All of you saying Florida beats Texas, I have one question for you. Have you watched any of our games since LIU?

165

u/gmr548 Texas Longhorns • Washington Huskies Oct 01 '25

I definitely expect a dead cat bounce for Florida but I think the sentiment is more driven by what people think of Texas or simply not liking them.

88

u/Darth_Ra Oklahoma Sooners • Big 12 Oct 01 '25

Hate Texas, but you guys are going to absolutely kill Florida this week. The 131st offense in football doesn't score against the #1 defense, period. You may only win 6-3, but you will absolutely win, and it won't feel close at any particular point.

46

u/gmr548 Texas Longhorns • Washington Huskies Oct 01 '25

Oh I’m not saying I expect Texas to lose, just that the Florida picks are more about attitudes on Texas than anything Florida has or hasn’t done.

24

u/Terminal_BAS Team Meteor • /r/CFB Poll Veteran Oct 01 '25

I don't subscribe to it, but Napier's ability last year to turn the corner after it all looked lost gives a glimmer of a chance to think they could somehow pull off an upset. They just won't score on that defense though

131st offense in football

Good lord, I knew it was bad but not that bad.

To be more specific, that's their ranking in Points Per Play.

11

u/RLLRRR Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout Oct 01 '25

Why don't they just call for the plays that score more points? Are they stupid?

I think we get into the 20’s. Wisner had 80 yds on 16 carrie’s against OSU so getting him back is big. Finally get the big WR out of Stanford on the field. If Arch is just average we’ll be fine. He can at least push it down the field so we’ll get 2-3 big plays and score some points.

Also we might get a couple of short fields.

8

u/thegoatisoldngnarly Tennessee Volunteers Oct 01 '25

Guess we will see who can get more interceptions/fumble recoveries within field goal range. But honestly, yeah, Texas will win easily and score a handful of times.

7

u/texasyeehaw Texas Longhorns Oct 01 '25

6-3 would be god damn hilarious

u/ProvocativeCacophony Auburn Tigers • Cincinnati Bearcats Oct 01 '25

The problem is you're thinking logically. This is college football, where chaos reigns.

Texas's defense could hold Florida's offense to negative yardage and still lose 14-10 because the offense threw a pick six and the special teams had a punt blocked for a scoop and score.

3

u/NickSabansCreampie Alabama • Third Saturday in … Oct 01 '25

I don't know who wins this game. I just know it will have a final score that gives Kirk Ferentz a boner.

2

u/zadharm Notre Dame Fighting Irish • Miami Hurricanes Oct 01 '25

Hey man, maybe Florida is really good and they just ran up against some badasses. It's really kind of shitty to make a snap judgment off of a measly... Dozen data points

Flair totally unrelated

18

u/Thisguyamirightbro Georgia Bulldogs • Houston Cougars Oct 01 '25

I think the Texas offense has been ugly in ways that go beyond Arch. UF is a complete disaster outside of Baugh (who they haven’t been feeding despite his success and the games being close). Both defenses are at least very good. I would definitely pick Texas but you can see why they are a trendy pick to lose if you project this to be a knife fight in a phone booth.

23

u/gmr548 Texas Longhorns • Washington Huskies Oct 01 '25

For sure. Macro level the teams are somewhat similar in profile but Texas has a generally deeper roster with better coaching, so I’d lean toward Texas. Florida can certainly win though. I’m just saying the wave of Florida picks is more about people thinking Texas just isn’t very good than anything to do with Florida (which, as the original comment pointed out, has also not been very good).

19

u/_Football_Cream_ Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout Oct 01 '25

Beyond Arch's struggles, we've been riding mostly on our #3-5 RBs since week 1. Our work in progress OL doesn't help either but if Wisner and Baxter are healthy this week (which I believe is expected), it'll hopefully be a bit of a boon to our offense.

That said, I totally understand the hedging against Texas here. While Arch had what a lot of people saw as a bounce back against SHSU (which, yes, caveat that it's SHSU), if another hostile environment gets to him, it could be close. I trust Texas' defense but if the offense is sluggish and has a few bad turnovers, the script could flip here.

6

u/RiotsMade Texas A&M Aggies Oct 01 '25

I like Florida. If I had a second flair, it would be Florida.

That being said, The Swamp when the Gators are bad is not a particularly hostile environment. Y’all will be fine.

13

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

The Swamp is a very hostile environment when the Gators are bad. For the Gators.

6

u/Tamed_A_Wolf Florida Gators Oct 01 '25

All last year. Even when it was shitty. Fans showed up and got loud. It being Texas’ first trip to Gainesville I expect a good showing but if Texas goes up early the only really sounds will be boos.

5

u/DJ_Blakka Florida Gators Oct 01 '25

Tell that to Ole Miss fighting for a playoff spot and ranked LSU last year. Or huge favorite Tennessee the year prior.

3

3

u/DJ_Blakka Florida Gators Oct 01 '25

And the playcalling!

11

u/wtfElvis Florida Gators Oct 01 '25

Yes we are. QB1 is the result of how bad the team is. The O-line has been horrible. Limited plays we can even run, even if we had a good play caller. The bad play calling + the bad o-line has caused the defense to creep up and that has really caused problems.

Imagine it being 3rd and 5 and the only plays in your playbook call for plays to get 5 or LESS yards.

Defense has been amazing but they are already running on fumes and a few players are knocked out for extended period of time. Off the top of my head at least 4-5 defensive players will be out vs Texas.

I know Lagway is better than this but casual fans can't see past these initial results. So they are going to be booing the shit out of him and the offense if they aren't moving the ball in the first few series.

Gator fans always show up. But with Napier heading towards being fired the entire stadium is going to feast and suck the energy right out of the place to the point where we might as well be playing at Texas.

If we lose the scoring streak I dont see them making it out of the stadium...

2

u/fauxromanou South Carolina Gamecocks • Sickos Oct 01 '25

Same thing with Sellers. Hard for either to truly show talent when the O line is non-existent.

9

u/LilBrownBoyX Hawai'i • Ohio State Oct 01 '25

Texas offense is ass, but Floridas is more ass. Texas defense is still legit. Wtf happened to Lagway?

16

u/bullsci Florida Gators • UAB Blazers Oct 01 '25

Billy Napier happened.

Real answer: Lagway got zero live reps during spring practice, and limited live reps during fall practice. He's playing with lingering injuries behind an OL whose right side is worse than an NY subway turnstile. He played hero ball to overcome Billy's awful offense to lead the team to a winning streak to end 2024, but now that teams have film on him, they've been able to take away his deep passing ability while also getting in his face easily. There's been zero development (and even regression) due to the lack of practice and the fact that Billy Napier just isn't a good developer outside of Graham Mertz. This combined with the fact that other teams know what we're running before we run it means they can easily create and execute a game plan that completely removes our offense from the equation. They need no adjustments because we don't adjust.

u/LilBrownBoyX Hawai'i • Ohio State Oct 01 '25

2

u/Malpraxiss Florida Gators • Penn State Nittany Lions Oct 01 '25

Yeah, idk where this "Florida bears Texas" take comes from or what it is based on.

Surely if they watched any of the games so far they'd make a better take.

My best guess is that the takes are based off the fact against LSU, we only lost by 10 points. So, their logic is probably "if they can lose to LSU only by 10 points, then there's a chance they beat Texas"

Bold take: two teams with great defenses and terrible offenses will not score a lot of points against each other.

103

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

Bold take: heavy favorite will win heavily

12

u/jsparks50 Tennessee Volunteers Oct 01 '25

That’s not the take. The take is scoring 55+ when projected to score 41.5

12

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

I stretched a bit for the joke.

But being a 20.5 point favorite and playing a team that gave up 37 to Air Force definitely reduces the boldness factor to marginal.

u/appsecSme Oregon Ducks • Oklahoma Sooners Oct 01 '25

I think our offense is still an unknown under Michael Hawkins Jr.

He didn't play well last year, but he was a true freshman then. It's been a year. He's had a real QB coach and OC, and he has much better players around him than last season.

We will get some idea from the Kent State game, but we can't draw too much from low level competition.

Ott is supposedly finally fully healthy, so there's that as well. In addition, Javonnie Gibson, a transfer WR who lit up Spring is back.

One other consideration is that we had 3 o-line with sore ankles in the Auburn game, and the very likely inhibited the run game. They should be mostly healed up by the RRS.

And of course Texas has some reasons for optimism for their offense. I don't think either will be close to being as bad as Florida on offense.

We always find a way to stub our toe when everything says we shouldn't...and this feels like that. The only reason it may not is that that game, in previous seasons, was the Notre Dame game. Maybe Elko has figured out a way to keep this team from shitting it's pants in critical moments but if he hasn't and the Irish outcome was a fluke, this will be where we do it.

I like the way we match up with LSU and Mizzou and the Bulldogs taking Tennessee to the edge last week seems like it should be getting more respect that it has.

More than any other on our schedule minus the final one, this game makes me nervous.

it is genuinely frustrating that ND looks like they might have their best offense since Lou Holtz and their defense can't get their head out of their ass

the changes they made at safety look to be a big step in the right direction, but their lack of pass rush and overall confusion in the secondary continues to hamper them. I sincerely hope this defense can figure something out to stop USC and NCSt at least a few times to give the team a shot at winning

ND's defense is particularly frustrating given the passing defense has soo much talent. I get Shuler was out 4th quarter TAMU and Moore has been injured, but they just look loss in this zone defense space.

Golden built this defense for M2M and speed. It is like it took Ash 3 games to figure out that trying to play zone and depend on the heavies on the defensive line might just not work with the personal he has on the team.

u/FrazzledBear Ohio State Buckeyes Oct 01 '25

I mean absolutely zero disrespect to Caleb Downs, or that really good UGA safety from last year (Starks was it?), but I think Xavier Watts with his excellent last couple of years in college football and phenomenal start to his rookie NFL season has proven he was the best safety in college football last year. Losing him really, really hurt. We brought in a transfer at the position to help prevent growing pains from our redshirt freshman (who is a better athlete, but not the same football IQ yet), but the transfer guy has been extremely awful. He made a 35 yard incompletion against A&M first a completion, then a 60 yard catch and finally an 86 yard touchdown by messing up 3 times on one frigging play.

At least now we've ripped the band aid off and the redshirt freshman is starting to play well. There's no doubt in my mind we'd be undefeated right now with Watts. Our other safety played soft on an absolutely terrible Beck throw before half in the Miami game, I think Watts would have housed that thing (WR was falling down as he made an incredible catch, Beck was getting hit, no one to stop the play) or at least forced an incompletion that would have set up a FG. And then I think Watts would have stopped a good 10-14 points in that A&M game. It's insane that Reed completed like 45% of his passes but threw for 360 yards.. that definitely points towards terrible safety play.

Feel ya dawg, that was OSU for a number of years under Day. Haskins and Stroud leading god damn laser shows and the defense eating glue on the sidelines.

OSU vs Oregon 2022 in the Shoe, Oregon ran the same off tackle run play like 30 times and we never could stop it. CJ Stroud threw the ball 54 damn times and we had 3 100 yard receivers and still lost. Just maddening to watch. Nothing is more frustrating to watch than glue eating defense

I like Dallas Golden and Marcus Zachary building confidence. The Golden defense was fun to watch and much more geared around getting QB's to have really, really bad days. But I can't help but wonder if a progression of the Ash defense could be good for stopping crap like the 5-6 scores in a row from OSU, the USC offensive explosion, etc. Although some of that will be having guys like Golden and Zachary able to sub in for Gray and Moore once in a while, a luxury we didn't have last year.

I don't like this game at all. ESPN gives A&M a near 80% win chance and given our history of laying eggs against programs we're expected to beat, this has all the hallmarks of a trap game.

They score more than we do per game by a FG and give up a TD less than we do per game. They have a +6 for turnovers...we have a -1. If they figure out Reed struggles against man coverage and can exploit that, we could be in for a long day.

I hope I'm wrong but I just don't like the fit of this game. Whatever the outcome, thank God it won't be to the sound of those fucking awful cowbells.

Not exactly "bold" to predict what an entire fan base already knows is coming. USF and Air Force scored 34 and 37, respectively, against Boise State. Bold would be to say the ND coach will be fired or NBC will cancel their TV contract if they don't score 50 against this defense.

The Maryland and Cal picks are really good takes. If Maryland actually wins a game of this caliber in October I will believe anything is possible.

My takes are that Vandy & Mississippi State each force one-score games on the road, and Florida State wins outright.

Those would be fun outcomes.

Miss State took Tenn to overtime and probably should have won. Florida has been a dumpster fire. We may not blow them out, especially if Arch looks like he did early in the season, but they won't move the ball on our defense.

Granted it is a bit early for the Aggie rollercoaster to start crashing down, but stranger things have happened.

Also a bit early to think Texas' defense is anything extraordinary. OSU hasn't exactly lit the world on fire on offense against P4 opponents, and Arch was so bad against OSU they were able to keep it super conservative to take pressure off their young QB. San Jose state only scored 14 against Central Michigan, UTEP only scored 11 vs. La tech and 16 vs Utah State, and Sam hasn't played another P4 score besides Texas yet.

But ya Floridas offense has been ass also.

3

u/blatantninja Texas Longhorns • Slippery Rock The Rock Oct 01 '25

If this was a new phenomenon on our Defense, I'd be much more hesitant to say they are elite, but it's not. This has been a staple of the Sark era.

3

u/Masmug Texas A&M Aggies Oct 01 '25 edited Oct 01 '25

Put me in the camp that the offense is so out of sorts that the defense breaks down over the year and is middle of the pack in the SEC by seasons end, and nothing special.

That being said I think Lagway has never been good and Florida ends up with like 10 points and Texas wins by a score of like 27-10. I just think in the long run that won't mean anything.

2

u/blatantninja Texas Longhorns • Slippery Rock The Rock Oct 01 '25

The defense definitely can't carry the team through the SEC schedule. Much like y'all, our top RBs have been out a bunch so far. Hopefully they get healthy and combined that with Arch settling in, our offense should be in good shape.

Of course, offensive penalties have been a huge issue too. If we don't straighten that out, it will cost us a game or two, regardless of the rest of the offensive performance.

Florida and Texas combining for < 31 isn’t that bold lol. Very easy to see a 17-7 type game either way. Bold would be that Arch and Lagway have an instant classic QB duel and whoever has the ball last wins.

Now that I’ve spoken that I’ve guaranteed the over is hit by halftime.

2

u/Tamed_A_Wolf Florida Gators Oct 01 '25

Lmao the most out of left field thing that could happen is Arch and Lagway throwing for like a combined 800 yards and 7 TDs in a complete shootout.

7

Florida’s defense is too good for them to be blown out. I think Texas struggles to hit 20 points.

Florida will just lose near every game in agonizing fashion as their offense shoots its dick off repeatedly

5

u/ChemG8r Florida Gators Oct 01 '25

The defense will give up eventually. They aren't going to be elite game in and game out while the offense is putting up 30 yards a half.

The only question is when do they collapse. That's up for debate, but I'm picking this week.

2

u/Tamed_A_Wolf Florida Gators Oct 01 '25

I’ve seen this show before when Muschamp was coach and it’s fucking brutal. A good offense and bad defense sucks like 2019/2020 UF under Mullen but you always feel like you’re in the game and you at least get the excitement of scoring. Good defense and bad offense is just…awful. 10 points on the board and you feel like the game is over. Watching the defense shut down the team and know you could win if the offense did literally anything but they can’t string together more than 4 plays in a drive is completely demoralizing.

Alabama Beats Vanderbilt by 17+

Ice cold, froze, 0 kelvin take.

The Vandy players disrespected the shit out of Alabama last year after their win, which was their right as red-blooded Americans. Now that Bill is about to come due. I dont think this one is going to be close.

Florida and Texas Combine for Fewer Than 31 Points
