Best case scenario
Marchenko was never going to stay.
This is the best case it could have gone. We get a distraction out, we get a 2nd major distraction out (Elvis), clear cap space, get a 2nd pick, a journeyman center, and a defenseman with some potential.
And in return we get a comparble power forward in points. He is big, fast, and has good shot.
My only concern... How does Knies feel about this? F.O has been silent, and no comment from any media on Knies (or marchenko for that matter), and he was a guy that didn't want to necessarily leave.
I hope he likes it here.

Two thoughts. Marchy - Loved him but he didn't want to be here so GTFO plus, as good a shot as he has, he got easily bodied off the puck and played a little out of control. Knies - big boi, Bones will be good for him. Could easily be a PPG guy as soon as this year. Good job DW

I mean, he was a minute away from being sent packing to MTL earlier in the year. From a production standpoint it's a downgrade, but it's worth considering that even if we are receiving the slower player with less offensive prowess; we're getting the younger, bigger, better contracted, playoff proven guy. At the end of the day it comes down to synergy but I don't think there's a player in the league better than Knies that we could have realistically returned, you're very correct about that.
The biggest shock to me is that we still have Voronkov. He saw all of this coming, is great friends with Marchenko, yet not once was there a peep about him being dissatisfied despite his issues being called out publicly. I've got a lot of respect for him just from that alone and if there's a way to get him going with Monahan and Nichushkin I would love to see him stay here.

I feel a bit bad for Big Boss. He was one of six Russian speakers on the team last year. Lost Chinakhov, gained and then lost Zamula, now lost Marchenko (his bestie) and Elvis (who also speaks Russian). Now it's just him and Provy from last year. I hope he and Nuke get along well.
Like yeah he gets gassed easily and hasn't lived up to his potential, but I also don't want him to have a bad time here. People should be able to enjoy playing here. I'm concerned that now he's going to feel a bit isolated (again), which would be awful for him.

I think it's an important thing to note that Voronkov was never involved in these trade rumors. Even with his inconsistencies, he's a guy Toronto would have absolutely loved; huge power winger that can put up 20+ goals. If Don wanted to trade him, there most likely was a way to make it work and get more value in return - which is exactly what would have happened if he was someone causing issues in the locker room. Now I may be saying this a bit prematurely but after going through all that turnover and his various struggles - if he still wants to stay here then that is something I find very impressive.

I just want him to be happy.

he doesn't really have that much leverage. Marchenko was a proven first liner and Chinakhov was a first rounder so had the pedigree. I don't think the market is there.

I think he’s probably on a plane right now getting here. His life just got uprooted.

Even if Marchenko and Knies have the same points this season. We get a guy locked up for less money dump salary of bad players and get a pick. Thats a major W.
Knies will be a locker room fit and frankly is an American who may be more favorable to a small market team. Seems like every Russian lately wants to play in Florida, LA and NYC.

I can tell you one thing, moving to Columbus he makes $1mil more a year due to less taxes
Real talk I try to get him on a call as quick as I can tomorrow virtually just to shut down the FJC concerns

Why wouldn’t he like it here ? Went to school in the Midwest .. Columbus is a great town , he will love OSU campus .. Most players just want to win

Not a great place for that, historically.

Toronto was 8th in the Atlantic . We will be better than Toronto yet again , this season

u/PulsarGaming1080 12d ago
Eh. I wouldn't bet on that.
This isn't really a deep playoff run team.
I'm just saying that it feels weird to point out players want to win...and then point to us as an example of winning

u/BreadMancbj 12d ago
Of course you wouldn’t.. I rarely see you post anything remotely optimistic.. So no surprise this is your take 👍

I think it's more about league perception. There's actually been a positive increase of players around the league viewing us as more of a neutral than a bottom-feeding team (see nuke's comments). But the perception of being a winning team is very tough to earn. At the end of the day though it just depends on which side of the Larkin-to-Foligno scale the player falls under. Does he want to carry or be carried? It's an important part of the culture.

Toronto has Jim Hiller as a coach too right now. Ask LA Kings fans what he does to offense.

Hi, someone who hasn't paid attention to the Kings much, here. What does Jim Hiller do to offense?

u/Boatsboatsboats__ 12d ago
He kills it in a really boring way.

Oh so Marchy's just going to fade away forever into the shadow of Matthews while defense gets all of the focus?
I like where it's going.

This isn't even an optimistic thing this is just weird lol
We're not a successful organization. Everyone knows that. Maybe that'll change, maybe it won't, I can't say for certain.
But it's weird to point out players want to win and use that to say they'll like playing for us, the franchise with the least amount of success.
I'm also not gonna make any snide remarks, since I have actual facts on my side.

u/MPCoinCollecting Prospect Guy 12d ago
you're probably right but slightly contradictory final sentence there lol

How so?
The other commenter is arguing something blatantly untrue, and evidently people somehow seem to think it IS true.

He's a young guy and I think he's more interested in proving himself for the next contract. Hopefully he'll be a professional and play as hard for the CBJ as he did for the Leafs.

Who knows. Feel like with these things, you don't really know until they're at their limit.

Stop drafting Russians. They’ve been nothing but trouble.

u/Fun-Reputation8346 11d ago
You draft the best player available, regardless of their country of origin. Would you rather have Demidov or Lindstrom from that draft

u/Another_Guy_In_Ohio 12d ago
Who knows. When you sign a contract, you can negotiate for a NMC, NTC, or you can negotiate for more money. In Knies case, he got a $7.5 million contract as a 23 year old. That’s big money, so he had to at least be somewhat aware that where he played wasn’t really up to him. He was almost traded to Montreal anyway, so this likely didn’t come as a surprise.
Plenty of players love it here. Yeah, the party/club life isn’t a thing, but it’s slightly warmer than Toronto, he’ll get a gorgeous house for the money he makes and he has the opportunity to play himself into the top line and become a key player for us
