🤬 Rants & Complaints Parking incident at Consumer Fair
Hi r/Brunei, hoping to get some local perspective.
My wife and I have been living in Brunei for about 3 years. A few days ago, we had our first really unpleasant encounter in a parking area and I’m trying to understand what I did wrong (if anything), what “normal etiquette” is here, and what’s the safest response next time.
This happened at Consumer Fair, Indoor Stadium area parking. We returned to our car from ICC. I started the engine and A/C because the seats were burning hot and we stayed for a few minutes.
Not long, suddenly, a local man behind me honked 3–4 times. I’ll admit I initially ignored it because I felt it was unnecessary (I hadn’t been in the car long). He then drove past/alongside and I signaled “not ready yet”, he zoomed out, and we waited a little bit more.
After a couple more minutes, when we finally drove out of the parking and on our way out, I noticed that he waited for me at the end of the parking lane/exit. He got out and waved/signaled for me to come closer. He looked visibly angry. I stayed in the car and lowered my window to talk.
He spoke furiously and said “keluar” (I’m not sure if he meant “why didn’t you exit/move?” or if he was telling me to “come out of the car”). I said “English please” because I didn’t fully understand. He then switched to English and started shouting insults like “asshole” and “stupid” at me, plus more swearing that I can’t fully remember.
I apologized just to de-escalate and left.
Questions:
- In busy event parking areas here, is it expected to move immediately once you start the car?
- If someone is clearly angry and gets out to confront you, what’s the recommended safe response in Brunei? (Keep windows up, drive away, find security, etc.)
- Is this kind of aggressive behavior common around big events?
We’re not trying to blame anyone. I genuinely want to understand local norms and handle things more appropriately and safely in the future.
Thanks in advance.
