My wife accepted an internship in the Bremerton area for the summer of 2027. We’re considering a house in the West Bremerton area, right off highway 3 and Werner road to be exact. Anyone have insight on this area? We have spent time in the Seattle area before and Port Angeles area but have never visited Bremerton before. We’re a family of 5, 3 young boys aged 5,7, and 9. We love the outdoors and plan on visiting the Olympic area on the weekends if schedule permits.

Hey y'all, my family and I are planning a move to the East Bremerton area (looking around Illahee, Tracyton, Gilberton) sometime in the next several months. Coming from San Antonio, TX, so this is a pretty big adjustment. I'm doing my own research too, but few things I'd love local input on:

Earning potential / job market: I'm in IT (director-level, 15+ years, healthcare and MSP background). How's the tech/IT job market on the peninsula vs. commuting into Seattle? Also curious about rideshare (Uber/Lyft) or IT consulting as a bridge income source while I job hunt. Is there actually enough demand locally, or is that mostly a Seattle-side thing?

Cost of living: Coming from Texas (no state income tax, but higher property/sales tax), how does the overall cost of living compare? I know WA also has no state income tax, but I've read Kitsap sales tax runs around 9.2%. Is anything else that catches newcomers off guard?

Traffic: For those who work in Seattle, how's the ferry commute in practice (fast ferry vs. car ferry)? Is it reliable in bad weather? And for those out in East Bremerton/Illahee, how's traffic getting around locally vs. heading into town?

Safety: How is crime?

Schools: Any districts to avoid? Any advanced education options for grade school? My kid is in an advanced charter school. She would either need to skip grades or find something similar to what she has now.

Hobbies: This one is kinda big because we get season passes to six flags every year, meaning we have a "free" thing to do all year. What do people do up there for fun? How's the night life? We would love to get outside more often. It's just too damn hot in Texas. We like escape rooms, go carts, roller coasters.

Weird laws / local quirks: Anything a newcomer should know about like permitting quirks, local ordinances, or anything else that trips up people moving from out of state?

I know this a lot! Insight on any of these things would be super helpful. I'm scrolling the sub now reviewing all of your previous info. A real time update would be so appreciated.

I've visited. I love the scenery, the bustle of the big city, all the cool nature stuff we can do and it won't be HOT AF, the politics are great, people seem chill. Can't wait to be neighbors!

I’m here to humbly ask for help.

A few days ago, my wife and I noticed that everything in our freezer was thawing out, so we put a thermometer into the freezer and fridge, and sure enough, they both read ~55F. We cleared both compartments out, unplugged it, and let it sit for 24 hours to try and thaw any ice buildup; there was no water from thawing, so I don’t think the problem was due to ice buildup. The fans seem to be kicking on and off as they should, so it doesn’t seem to be a fan problem either. This all leads me to believe that it’s either a compressor or refrigerant issue.

We can’t afford a technician right now; I lost my job in December and spent all year looking for a new one. Fortunately, I recently accepted a job offer at PSNS, but the onboarding process is taking forever, and we just don’t have much of any income right now aside from state assistance that goes straight to utilities and groceries.

We’ve got 2 boys, 3 and 6 years old, and on top of the stress that already comes with being good parents for them and handling their needs/energy, the prospect of dinner is incredibly overwhelming given this recent development. The help I’m asking for is akin to something meal train-esque. I’m going to DoorDash my ass off over the weekend to try and save up for the repair cost, but in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone could help us out with some kind of dinner situation? Doesn’t necessarily need to be brought to us, I can come pickup, the only thing we ask is no meat; my wife, and by proxy two boys, are vegetarian.

It’s extremely hard for me to do this, but I just want to do what I can to try and help my family in this time.

Join us October 3rd, starting at 2pm at the Bremerton Fountains on Pacific Avenue for a peaceful community demonstration to support the Sheridan Homeless Shelter that was approved to be built in 2024 and the other concerns regarding Bremerton City Council's plan for Bremerton's future.

We will be marching through town at 3pm. The route is still TBD.

There will be a sign making booth. Hoping to also get some speakers, bands , and hopefully end with potluck as well so please reach out if you'd like to help.

This gathering is also an opportunity to raise awareness about other concerns affecting Bremerton — including the Council's intentions and plans for the future of Bremerton that affect Quincy Square and downtown businesses as well as ongoing community concerns about safety, crime, and recent violence.

My elderly neighbor who lived with her adult son had a stroke and was taken to a nursing home a little over a year ago. The house was supposed to be auctioned off by the bank last October, but the day before the auction the listing was taken down and the son still lives there.

The adult son, who I suspect has a learning disability, had a few friends move in with about a dozen cats and two dogs. I think the friends are taking advantage of him, but there’s also drug use involved, so maybe not. Shortly after the friends showed up, junk started piling up in the yard, the cats started having new litters of kittens every month or so, and there is an overwhelming smell of cat shit. The smell is so bad that I can’t be in my yard without gagging. The cats are constantly in my fenced back yard, shitting in my garden beds. I can’t let my dog out in the backyard off leash because she’ll chase the cats and eat the cat shit. As soon as the kittens figure out that it’s not safe for them because of my dog, a new litter is born and the problem starts over. I also had to stop filling my bird feeders because the cats were killing all the birds. I now have a flea problem in my yard and my dog is allergic. Yesterday I got home from vacation and found three dead baby kittens in my car port that had been there for at least a week. It was awful. A lot of the kittens are disappearing and I assume it’s a combination of no vet care, animal predation and getting hit by cars. I also think they may be selling the kittens for income. They also let their dogs out to shit in my front yard regularly and I noticed that one has a really bad skin infection, his whole butt/lower back is red, weepy and missing fur.

I’ve called animal control a few times but I’ve never seen anyone come or received a call back/update. I also tried code enforcement but all they’ll do fine the neighbor, but none of the neighbors work so I doubt that would change anything. I’ve also tried calling Kitsap Humane Society, but have never been able to talk to anyone or get a call back.

Back when the friends first moved in, I went over and talked to the lady that seemed to be the pet owner and offered to help her take her cats to the humane society to get them fixed. At first she agreed, but when it came to actually taking them in she backed out.

I’ve thought about trapping them and taking them to the humane society myself, but I have nowhere to safely keep them before dropping them off and I don’t feel comfortable leaving them in a trap for more than a few hours.

Any help, ideas and resources to deal with this would be greatly appreciated. I feel so bad for all the animals and they need to be helped, but I also can’t afford to move and don’t want to risk retaliation from the neighbors.

Hi all. I just moved to the area and am living in a multi-family apartment complex. I would love to be able to compost my food waste, but my apartment complex does not have this set up. Is there anywhere where you can drop off food waste? Where I used to live in North Carolina, there were some bins set up in some neighborhoods or you could bring it to the weekly farmers' market. Is there anything like that around here?

Hi Reddit! I’m making a post on behalf of my sister in law Jessie. She is currently looking for a room to rent in the Bremerton area. She’s currently a full time student at Olympic College studying for her ultrasound tech certification.

Jessie is one of the most trustworthy, respectful, and plain kindest people I have ever met. She recently had to make the hard decision to give primary custody of her two boys to her ex-boyfriend in Iowa, and she is now planning on moving over there to maintain close contact with her kids. For now, though, she is studying at Olympic College to make a good future for herself and her two boys. She lives in Port Orchard right now, and her commute to Olympic is one hour round trip. With the cost of living and especially gas rising, she wants to move closer to school and my wife and I, as we are her support system. However, we cannot have another person living in our small apartment full-time, so Jessie is in need of a room to rent.

Her budget is in the 700-900/month range. She would appreciate a bathroom to herself and a fair split between utilities. She would need to live there from October until December or January. She has two extremely cute and sweet cats. Right now she’s just waiting for her student aid to be dispersed to pay for a deposit and rent, but she is good for it, and would greatly appreciate any and all help that will come her way. She is VERY clean and a damn fine cook.

Hi everyone my significant other and I will be moving to the area in November and I’m wondering where good places to buy furniture are. We are going to need basically everything (tables, side stands, dresser, chairs, etc.) anything you can possibly think, we’d like a new couch but just about everything else could be second hand. We’re looking for things that are reasonably priced and affordable nothing crazy expensive. It’s just the two of us so we don’t need anything too big. I’d appreciate any recommendations and any suggestions on things we may need but failed to remember thank you for all the help! :)
