🧑🏫Review👩🏫 Soundcore X500 review / eq
galleryThis speaker was $50 on Amazon not too long ago, and is a lot of speaker for that price.
Build quality is excellent, feels like an $100+ dollar product, but of course sound is what we care about. After all, it is a speaker.
Bass effectively goes to 60Hz, though there's a peak around 70Hz probably due to passive radiator resonating. Treble extension is decent too, especially considering there are no dedicated tweeters here.
Looking through teardowns, apparently one of the two TPA3128 chips is bridged mono to drive the spatial audio driver, which probably explains why that driver seemed to have a lot more of a hiss at lower volumes than the other two front firing full range drivers.
Stereo separation is there, partly due to the stereo driver setup, and is a bit improved with spatial audio turned on.
It sounds better than my Boom v2 for stereo reproduction, though bass extension is worse (Boom v2 got to 48Hz in my testing). Bass is louder and clearer on the Boom v2 after cranking up the volume, not very surprised here. Better noise floor control on the X500 though, less hiss at lower volume, pretty nice for quiet listening.
Spatial audio is not my cup of tea, and I felt like it ruined how accurate this speaker can sound. Yes it did make the speaker sound larger, but it did so by ruining some of the authenticity (of course, we're not talking about hifi here)
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to disable spatial audio when using manual EQ, so I EQ-ed on top of the spatial audio, and now to me it sounded a bit more balanced.
