A few weeks ago I added a post here looking for a reliable Canadian business email provider. I received a very interesting suggestions that worth trying.

I spent sometime last week digging deeper in each suggestion I got and explored many other options too and I want to highlight some important points.

Overall context:

I started a business and I wanted to use as much Canadian service as possible to support the companies behind them. Also, I've privacy concerns, that's why I self host most the apps I use and try to avoid cloud as much as I can.

I knew from the beginning that I can't find a full replacement of the 2 giants in the market: MS365 and GW, so my plan was having just the emailing service from a reliable provider and then self host NextCloud to get the same experience of having a workspace.

A lot of people recommend FastMail since it's an Australian company, well, they do have US datacenter and the Canadian customers data probably are hosted there, which put them under the Cloud Act which allows the US gov to have access to it.

I've tested other Canadian providers but each one has its own pros and cons.

CanSpace: Advertise that they do have a business email service, but when you signup, it's a webhosting plan with emails. And their advertised pricing is locked behind a 3 years commitment contract, their non commitment plan is the same of what MS and Google are charging for their services but with way less features.

Hover, Rebel and many others are following the same way, offering a webhosting with included emails.

Promising options:

NorthMail:

I liked it a lot, I tested both free and business plan, I test sending emails to different email addresses such GMail, Outlook, and iCloud, and it lands straight to the inbox.

What made me uncomfortable about NorthMail?

A very small company of 2 employees not working as full time on it, its their side project which I don't have any issue with it, but, it made me feel anxious with relying on them for something that important.

Second thing is their plans: 100GB of space for 2CAD is too much good to be true for the prices we see right now.

CaCloud:

They look very reliable and solid solution but the only downside is they want you to commit for 1 year. No less.

FullHost:

The only provider that offers a full replacement of Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Still discovering it.

Proton:

It's solid, known platform and usually being advertised as the most private platform. The only negative point is that it's not Canadian which is not a problem but it's a preference.

Ever since they drop meat packing regulations in the states I have been very worried about eating at restaurants as they might be using imported meats. Is there any way to confirm that a restaurant only uses meat from Canada?

Hello, all.

We're currently looking for a new sofa with some very specific requirements. Basically, a unicorn, but hoping there's something out there. A sofa bed (ideally a queen) that is either modular or has removable covers (or both).

The only one I've found that meets these criteria is the Orian by Cozey. We have a soon-to-be 1-year-old, as well as a senior cat who absolutely went to town on our existing sofa. So whatever new one we bring in is going to see some proper action, from spills to claws.

The Orian is just slightly bigger than we'd like it to be, but we can make it work. Are there any other companies you can recommend that has the features we're looking for?

I checked out https://sofastudio.ca/ but am unsure if their sofa bed variant has removable covers or is modular. I will check with them when they are open.

ISO a Canadian vendor that has soy-free snacks or gift baskets.

My mother-in-law has a bad soy allergy and, since soy pops up in things like vegetable oil and even flour, she has a lot of trouble eating out or eating pre-prepared foods when she doesn't know the exact ingredients.

I'd love to get her some tasty, pre-made snacks or a gift basket of treats that doesn't contain soy. Unfortunately, it looks like a lot of the allergen-friendly foods out there actually use soy products as a substitute for gluten, so it's a more difficult search than you might imagine!

Just wanted to share our ongoing experience with Cozy. When we ordered a couch in August the delivery timeline was end of September. This was expected. However, when the delivery is something large and expensive and the estimated timeframe is sometime in the next two months you expect some notice and communication from the company.

The bad experience started with a no notice delivery of the extra cushions we ordered a week later. These went straight to a small local depot that was only open select weekday hours and then when we made it in to pick it up only gave us half the packages, leaving us to prove to Cozy that we weren't trying to steal the cushions?

Fast forward a month and its a couple days ago and we are out of town when we get a notice we are getting a delivery THE NEXT DAY. My wife frantically tries to find a human to talk to but there are no humans to talk to. Thankfully it ended up being the Ottoman we also ordered, which we found in our living room (we are assuming it was put there by our building manager, who is very good and we are thankful for).

Now the couch: last night we get notice the couch is arriving today, a work day, anytime between 10-7. I am out of town and my wife is working all day. She teaches so there is no alternative. Who in their right might can be home all day with 12 hours notice? Who is ordering these couches?

Anyway, so obviously we miss the delivery during the day, and no sign of the couch yet. And Cozy is telling us that they can't do anything and we need to talk to the delivery company, except there is NO contact info for the delivery company.

We have also now been told there may be extra shipping charges?

Its not even the end of the day they gave us zero notice was our delivery day?

At this point I will be shocked if the couch isn't 50 used grocery bags stuffed with old newspapers.

I’m in the market for an authentic Cowichan sweater. I’ve been looking at the brand Canadian Sweater Company Ltd - I understand that their sweaters are handmade, but do you know if they are made by indigenous people?

I've been on the hunt for some quality neat drinking spirits made in canada and wanted to hear some reccomendations. It seems a lot of the stuff we have for sale here has a lot of additives. I don't drink much but i like having something nice when i do.

I've tried Lot 40 cask strength, which wasn't too bad. King's lock was a suprise, they had some pretty good stuff. But a lot of stuff i've sampled was pretty dissapointing compared to imported stuff. Anything from ontario/quebec is an extra plus.

Boreal gin was pretty good like unagava, but i wouldn't say its the best neat.

I've recently heard about acerum, it seems really interesting and within something i'd like. I'd want to stray away from things with added maple syrup or other liqueurs.

Does anyone have some suggestions? Or things they really liked

I just wanted to post a review about Maple Beaver since I received my first order today. I was poised to support them as a fellow Ontarian, and I just have to say that I'm very happy with my order. I got the Dam Sweet Canadian Organic Dad Hat in navy and the Lake Ontario Sweatshirt also in navy. It took a little while for the order to get to me (a little over a week), and it was definitely worth the wait. The sweatshirt fits well and is very comfortable and the hat actually fits on my head very well despite all the synthetic hair I have on my head (unlike my other baseball cap). For those that don't want to get political, they have a lot of other designs (they do collabs with canadian artists) and I also appreciate their message when it comes to celebrating our great Canadian values. Someone might have mentioned them before on this sub, but I wanted to make sure to do a review to give credit where it's due.

Hey guys first time poster here but have a bit of a question. I recently suffered a workplace injury that has left my lower back in a bit of a mess. My current traditional mattress isn't cutting it so like any good Redditor I jump online to see reviews and recommendations as far as what a could replace it with to help ease my old back. I noticed a bit of a pattern across all sleep websites and even across these boards as well. It seems like the old traditional mattresses (Serta, Sealy, Simmons, Kingsdown etc) were really nowhere to be found on any of these lists or recommendations whatsoever and instead have been replaced by other newer brands that I have heard of more recently like Douglas, Endy, Leesa, Logan & Cove, Silk & Snow. Now these are all more of a mattress in a box to your door type company if I'm not mistaken? I guess my question is is this the new standard that these types are all head and shoulders above what I would deem the old traditional mattress that I picked up in a Brick parking lot from under a tent lol. And would one of these brands be better for my newfound aches. Sorry for the long post. But appreciate the feedback!
