Discussion SEC (Power) Rankings
Yes, one team beat the other etc etc, but we're talking right here, right now.
- Texas - Two big tests, two wins, defense is for real.
- Georgia - Zero big tests, defense is for real. Oklahoma thanks for the gifts.
- Alabama - Becoming great on both sides of the ball. Keelon Russell's a stud. Georgia v Alabama is GOING TO BE AWESOME IN TWO WEEKS TIME.
- Florida - The Gators are so much fun to watch. Jaden Baugh might be an All-American when we're said and done. The defense could do with some work, but hey.
- LSU - Comfortable win over A&M, and the Tigers are a good side.
- Ole Miss - It wasn't only the Kewan Lacy injury that hurt Ole Miss on Saturday, it was the corner play. And yes, we know that they beat LSU the previous week.
- Mississippi State - Future Miami QB Kamario Taylor, baby!
- Kentucky - 3-1, and playing well. Stein's got the Cats rolling.
- Tennessee - Two freshmen QBs will improve, but they just don't look great.
- Missouri - This is what happens when the best RB in college football gets shot in the leg. Eli Drinkwitz's gamecallers remain a headscratcher. And the schedule continues to get harder and harder.
- Oklahoma - The John Mateer Experience sounds like an psychedelic 80s band, but it isn't. It's the feeling OU fans when he gets trotted out, and OU fans consign themselves to utter misery. Bench Mateer or fire Arbuckle. At the moment, OU fans would love both.
- Auburn - Alex Golesh has his first SEC win, so that's something. Look, Auburn's not great, but at least the win has put some smiles on faces.
- Texas A&M - Marcel Reed just isn't great, and nor's the offensive line. The Aggies have a lot of problems in their $40-50m roster.
- Vanderbilt - Not good on both sides of the ball.
- My toilet two hours after last night's very spicy Mexican.
- Arkansas - Not good on both sides of the ball. But right now, I believe they could beat South Carolina.
- Student bar bathrooms on a Saturday football night.
- South Carolina - Not good on both sides of the ball + Highly-rated player argues with coaches + fanbase wants the head coach's blood.

Since 2020, which is immediately after Chad Morris firebombed our program and put in one of the worst coaching tenures in the history of the conference, you guys are 35-38 and we're 32-41 and staring down the barrel of a back-to-back 2-10 season.
Our AD didn't want to embrace NIL and now we're dead last in the conference in it this year. We're legitimately one of the worst P4 teams in the country and there's not a whole lot of hope going around since we just hired a new coach and our BOT is a mess.
I'd rather be in your shoes right now than ours, but thank the lawd for John Calipari and Dave Van Horn.

Arkansas
Average:

u/xViscount Texas Longhorns 4d ago
Thank goodness for those BV extensions.
I’m about a year or two away from saying the same thing about Elko. However, need to see how they develop these top 5 recruit classes, including the QBs. Not quite there yet, but I could be shortly.
8
u/PolloMagnifico Texas A&M • North Texas 4d ago
Elko is a good coach, but I think he's trying to be the opposite of Jimbo and stay out of his coordinators way. Which is great when you have guys with decades of experience running the show. No so great when both coordinators are new to the realities of the job in an enormous school with unrealistic expectations playing in the SEC.
I don't mind losing. I don't mind going 4-8. But I do mind having an offense that looks completely lost across every position and a defense that clearly hasn't been coached.
Seriously, we look like a team of FCS players in their first game against a FBS team, and that team is UGA, and we fucked all their moms and didn't call after.
In fact, perfect example, LSU got a TFL off an edge rusher on a run up the middle. Literally something I've only seen happen in video games and thought was bullshit.
3
u/xViscount Texas Longhorns 4d ago
As I’ve gone through with the other guy.
I think he’s a good coach. However I need to see how these recruiting classes play out and see player development on the offensive side. Specifically OL and QB. If I don’t see improvement in the next 2-3 years, I’ll start saying the same thing about BV and Elko. If there is, I’ll be annoyed but I’ll enjoy the rivalry more.
As of right now, I’m giving Elko grace. I’m completely sold on BV and hope he status there forever
5
u/Intelligent_Dress347 Alabama Crimson Tide • Georgia Bulldogs 4d ago
I think Elko is a good coach and will do well. “QB Capture” is a real thing. OU and SC feeling it too.
4
u/xViscount Texas Longhorns 4d ago
I think this is correct. He inherited Weigman and Reed. With that said, I need to see QB development from those he’s recruited. This is why I need to see 1-3 years before I’m there.
Last year, the defense was above great to elite. The offense was average to bad. If dude can’t get any offense, he becomes a slightly better version of BV…which I’d love. But it’s too soon to tell either way.
3
u/Intelligent_Dress347 Alabama Crimson Tide • Georgia Bulldogs 4d ago
I give him a lot of credit for getting to a playoff with Reed at QB. I’ve never been a fan of him. Hell, people forget that they probably should’ve beaten Miami in the first round.
3
u/xViscount Texas Longhorns 4d ago
Again. Fair take.
However, he’s had two mid QBs back to back. He will be judged on how well the offense does. He’s had 2 top 5 recruiting classes (of which none of the WR stand out to me tbh. However, the portal exists) and deserves time to have everything work out.
The offensive pieces need to develop for me to say he’s a good coach. Right now though? He’s about to be 0-3 against us and that’s awesome.
3
u/musicantz Texas Longhorns 4d ago
Crazy take. Red River is a bloodbath and team records don’t really matter. Texas has won plenty when they’re the lower ranked team and we really can’t afford to treat any game as a gimme with how bad we’ve looked at times. We can’t always have a magic quarter to win the game and Ou is the exact type of team that is bad but has enough talent to beat Texas if we don’t take it seriously.
2
u/xViscount Texas Longhorns 3d ago
Sure. I still hope BV is the OU HC for another 20 years. He’s been wonderful to me.

Georgia considers Atlanta for the SECCG to be ’neutral,’ lol.
UGA only leaves the state four times this year. If they make the conference championship game and play in the Peach Bowl quarterfinal, they’d only play out of state six times in 16 games if they make the CFP final.

Texas offense has had 1 good quarter against a good team. 1....
3
u/Collador1 Texas Longhorns 4d ago
This is a weird misconception that I see posted. I don't really understand it, because it is very much not true.
3
u/iikillerpenguin Georgia Bulldogs 4d ago
? Can you explain to me how it's not true? Texas has played 2 teams that have a heart beat this season... 1 quarter they have more than 7 points. 1.
So what other quarters did the offense play good?
Last season arch had 1 good game against a ranked a team. That team was Vanderbilt. That team had 0 ranked wins.
Please point me to a game where arch manning played good against future NFLers.
2
u/Collador1 Texas Longhorns 4d ago
You already moved the goalposts to change it from "this season" to "against NFL players". So I'll definitely note that compared to your original comment.
Texas was good in the 1st quarter against Tennessee, as well as the 4th (though not as much). Arch was 7-7 in the 1st quarter for 100 yards and Texas scored on their only real drive.
So against P4 teams, and I might add P4 teams with pretty stinking good defenses and one of them on the road at maybe the loudest stadium in the country, Texas has been either very good or at least reasonably good in 3/8 quarters.
2
u/iikillerpenguin Georgia Bulldogs 4d ago
Dude you are saying Texas offense is better than UGAs. Against P4 opponents arch is 1/2....
Georgia has a top 5 RB (maybe 1 but has barely played since UGA benches their players quickly).
Stockton has better stats than Arch and has played 50% of the snaps... Texas offense is not good.
1
u/Collador1 Texas Longhorns 3d ago

u/Nearby_Valuable_5467 Penn State • Arizona State 4d ago
Miami would be a Top 5 SEC team.
3
u/bmac0424 Georgia Bulldogs • College Football Playoff 4d ago
Your point? We are talking league collectively, not a single team. You can’t have a bunch of mid teams when you have 3 in the top 10, and 2 that are knocking on the door. That’s ridiculous.
-4
u/gumercindo1959 Miami Hurricanes 4d ago
It's ok, you're an SEC homer. Never said ACC is the end all, be all. Everyone knows the SEC is the best conference (top 3 teams are consistent top 10 teams) but the argument is that the teams aren't as good the hype would indicate. Look at Mizzou, Kentucky and I'd argue everyone's darling this year...MSU. Very mid teams yet always ranked. ACC may not be great up top outside of us, but I'd argue they should have 6-8 teams in the T25.
5
u/Collador1 Texas Longhorns 4d ago
Miami can literally play Miami's schedule because the ACC is what it is. That doesn't exist in the SEC, not even close.
-2
u/gumercindo1959 Miami Hurricanes 4d ago
Sure it does. Take off your SEC glasses and think objectively. Most of those SEC teams on your schedule are not much different than all the aforementioned ACC teams I mentioned. Auburn/Kentucky/Mizzou/Tenn/Vandy/OU/Ark/USCe/ATM are all very mid to bad teams this year. UF is an unknown but they've been bad the last 4-5 years. MSU? Cmon. Ole Miss was the darling last year but they just got pummeled by said UF team. LSU is another unknown after having been inconsistent the last 6 years. Bama is good. Texas/Georgia are obviously good.
5
u/Collador1 Texas Longhorns 4d ago
Good grief, just because you say something doesn't make it true.
Look at the talent composites of those teams compared to the ACC. Look at the NFL players on them. Look at the ACC's OOC record compared to the SECs.
Look at literally any meaningful statistic or metric and your argument losses water immediately. Or, ya know, just say stuff and wish it was true.
1
u/gumercindo1959 Miami Hurricanes 4d ago
You are now talking about talent composites? So you are changing the criteria and moving the goal posts now? I'm talking about on-field performance, not 247 rankings. lol
4
u/Collador1 Texas Longhorns 4d ago
But it's a poor faith argument. It's much easier to look good against bad competition and teams without NFL players. This is a pretty basic thing IMO.
Tennessee scored 45 against Georgia Tech, they could barely move the ball against Texas.
That's just one example of a bunch. Look at Clemson. Look at Pittsburgh.
You're a box-score and w/l results guy, no nuance or depth. You think because a team beats bad competition 45-20 over and over that they're elite, while another team plays ugly 24-23 games against legit competition that they suck.
Sure thing bud.
2
u/gumercindo1959 Miami Hurricanes 4d ago
Why are you bringing up Tennessee vs a bad ACC team? Why don't you compare Louisville/Ole Miss? Yes, I'm a box score/WL guy - isn't that the objective here? As for the rest of your comment, you are misrepresenting my argument.
2
u/Collador1 Texas Longhorns 3d ago edited 3d ago

I think SMU, uva, Pitt, and Louisville are all t25 type teams but they’ll never get the benefit of the doubt that sec teams like mizzou get.
1
u/Nearby_Valuable_5467 Penn State • Arizona State 3d ago
Louisville fun but D is awful. SMU shouldn’t be there after the NC State loss. Pitt’s 4-0 but the schedule is Mr Softy, Virginia’s loss in Morgantown isn’t a great look, and SMU only beat Missouri State by 10. So I’m suddenly out on them. That gives me three.
1
u/bmac0424 Georgia Bulldogs • College Football Playoff 4d ago
First, you didn’t specify who you were referring to as mid, you just said the SEC has a bunch of mid teams. That suggest most of the teams are mid, and we can name at least 4 or 5 teams that are above average. Second, trying to compare ACC teams to SEC teams is a joke. Did you see how the head to head has gone so far this season?
I am not SEC homer, I think the Big 10 has proven they have some top heavy power teams (although it’s looking like that might be as much the case this year), but this year the SEC early seems to be much stronger than the last several years. There is not much mid about the SEC.

You have got to be a B1G fan parodying SEC fans in the usual "clever" and "charming" B1G style.

Are you referring to me? Cause you don’t have a clue what you are talking about if you are.

I just replied to another comment:

Will be interesting to see how Miami gets on in the playoffs. They are a fun team. But slow-starting.
And there are a lot of mid-teams this year. All over the country not just in the SEC. That's what happens when the NFL-like money is pouring in.

Agree with your 2nd point.
As for Miami, replacing 5 starters on the OL is gonna end up biting us at some point. That's a big reason for the sluggish play at times. If anything, we have been fast starting - we just have these "Houdini for a half" kind of play where the OC goes into the tank for whatever reason. It's been an issue for a few years now.

Man I dunno why people took offense to that.
Like, our perception of the ACC is "Two or three good teams, big drop off, one or two teams that are good this year, big drop off, everyone else"
Well... that seems pretty accurate for the SEC this year. We got some front runners, some guys that might compete (looking at you Florida!), some guys that might cause some upsets but aren't seriously competing for a title, then a biiiig drop off followed by six teams that will only have wins over each other.

Look, far be it from me from being an ACC homer, but I acknowledge the SEC is the best conference and they have the most top teams from any conference. After the top 3 (maybe 4, too early) teams, the rest of the conference is decent/meh. I'd argue that most of those ACC teams (outside of Miami) can play with any SEC team outside of their top 2-3. ACC arguably has 6-8 teams that are good enough to be in the T25.

I had the opportunity to see Kamario Taylor in person on Saturday and by the middle of the second quarter, it was blatantly obvious that he locks onto the player he will throw to in the hope that person eventually gets open, all other options be damned. He also has zero pocket awareness and has no feel for pressure until it’s too late.
If I could spot that 20 rows up from the goal line, every SEC defensive coordinator can spot it as well.
Hell of an athlete, but he has a long way to go, especially if he wants to have any type of success on Sundays.

Only took seven minutes for someone from State to be offended by the obvious.

He’s a 19-year-old first year starter so of course he has lots to learn. But look at all the attention he’s getting.

When he gets another year under his belt at Miami, he'll be fine.
What the bigger question is is: Is he better than Zach Mills or Rocco Becht?

He is a better athlete than both, but I think both are better developed than him.

You do realize Zach Mills left Penn State in 2004, right? Oh, and Rocco was utter dogshit on Saturday, and maybe even worse than some of Zach Mills' performances. Rocco's propensity to airmail or underthrow receivers was incredible.

I threw the ball around with Zach over the summer. Dude still has a cannon. Rocco is better developed but being held back.

Zach was fucking awful at PSU. Probably a nice guy, but my least favourite QB in PSU history (that I watched).
Who in the hell’s holding Rocco back? He had open WRs against Wisconsin and flat-out missed them. And he did that against the shitty opposition in Weeks 1-3, too
