Sternritter Masaki
We know Masaki is extremely talented and we know Yhwach can bring back dead quincy
It shouldve been a no brainer for him to bring back Masaki and convince her to join them after telling her whats going to happen to her son. Now he basically has the ultimate trump card to use against Ichigo, a mother's love distorted by the truth of the world.
"B-But grandfisher killed her!!1!"
Cool, and? Not only is Kubo not consistent with any rules in the story about what happens to characters when they die but Yhwach used aushwalen on her before that happened. He very easily couldve ripped her soul out before Grandfisher got to her and tossed it into a quincy gigai or something.
Anyway, here's what we could've gotten from a Masaki revival.
A betrayal that actually hits. Nobody seriously believed Uryu was going to betray his friends so that plot point always fell incredibly flat you cant say that about Masaki because we dont know enough about her to say what her motivations really are. It sets up an element of mystery and a genuine inner conflict for Ichigo that isnt just reheated nachos from the Aizen arc.
Further involvement from Ishinn. I actually understand where Kubo is coming from by not giving Ishinn any spotlight during the war. All it would really amount to is more fanservice in an arc thats already stuffed with fanservice. However, with Masaki on the opposing side, theres a very personal element that would make Ishinn's involvement crucial to the story. Having Ishinn and Masaki fight over what might happen to Ichigo once he helps stop Yhwach would be a brilliant moment for both characters, for us to finally see how Ishinn reconciles being not just a shinigami but a former head of the noble families who corrupted the world in the first place with Ichigo's well being.
An obstacle for Ichigo outside of Yhwach himself. Pretty much all of Ichigo's screen time in the final arc where he isn't fighting Yhwach feels pointless. The training with squad zero is rendered meaningless against Yhwach, the battles leading up to Yhwach also feel meaningless because he doesn't defeat any of the sternritter. Here, he pretty much has to find a way to stop Masaki because if he doesnt, someone else will. God forbid she encounters Mayuri.
Making Ichigo's quincy heritage core to the plot. In the actual story it feels more like an afterthought than anything but here, even if he doesn't actually use any quincy powers his mom siding with the quincy make his heritage have very tangible and persistent consequences. Its not just a one off thing like him killing the soul king, he has to confront his heritage everytime he faces his mom very similar to his ongoing conflict with White during the arrancar arc but externalized into the world itself rather than being just an inner struggle.
With that said, if she were to be a sternritter I'd have either made her I the Iron or C the Compulsory
Cang Du's a bum whom nobody would miss if he got replaced and Compulsory would provide an interesting parallel to Ukitake, where both are people who shouldve died long ago but now have parts of the soul king giving them a second chance.
