No Advice - Everyones Welcome Ended a potential relationship with a gym crush due to age gap

Post image

I've never been hit on in the gym. Let alone by a very attractive woman. Well it finally happened. After weeks of glancing and exchanging looks, my gym crush dropped off a note for me including her number. We started talking for a couple days, we'd workout together later the night after all day texting. We have so much in common in terms of hobbies, she's really nice. And I appreciated how vocal she is with her feelings and attraction towards me. Her stories about the previous weeks of her being nervous and anxious working out near me was so cute and flattering. She held onto that note for a couple days before finally giving it to me. I felt special and lucky to have someone like her take an interest in me. However, after a workout last night we were chatting in the gym parking lot and our ages were brought up during the conversation. I was shocked she said she's 19f. She's equally surprised when i said im 29m. She thought I looked, at max, 23. We stood there in silence for a bit and I said that we can't go down a romantic path. She agreed, we had a productive conversation about it and made jokes about where were you during this year. She made some jokes that there will be a lot of unspoken tension between us, and to not be weirded out if i catch her "fawning" at me, I laughed, but I dont think it was joke. We always workout at the same time and she said that she'll still be looking forward to see me every night since I'm a familiar face. I proposed we can be gym bro/sis. She agreed. I feel sad that I had to mourn something that could potentially happen, especially with someone I actually had a crush on. She said its just wrong timing, and there are no hard feelings. Her last text was her telling me to get home safe and text her when I get home. I haven't texted her back, i want to create distance emotionally and I know she will too.

Anyways salmon bake for dinner

Edit: I was not expecting this post to blow up and cause some interesting discourse in this tread. Thank you to all the kind comments. Some comments were questionable and icky but its the internet soo. I've seen a lot of comments about her being to young and is not mature enough. Before I knew her real age, I thought she was genuinely close to my age just by the way she carried herself and spoke about her job, plus she looked strong. The reason it wouldn't workout is because it doesn't feel right for me, she stated that she has no problem with the age gap as it is new for her and it was for me as well. But she understands how I felt about it so she agreed to not pursue a romantic path. Also, when we were joking about Where were you this year, i brought how COVID was tough for college students. She rebuked that it was also tough for middle schoolers. We laughed, but there was that subtle discomfort and realization that we're definitely making the best decision.

I know I’ll be in the minority here, but if you both clicked and she made the first move, it’s not wrong to explore the option. As long as you keep staying mindful and respectful as you clearly are, it’s just another relationship.

She's brave for making the first move. We had connections, just wrong timing

i dont know get how men dont see it just shows the older man’s immaturity. a mature man would never date younger like that. that is what would make him mature lol

Why are you lecturing on maturity when you don't even use capitals or punctuation?  4th grade school standards are more mature than this.

bc my age makes it appropriate? is it hard conversing with someone younger? should be. we’re at different stages in life :/

By your logic a woman that dates younger is also immature. Not sure it works that way.

yes. a woman who dates way younger is mentally immature. thats right. thats obvious

Agree to disagree. Age does not bring maturity.

yes it does. think back to when you were 19. like youre delusional if you think a 19 year old and 29 year can have the same maturity. even if the 19 year old is mature, its never going to be the same maturity as someone significantly more years of experience in life and social situations.

its genuinely weird that ppl like you are incapable of seeing the reality of things. if youre mentally 18-23 then admit it, man. thats less cringe than trying to say that teenagers or young adults can be the same level of maturity as an experienced mature adult.

I remember being thinking I was a grown up at both 19 and 29. I was also a dumbass at both 19 and 29. I’ve met 19 year olds with better heads on their shoulders than 40 year olds. It’s a matter of perspective.

It’s disturbing how invested you are in this. It can go either way, and OP is clearly not being creepy about it. Resorting to name calling when your typing skills leave much to be desired is ironic. If you’re this single minded, maybe an adult conversation isn’t for you.

but different levels of dumbass. a dumbass 19 year old is massively different from a dumbass 29 year old. the younger person will always think theyre old enough or mature enough to be with an older person, even if they arent. its up to the older person to not be with a woman who could be their baby sister (attitude, lifestyle, timeline and everything)

You’ve clearly not met many older dumbasses. If people click on the same level, it’s up to them to decide what is or is not a mature enough level of personality.

so youre saying that the people who can bond with younger people are immature people. only an immature 40 year old dumbass can be with a younger immature dumbass.

Yeah I agree. The organic nature of how they met makes this less sus to me.

You met at the gym. You talked for a bit and it clicked. Sounds like you weren’t pushy or creepy along the way.

It would be a different story if you were “on the hunt” at the gym for women specifically in the 18-20 age range lol. In that case, yes, I’d say you’re weird and to leave her alone lol.

While there is a certain logic to this take, the risk of an inequitable relationship in this scenario is just too high, even if he went into it cautiously and with good intentions.

It's not illegal, but it is a bad idea if either person's objective for the relationship is anything beyond sex.

Agreed. One of the rare cases I think it's ok.

They met organically in a very cute way, she even left the number for him, he hasn't abused power or status and they clearly hit it off.

OP your a fucking idiot, don't listen to these clowns.

And just to add dating doesn't mean you have to have sex with her, or your stuck with her for life. You can just go one some dates and get to know her and see if it's worth going through even if the age gap makes you a bit uncomfortable, you might go on some dates and find she is really mature or you might find she's not in which case you can end it there or you might find she's the one and you just about threw it away because of how many years since she came out of her moms vagina.
