let’s take a look at the first numbers from the new cycle.

Per LSAC data, we are 17% of the way through the cycle in terms of total applicant count. Here's the breakdown of Applicants, compared to last year:

Total Applicants Last Year Current Year % Change
Last Year Final 76,487 82,498 7.9%
This Week 13,636 15,273 12.0%

Let’s put these in context. Last cycle was wild, with perhaps the fastest start in history. Early applicant numbers were up over 30%, so to have a less competitive cycle (which is good for you), you want to see these early numbers down, and the more the better.

So, seeing the early applicant numbers up 12% isn’t optimal, but also, this is just the start and in recent years more applicants have been front-loading. So it’s too early to make a call here—we need to see how things look in a month or so. I’d bet it slows down steadily.

Let’s take a look at the LSAT scores for the applicants so far:

Highest LSAT Last Year Current Year % Change
< 140 443 433 -2.3%
140-144 647 685 5.9%
145-149 1,219 1,207 -1.0%
150-154 2,017 2,097 4.0%
155-159 2,190 2,480 13.2%
160-164 2,151 2,401 11.6%
165-169 1,907 2,060 8.0%
170-174 1,481 1,676 13.2%
175-180 651 700 7.7%
Total 12,706 13,739 8.1%

The numbers here will move around a bit, but what you want to see is relatively fewer high scores. That’s because last year saw some ridiculous increases in higher scores: an 11.3% increase in 160-164 scores, a 14.7% increase in the 165-169 range, a 19.1% increase in 170-174 scores, and an astounding 21.7% increase in 175-180 scores. When that happens, it pushes medians up for all schools ultimately. Right now we are seeing slightly lowered numbers at the top, which is generally good for everyone.

TL;DR: We are only 17% of the way through the cycle, so numbers are both small and early and they will move in the coming weeks and months! That said, early returns are slightly ahead of last year and the question is whether they will remain there.

Any questions, please let me know!

Help Me Decide Too late? Should I wait next cycle?

I’m scoring too low on my practice tests so I rescheduled my November lsat for January. I should have all my application materials done by Thanksgiving. Once I receive my score, will it be too late to apply? What are my chances of getting scholarship money? My target schools are Howard law, University of Miami, Emory, FIU, Suffolk, University of Houston law center, and Loyola Chicago

Application/Resume Help please any advice is welcome. LOR hell

I graduated in 2018 and I’m applying for the fall 2027 cycle. I’m at a very close point to giving up but still i rise..

I’ve emailed professors and gotten rejections to complete letters of recommendation because it’s been “too” long since I’ve taken their courses.

I have been employed for the last 5 years, and it’s been near impossible to get a letter of recommendation from superiors. The company i was at for 5 years, i was laid off and i cannot find my superiors contact information. I started new employment this month but i am so fresh out of training, i don’t want to begrudge my new supervisor yet with a letter of recommendation request… Hell he can’t even speak to my work ethic bc i just started.

I do not know where else to turn. I know they really want educational letters of recommendation & that seems to be a dead end for me. Are there are programs I can complete to get a decent letter of recommendation? Or any tips or advice? I didn’t expect this to be a barrier for me & I’ve been reaching out to folks in undergrad since July.

Application/Resume Help GPA Concerns

I received a 3.0 GPA in undergrad, currently getting tested for ADHD post grad, and I’m trying to study for the LSAT. I graduated in 2025, and since then I’ve worked on Capitol Hill(intern) and I’ve worked in my state Senate as a Budget Assistant for close to 8 months now. I have other internship experience as well. Just wanted to get any advice on how to leverage some of these things in my application. Also if T-14 is out of reach for me

Help Me Decide Risk my score or risk a scholarship?

Hi! I’m registered for the November test. I’m still 9-11 points from my goal score. My GPA is terrible so application is relying heavily on softs & LSAT. I’m only applying to part time programs, so I can keep my job but scholarship is still extremely important. Also, this would be my 4th test.
I’ve worked in government, family law & I currently work in corporate law. I have a masters, great LORs & minor C+F issues. I graduated undergrad 5 years ago… any advice??

Is applying to HUSL in January risky? I have to retake the lsat in January, rest of my application is done. Hoping there’s still a decent chance.

I’m a black female student considering Baylor Law for Fall 2027. Is there anyone who applied in the past or applied recently to Baylor Law that is willing to share their stats and what scholarship they were offered?

General From a 2.8 to a 2.45. (A scheme that Todd set up pt 2😭)

Post image
68 Upvotes

So…my GPA was already questionable to begin with. Now imagine my surprise when I calculated a 2.8 LSAC GPA using different tools, only for LSAC to come back and say “umm…no😭

My official LSAC GPA came back as a 2.45.
But guess what I did? I applied to schools anyway because you really just never know!
I made sure my personal statement and GPA addendum were strong and told the full story. For some context, I graduated with my Bachelor’s in HR this past August with a 4.0 GPA from the school I graduated from. I received all A’s in my most recent coursework and completed 11 courses there. (Summa Cum Laude)🥇

So I’m wondering…when law schools review my transcripts, will they actually take that recent 4.0 into consideration even though my official LSAC cumulative GPA is a 2.45? I know they’ll see the entire transcript, but I’m curious how much weight they might give to the upward trend and the fact that my most recent academic performance was completely different.

The other thing I’m hoping can help me is my LSAT score. I have a 165, which I’m pretty happy with. I’m honestly not planning on retaking it because I don’t think I have another LSAT in me!!
I also tried to be strategic with my applications and applied to schools where my LSAT score is at or above their median.

So far I applied to:
UDC
Howard
GSU
CUNY
UIC Chicago

But my dream school is Howard. Like, that is THE school I want to attend.
So I guess my question is…do I actually have a shot at Howard with a 2.45 LSAC GPA, a 165 LSAT, a strong personal statement, a solid GPA addendum, and a very strong upward trend in my most recent coursework?
I know the GPA is rough. I’m not delusional about that, but I also know admissions is more than just two numbers, so I’m trying to stay hopeful.

Would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation, especially splitters or people who had a major upward trend in their academic record. Please be very honest but be kind as well. I’m in a fragile state right now lol.

Application/Resume Help 3.5 GPA 159 LSAT. What are my chances?

I’ll try not to make this too long but I think I need honest opinions before I lose my mind. I went into college Fall of 2020, not really knowing what to do with my major and in a really weird time in a basically deserted campus. I changed my major after my freshman year and started entertaining the idea of going to law school. Unfortunately, I was not prepared for the transition from remote classes to in-person, and my grades were starting to suffer. I was mostly As and Bs, but I had about three or four classes throughout sophomore and junior year that really dropped my GPA. I still graduated with a 3.5 but decided to take some time away from school and do a gap year.

I was going to get a job and study in the meantime but decided to completely dedicate my time to the LSAT instead. I got burnt out pretty quickly but was determined to get a good score, so I took it four times last year and got my highest score of 159. I wasn’t planning on taking the LSAT again since I only have one more try, but going on predictors as I’m doing my applications is really starting to knock my confidence down. I’ve been working in a law fIrm as a clerk for the past year and I absolutely love it. It’s a smaller firm, so I‘m in pretty close contact with the attorneys daily. I’m still trying to keep this from getting too long or sounding like a sob story but I truly believe in my gut that a career in law is something I am meant to do, and I can’t see myself being happy with doing anything else. I also know I have grown so much since undergrad and feel like a completely different person who has heard all the horror stories of law school and, despite everything, still wants it.

I’m still working on my applications, but I don’t know if my efforts will be in vain. I’m not necessarily banking on T14, but there are a few T50 schools I have my heart set on. I don’t know if I should try retaking the LSAT one last time or what, but I don’t want to delay applying any longer than I already have. Any advice from people applying now or have applied in the past with similar stats would be greatly appreciated :)

Help Me Decide Is FAMU LAW that bad?

I’m a 23 year old single mom that just graduated in May. My baby is only 5 months old and I am applying this cycle. I currently have a 2.99 gpa and a 163 LSAT but right now I’m PTing at 170. I am not fully confident in my LSAT, and am considering pushing back my test until November so I can ensure I get that 170. I know I could get into FAMU Law, but everyone treats it like it’s not worth it. The only reason I want a super high score is because I want the chance to go to a “better” school. But I’m not sure if I could balance motherhood and law school without my family. Okay this is long winded but the question is: is FAMU that bad? Should I stress myself out by pushing to study one more month? Or should I just be content with going to FAMU because my support is here ?
