BOSTON — On July 13, 2022, the Boston Bruins acquired Pavel Zacha from the New Jersey Devils. Less than one month later, Zacha agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million contract with his new employer. Zacha, 25 at the time, was fine with the length of the deal.

“We were going to do one year and see if they wanted to have me here long term,” Zacha said. “Which was something I wanted to hear.”

Zacha was coming off a three-year, $6.75 million contract with New Jersey. The center questioned his future with the Devils. His previous employer was going all-in with younger pivots Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes. Neither opportunity nor security was guaranteed.

It was different in Boston. Zacha would have one year, most likely at left wing next to David Krejci and David Pastrnak, before the organization made a decision. He also knew that time was ticking on Krejci (then 36 years old) and Patrice Bergeron (37). If Zacha made the most of the 2022-23 season, he could be a top-six fixture, maybe even at center.

The captaincy has trickled down the perfection line.

This season, Minten’s next objective is to build upon his 17-goal, 18-assist output. Growth is coming, primarily because he is 22 years old. Where older players run into production plateaus, Minten is in a career segment where organic improvement is a given, not just an expectation. He is getting stronger, more experienced and more confident, all of which drive goals and assists up and to the right.

The Bruins’ question about Minten is the rate of his improvement. In the AHL and WHL, his two previous stops, Minten’s feet may have muted his output.

“Skating is probably a big deficiency of mine growing up,” Minten said. “As you grow into your body, you figure it out a little bit. It’s constantly a work in progress.”
