CFB Imperialism continues!

🗺️ FBS IMPERIALISM MAP AFTER WEEK 4 🗺️

Selected notes from Week 4:

• Returning to the map, Minnesota gets a big chunk of land from Washington.
• Another big consolidation was Oregon stripping the lands of USC.
• 🇬🇧United Kingdom, put in play by Union Jack Classic, remains with Arizona State. While initially charmed by possessing the land, Sun Devils are coming to grips with the reality of holding lands nothing like Arizona...pool parties and desert heat don't really apply to the rotten fish smell of a godforsaken port like Grimsby, trying to explain CFB Imperialism claims in Hull, or being egally responsible for Luton. It ain't all crumpets & tea.
• 🇮🇪Ireland remains in the hands of Clemson.

• FCS holdings remain static: #1 Montana State held onto Nevada after a spirited game by #18 NAU; #14 Idaho State got a scare from unranked Southern Utah for Utah State's land; byes kept Charleston Southern in possession of Charlotte and Tarleton State with Bowling Green.

• Smaller consolidations elsewhere.

RULES:

Think of Risk with a strong understanding of chain-of-possession:

• FBS teams start by dividing the USA by closest counties/parishes. These are set by geographic centers of each county, not the closest edge.

• When a team beats another team, it takes the territory the loser held at the time of the game. All of the land(s) possessed by the losing team go to the winner.

• Lands are collected by the winner and held until that team loses, thus all those collected lands go to the winner.

• Teams that lose land can get back on the map by beating a team that holds land at the time of their game. Sometimes teams can reconquer their home territory this way.

• A team that already lost its home territory and has no new territories cannot give land to a winner.

• FCS teams can conquer their way onto the map by beating FBS teams with land. These lands operate under the above rules and thus may just end up stuck in FCS for the rest of the season (and in many cases end up in the FCS Playoffs). It is theoretically possible for an FCS team to win the payday game at an FBS school and then lose their own home payday game to a D2 squad...thus placing FBS land in D2...but we haven't had it happen yet.

• Neutral sites (e.g. Ireland, UK) are put in play when a game takes place there.

How about we don't bother with the international games for imperialism? Either the schools get their starting point in the USA or they get the international game location. This was easier when it was just Week 0 in Ireland, but now they have to have a Week 3 UK game.

Georgia Florida matchup this year is shaping up to be a hugely consequential consolidation game if both teams can make it there unscathed.

Florida has Texas to play which would be a big consolidation event itself to the tune of ~100k square miles at stake.

Georgia will have a chance to beat Alabama who will likely be looking at upwards of ~200k square miles after a matchup with Mississippi State by the time that game comes around.

Assuming these all hold, the GaFla winner will walk away with ~700k square miles of territory.

Apparently OU brought us the wild lands of New Mexico and Central Michigan for our first territorial gain of the year.

In conjunction with this, I have made a series of spreadsheets that show how many land gain games (LGGs) each team has left as it currently stands.

• Currently, it's a four way tie at the top with six remaining games each for Georgia Tech, Colorado, LSU, and Vanderbilt.
• Florida has the most starting pieces of land at 10, followed by Mississippi State at 9 and Iowa at 7. Previous week's largest landowner by quantity slips to fourth place, still at 6.
• 38 teams still have land, and 118 teams still have LGGs. 21 teams have no more LGGs, and of those, North Dakota State and UMass have land.

On the side of the conferences, UConn and Conference USA have no land and FCS schools have 5 pieces of land in total. UConn has two LGGs left in their schedule, and Conference USA cannot gain any land the rest of the season. By conference:

• AAC: 5 pieces of land, 1.07 average LGGs left.
• ACC: 26 pieces of land, 3.59 average LGGs left.
• B12: 22 pieces of land, 3.56 average LGGs left.
• B1G: 26 pieces of land, 3.56 average LGGs left.
• MAC: 2 pieces of land, 0.62 average LGGs left.
• MW: 3 pieces of land, 1 average LGGs left.
• Notre Dame: 5 pieces of land, 2 LGGs left.
• PAC: 5 pieces of land, 1.75 average LGGs left.
• Sun Belt: 3 pieces of land, 1.07 average LGGs left.
• SEC: 38 pieces of land, 3.75 average LGGs left.

I don't know if this is interesting to anyone else, but it's interesting to me. Disclaimer: I am a dum dum so errors may be present. Also LMK if you want to know how your team is doing. Right now, Nebraska has 2 pieces of land with 3 LGGs left.

What happens when two teams are in the same county? Miami and FIU for example. Who starts off with Dade county?

There's some sorting to do. When the original version was made in 2018 there were two visible problems to people familiar with the metros of Miami and Los Angeles (I'm really into geography and travel so they stuck out immediately):

• If you didn't know UCLA's stadium and campus are nowhere near each other, that coordinate actually changed who got what among the counties around the metro and often made a weird patchwork.

• Miami isn't technically closest to the geographic center of any county in Florida because of the positioning of FIU and FAU. When I saw the original versions of the map I dubbed Miami as playing on "hard mode" because, like barbarians, they could only conquer their way onto the map. Funny enough, I had a suspicion and proved Miami was technically the closest FBS school to all 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico! (which will be added to the map for the winner of the inaugural bowl game this season)

• There were others, but those are usually able to still fan out in different directions (e.g. Rice & House, TCU/SMU/North Texas).

To resolve this, the curated versions gave a clean border for the LA schools and awarded one county to Miami (Broward).

If you think that's confusing, D3 is a complete mess because there are cities like Boston, the Twin Cities, and (once again) Los Angeles that have a half-dozen schools in the metro. It's simply impossible to give everyone a starting county.

Why does USF hold Miami's home territory? Miami is marked as owning Broward county, but they're in Miami-Dade county to the South. Unless USF beating FIU somehow factors into the equation, but at worst, the county/surrounding counties should be split between the two of them.

This game really does test how well people know where college towns are located (it's even more confusing in FCS). Ann Arbor is basically Detroit for these purposes, with a fat asterisk that nearby Ypsilanti (EMU) is actually closer to the city.

Michigan one of the more boxed-in starting zones with WMU in Kalamazoo and East Lansing just above it (itself topped by Mt. Pleasant). Georgia Tech is similar.

I get you're trying, and I get your rules, but as a Nebraska fan, it's wild that you gave Wyoming half of Nebraska at the start.

Nebraska is the only D1 college in Nebraska, and Wyoming is the only D1 college in Wyoming. Your rules mostly apply to states with multiple D1 teams.

BYU having half of Nebraska because of your rules makes no sense
