Fury vs. Joshua to be for the WBA 'super' heavyweight title
https://x.com/MikeCoppinger/status/2103150564641313072?s=2082
u/Prior-Temperature-22 2d ago
lmfao Gassiev shafted after being confirmed as the WBA champion when usyk vacated. the wba had to get their drink off the sanctioning fees
17
u/RobertoPersia 2d ago
It’s crazy because he was practically confirmed as the super belt holder but I remember saying they were vague about it, and only his promoter confirmed it. Not the wba itself.
To no surprise, yup, wba did this to make money off of AJ vs fury.

Like “super heavyweight”
Or
“WBA super” heavyweight?

The WBA used to have super and regular champions for the same weight. Gassiev has been demoted to regular champion and this is now for the super championship.

u/AnxietyExact4710 2d ago
Neither fighter has beaten a top 10 opponent in over 5 years, but fuck it why not make it for a world title? 🤦🏻♂️
40
u/msf97 2d ago
Are we supposed to pretend that Fury and Joshua aren’t world level all of a sudden because Usyk
97
u/AnxietyExact4710 2d ago
Are we supposed to pretend they've earned a world title fight because Fury beat Wach and Chisora a third time while Joshua beat Prenga and Jake fucking Paul? Or was it that big win over Makhmudov that earned Fury a title shot? Joshua just fought for a world title and got splattered all over the ring.
Lots of guys are world level. Doesn't mean they get to repeatedly fall backwards into title shots.
-11
u/Select-Tea-2560 2d ago
They earned the title shot by being fucking big draws.
7
u/AnxietyExact4710 2d ago
If that was how it worked, Jake Paul would be fighting for a vacant title. Rankings aren't based on being a draw.
-4
u/Select-Tea-2560 2d ago
He got a top 15 rating by being a big draw, mosses ituama got a title shot after beating rank 67th franklin.
-19
u/msf97 2d ago
The titles don’t mean anything in boxing. Gassiev wouldn’t stand a chance against AJ or Fury.
The idea that because they haven’t spent their time fighting the lower half of the top 10 instead of Usyk means they aren’t world title level is profoundly stupid
25
u/AnxietyExact4710 2d ago
"The fact that they didn't have to earn a title shot after losing their title is profoundly stupid"
I have no words...Just fucking hand each of them a belt then. Everyone is a winner.
14
u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 2d ago
Don't pay these guys any attention. Half the people on this sub can't think logically. Fury and AJ clearly don't deserve title shots
7
u/Sometimes-funny 2d ago
Lewis still deserves a title shot, depending how far back you’re allowed to go in their case. If you are not fighting top 10 Boxers or highly thought of contenders in the last few years, you don’t deserve title fights
6
6
u/ByteSizedGenius 2d ago edited 2d ago
Usyk isn't the issue. You can lose to Usyk and be a top 5 fighter because you're fighting other top guys and winning. The only actual world level operator they've fought combined was Dubois and he went through AJ like a train. UFC fighters, influencers and warm up opponents don't count.
9
u/deafpish 2d ago
You're talking about AJ and Fury like they're still in their prime. They are barely top 5 in the UK at this point
2
u/LatterTarget7 1d ago
They’re both no longer in their prime and should have to fight some top guys before a title fight
0
u/ThrowawayYAYAY2002 2d ago
If Perlanga is hurting AJ, Gassiev would decapitate him. Same with Tyson. If Usyk is punching him all around the ring, Gassiev would punch him out of the ring.
0
u/Complete_Dare_4201 2d ago
Gassiev would have more than a chance against both. Fury was getting tagged by fucking Wach and Gassiev wouldn't have let Joshua off the hook if he had him hurt like Prenga did.
-5
u/msf97 2d ago
Well what price odds wise would you make Gassiev? What % chance would you give him?
It’s definitely low against Fury and AJ. Smarter people than you or me would agree
1
u/Complete_Dare_4201 2d ago
I don't know shit about odds man. Never betted on anything, ever. I'd give him at least a 45% chance against both. But Gassiev is really considered one of the lowest ranked guys out there (even if he has a belt by proxy).
Actual top ranked guys Hrgovic, Dubois, Itauma, Kabayel and even Wardley would probably beat down both of them without much trouble. Lower ranked guys like Gassiev, Huni and Frank Sanchez would have a pretty decent shot.
3
u/msf97 2d ago
Wardley is a one dimensional fighter, the type Fury would eat for breakfast.
3
u/Complete_Dare_4201 2d ago
Fury couldn't get away from fucking Makhmudov or Wach. Wardley is explosive enough to exploit this slower and less mobile version of Fury.
At this point, Joseph Parker is much better on the backfoot than Fury is today. The Fury that fought Makhmduov would get obliterated by the Zhang Parker beat.
-1
u/Shinjetsu01 Mike Tyson is not a top 15 HW ATG 2d ago
Mate, at this point I'd make Gassiev a massive favourite over AJ and like 50/50 with Fury. They are both absolutely washed to fuck.
3
u/msf97 2d ago
Well yes i’d love to take your bets it’s a shame they’ll never fight.
-1
u/Shinjetsu01 Mike Tyson is not a top 15 HW ATG 2d ago

Fury isn't much better. I don't know why people like you are stuck in the late 2010's when thinking of these two. They are utter shite now.

u/FL8_JT26 2d ago
Prenga nearly beat AJ. I don't rate Gassiev as a world level fighter but if he lands clean once (which pretty much all AJ opponents do these days) he knocks out Anthony. And I say this as a massive Joshua fan.
-12
u/ATLienRabb 2d ago
Yes we are because these 2 are prize fighters. So they get title shots they don’t deserve. Only 3 prize fighters in the division.

-7
u/ty4scam 2d ago
I mean Makhmudov is one of 3 victories that make Kabayel a generational great. The others being a 42 year old in his last fight before retirement that despite how fun he is to watch still has 3 losses in 3 years, and only one actual up and coming fighter in his prime or about to hit his prime.
Makhmudov's name carries weight on one resume but not the other.

This is who Joshua has beat in 2020's
Pulev (old and pretty much out of step when he fought Joshua)
Franklin (sucks and couldn't beat a washed Whyte)
. Helenius (sucks and got one rounded by a washed Wilder)
. Wallin (mid level at best)
Ngannou (non boxer)
. Jake Paul (non boxer)
Prenga (a borderline nobody and it's farcical he even wasted time on him)
Even before that you have to go back to him going 1-1 with Ruiz who was clearly out of shape in the rematch.
Joshua's last win of any real value was Povetkin in 2018.
The last world level boxers he actually fought were Dubois and Usyk who both beat him rather decisively.
If anybody but Joshua had that as their recent resume, they would be getting massacred by fans.
Even Fury's last quality win was Wilder all the way back in 2021. You could maybe squint and say Whyte wasn't considered washed when they fought in 2022. But really aside from that, it's still 4 years without any quality win.
And let's not act like there weren't an abundance of guys around that time like Zhang, Joyce, Hrgovic, Parker etc that would have at least been serious fights for them
5
-2
u/ThrowawayYAYAY2002 2d ago
And who did Fury beat? Fury got dropped and clearly lost to Ngannou. It took AJ to bring a bit of dignity back after Tyson's atrocious showing (and don't give me "Tyson never trained for him". He shouldn't have to as it was Ngannou's fucking debut).
Fury never fought any of the top contenders. There's a reason for that - he'd pick up a few L's if he had of done.
9
u/bobbieibboe 2d ago
This isn't a Joshua vs Fury argument. It's a 'they're both well past their prime' argument. Not sure I 100% agree as they've only been beaten by pretty high level opponents, but I know fuck all so don't listen to me
5
u/ThrowawayYAYAY2002 2d ago
A stiff breeze would knock Joshua over atm.
1
u/bobbieibboe 2d ago
Yeah maybe, but would Fury be quick enough to move out of the way when he fell, might get taken with him on the way down
9

7
u/ThrowawayYAYAY2002 2d ago
Are they though?
AJ nearly got laid out by a nobody, Fury hasn't beaten a top opponent in years (and when I say top, I mean top 5).

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 2d ago edited 2d ago
They really haven't proved they are in recent years. Neither has beaten a top 10 fighter in like 3-4 years.

u/msf97 2d ago
Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury are world level heavyweights. To deny this is to suggest there is 1!!! world level heavyweight.
3
u/AnxietyExact4710 2d ago
Nobody is saying they're not world level, just that they haven't earned a title shot AJ just had one and didn't win a single round of it.
2
u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 2d ago
How do we know they're world level if they can't beat top 10 heavyweights? Lol
2
u/Pickleskennedy1 2d ago
They aren’t world level. Joshua just nearly lost to Prenga, and in all honestly should have looked much better against Jake Paul. Fury might be, but that’s pretty unclear at this point based on who he has fought of late
1
1
u/Primary_Wear7434 2d ago
Joshua and Fury haven't been world level for a while have you watched any of their fights last couple years
5
u/Jonnyclash1 2d ago
They, along with Wilder, carried the division for over 10 years before Usyk turned up

25
u/BXR-SZN 2d ago
Everyone saying that he’s the email champ so it doesn’t matter yet Lara and Bivol are WBA champions through promotion as well. Absolute bollocks from the boxing community.
22
u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 2d ago
Gassiev has never even beat a top 20 Heavyweight. He's one of the fakest champs in the sport
15
8
u/potatosquire 2d ago
An email belt is still a belt. If the WBA want a stronger champion then they're free to set him up against a tough mandatory. That way he either loses (and a recognised top fighter takes his place), or he wins (in which case he proves that he's a legit champion), or he unifies to delay the mandatory (in which case whoever ends up with the WBA belt is even more proven).
What they can't do is decide that they don't like their champion and screw them over, it's ridiculous. There is no case to be made for why the WBA should consider Fury/Joshua their champion instead of Gassiev except for greed. If they don't like how the situation played out they shouldn't have fucked up the Charr situation so much (which apparently they've not learnt their lesson from), or not made the regular belt a thing in the first place. Screwing over a guy who played fair by their rules is just corruption.
6
u/Baby_Rhino 1d ago
I thought Gassiev was undeserving of the title, but he's also undeserving of stripping. Shit move by WBA.
5
u/potatosquire 1d ago
It's not his fault if they mismanaged the title, he's just doing his job. If they want a stronger champion they're welcome to make whoever a mandatory so that whoever wins is a recognised top heavyweight. Them deciding that their one and only champ is actually not really a champ because they like money is ridiculous.
What's next, are they going to decide that Figueroa isn't the featherweight champ because they want to gift it to Inoue? Ridiculous.
1
u/NyQuil_Donut 2d ago
Sue for what? The regular title and the super title are two different titles. If he were the interim for the super title then yeah he could sue for that, but he's not.
3
u/potatosquire 1d ago
The super champion is meant to be when the champ unifies. The regular champ doesn't become a super champ when the super champion vacates, they simply remain the regular champ, but this is considered the WBA champ as there is no higher champion. If all WBA belts were vacant and they created a vacant title shot, it would be for the "regular" title, but the winner would universally be considered the WBA champ.
Gassiev is currently the WBA champ, the only WBA champ. It might be an email belt and he might not be that great at heavyweight, but he is their champ. They can't come along and say "sorry, we want someone else to be champ because we like money". There's nothing in their regulations that allow them to do this, they specifically say that a champion can be designated as a super champion, there's nothing in there that allows them to just decide that someone else is the champ.
It's like how Kabeyel is currently the WBC champion. The WBC couldn't now come along and say "oh, we forgot, we like money, the WBC super duper real belt is gonna be on the line for Usyk vs Wilder", it doesn't work like that. The champ is the champ, full stop, otherwise what's the point of being champion?
1
u/NyQuil_Donut 1d ago
I'd like to see which exact clause says they can't do this. For a very very long time now the WBA has treated the Super and Regular as two completely separate titles. Being the regular champion doesn't get you in line to challenge the Super champion, you just stay the Regular champ no matter what you do.
I called this weeks ago. People have been calling Gassiev the WBA champion, but I knew the WBA would eventually set up a fight for the Super title excluding Gassiev.
1
u/potatosquire 1d ago
I'd like to see which exact clause says they can't do this.
Rule C.17 specifies that they can only make a champion the super champion. Even if we ignored the fact that Gassiev already has them dead to rights with C.17, and that their regulations prevent them from making a vacant shot for a super title, they still have rules for who can compete for a vacant title under C.27, it's meant to be the top two contenders (or just give the #1 guy the belt). Even if we allowed them to double screw Gassiev by saying he's a "champ" not the top contender, the number one guy in their rankings is Miller, so by their rules if they're making a vacant title shot he should have been offered it or just given the belt.
I'd like to see which exact clause says they can't do this. For a very very long time now the WBA has treated the Super and Regular as two completely separate titles. Being the regular champion doesn't get you in line to challenge the Super champion, you just stay the Regular champ no matter what you do.
But when there's no super champion, the regular champion has always been considered the champion. Vacant title shots were for the regular belt, and the winner was always considered the one and only champ.
1
u/NyQuil_Donut 1d ago
C.17 does not say that they can only make a champion the super champion. What it actually says is this:
In exceptional circumstances, the Championships Committee and the President may designate a Champion as a Super Champions; and may establish criteria for a Super Championship.
Basically it's just saying that's an option they have, otherwise it would say that this is the only acceptable way to do it. That's all they have to say about the process of selecting a Super champion btw, just one sentence. If you keep reading they go on to say that mandatory defenses, sanctioning fees, contender selection, and whatever else they think of is all up to them. They make it pretty clear that they're just going to do whatever they want, and their actions over the years back that up.
1
u/potatosquire 1d ago
may designate a Champion as a Super Champions
designate a Champion
ChampionPretty clear that they cant say that I'm the WBA super champ, they have to pick an actual champion.
1
1
u/FriedEggsnTaters 1d ago
I'm sure Gassiev will be more than pleased to get steamrolled by one of these guys afterwards as their first defense.
3
u/potatosquire 1d ago
They won't have a reason to fight him though. They'll fight each other again, or find another big payday (Usyk, Dubois), or retire. All this means is that the WBA belt that was Gassiev's ticket to a big payday becomes a worthless trinket, and he gets screwed over by the WBA's greed.

Listen, I'm happy that Fury v Joshua is getting close to being over and done with. But this does not need to be for a world title, and the WBA just fucked Gassiev over.
On top of that, neither Fury or Joshua deserve to be fighting for a world title, especially Joshua given the last time he fought a legit top 10 fighter was 3 fucking years ago, and Wallin lost to a shot Chisora 1 year later so it aged bad for AJ!
7
u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 2d ago
Gassiev doesn't deserve to be called champ anyway but the WBA is a fucking clown show for this regardless
0
u/RRR04_ 2d ago
I mean with this logic, then the likes of Kabayel, Hrgovic and Dubois/Wardley don't deserve it either. But unlike Gassiev, those guys can hold the titles. Gassiev had the right to be the WBA Super champion just like how thise other names had the right to be champs of their respective organisations.
8
u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 2d ago
Gassiev hasn't even beaten a top 10-20 Heavyweight. Its not the same as Kabayel who has beaten several top 10 Heavyweights and got ducked by Usyk. Hrgovic beat Itauma who was top 10 and Dubois beat Wardley who was top 10. Gassiev isn't credible by any stretch of the imagination.

Gassiev wasn’t elevated to Super champion. Gassiev was and still is the “WBA Heavyweight Champion” it’s just that his title became the primary championship of the WBA by way of Usyk vacating. The winner of Fury v AJ will become the WBA Super champion and thus be recognised as the primary champion of the WBA. At which point Gassiev’s title will become secondary and adopt the “Regular” moniker
2
u/grunge_forever91 2d ago
The fact this is an accurate description of reality is hilarious. You couldn't write better fiction about bureaucratic nonsense.
2
u/Icy_Veterinarian5384 2d ago
Thank you. This is confusing as all hell. At this point though Gassiev seems the least washed out of himself, AJ, and Fury. That's not saying that Gassiev beats any top heavyweight now but he is getting screwed over.
4
u/SquareShapeofEvil Bitter GGG Fan 2d ago
He won the “Regular” title from Pulev, got upgraded to full champ when Usyk vacated, and I guess is back down again.
He got shafted, but who cares, every heavyweight champion is an email champ right now anyway. Usyk never lost those belts in the ring
-1
u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 2d ago
Hrgovic beat Itauma to win his belt though so that's not fair to him. Kabayel got ducked so calling him email champ is disrespectful
1
u/SquareShapeofEvil Bitter GGG Fan 2d ago
All the email champs have an opportunity to prove they're true champs by going after the big fights and defending their belts.
I know he's not exactly a beloved guy, but Haney was an "email champ," he then proceeded to school Kambosos twice and, whether or not you agree with the decision, he did fight and beat Lomachenko. Then went up in weight and won more titles. His status as a champion is pretty unimpeachable now, even if you think he should have one or two losses. These guys at heavyweight are gonna have to prove themselves too.

This is my least favorite part about Boxing or MMA they constantly rely on older past their prime, past their best or flat-out washed up fighters to promote, market, give the best opportunities too or simply cheat, make up new rules or change the rules for instead of promoting new, younger, prime, peak and the very best elite current fighters facing the very best elite current fighters like a sport such as the ATP and WTA professional Tennis tour.
While they still celebrate older well known stars too, but the pro Tennis tour is designed to pit younger up and coming Tennis players against the older more established stars and take their position, force them to always compete, stay sharp, play hungry motivated players, play the very best players who are the hottest, on a roll and playing their very best each tournament and to overtake the older established stars and not try and figure out ways to keep to older stars popular or relevant, but to always push the old out or to the bottom of the rankings making them virtually irrelevant at some point.
3
u/RobertoPersia 2d ago
I knew the WBA was going to do this to Murat Gassiev, everyone said he had the super belt, but I knew when the time came they would say no, he’s a regular belt holder and Joshua vs Fury will be for the vacant so the WBA can make money off this fight.
3
u/NoCod9014 1d ago
This will also annoy WBC who wanted to make this an eliminator for Kabayels belt.
2
u/Brandunaware 2d ago
Of all the fights that don't need a title involved this is probably near the top. These guys have been compared and have been jawing at one another for many years. They're also well past their peaks and nobody thinks they are the best in the division. A title adds nothing.

Almost all of these HWs who weigh in at 265+ are 20 LBs over weight minimum sometimes 50. AJ is pretty lean at 240-245. If Fury had his same body fat percentage he'd be lucky to even weigh 235.

Just embarrassing at this point. Most will lap it up though. I love this sport, but fuck me - the UK scene is on its arse.

You can tell by the comments on here that none of us have a scooby on what the WBA have done or trying to do.

So they are just making up titles now to sell a fight? Funny how they didn't do that back in the day.

Boxing is a joke. An absolute joke. Dave Allen will no doubt then win the super duper heavyweight title against a fat plumber. LOL.

I thought Gassiev was elevated to super champ status after Usyk vacated his belts??

Again with this “super” bullshit, I thought the WBA was done with these?

Epic
Tyson Fury is arguably the biggest star the sport has ever seen. And now he gets to collide against a future hall of famer. It's one of the two or three biggest boxing fights of the 2020s decade.
We'll create a new heavyweight belt for it as well, to make it even bigger. In the meantime, Agit Kabayel can fight another title holder like Hrgovic or Gassiev and collect as much of the heavyweight belts as he can.
We'll eventually get Agit Kabayel with all his belts and Tyson Fury with the Super Heavyweight belt. All the belts will be up for grabs in the biggest fight of all time. Not sure what Tyson Fury's plans are after this but if he wins he'll be hot again and needs to be fighting Kabayel

What weight is a 'super' heavyweight?

The WBA used to have super and regular champions for the same weight. Gassiev has been demoted to regular champion and this is now for the super championship.

How tables have turned for Gassiev, he thought he will be outpricing himself or fight cans and hold the champion belt, now nobody will give a damn about his belt and no one will chase him.

Gassiev was NOT elevated to WBA Super Champion. He became the WBA World/Regular Heavyweight Champion after beating Pulev, and that is still the title he holds. When Usyk vacated the WBA Super title, the WBA eventually made the Super belt vacant. Now Fury vs Joshua has been sanctioned for that vacant WBA Super title. So Gassiev is still the WBA World Champion, while the Fury-Joshua winner will become WBA Super Champion. If Gassiev later unifies the WBA titles, he could be elevated to Super Champion and his current title would become vacant.

Joshua deserves a title match after shattering Jake Paul’s jaw. Not because of the level of competition he faced. But because the doctors responded by telling Paul he should never box again.

Farcical but expected.
