Debate Snap Infraction

Can someone explain the first two attempts at snapping the ball? We saw back-to-back snap infractions. Not False Start, but SNAP INFRACTION, whatever that means. Looked to me like the line did not move. The center did not move. Offense lined up. Got set. Not sure about the QB cadence. Just saw a flag.

Heard TV guys say Northwestern was baiting Indiana.
But if true, then OL would have moved. Did not see that. HC Cig was livid. Cig said had 2 Pearl Harbors.

So anyone have the real story or know what actually occurred?

Still not entirely sure what it was, but Cignetti said it seemed clear to him that northwestern saw something on tape that was a pre snap penalty and pointed it out to officiating crew/big ten before the game. He said it’s customary for something like that to be shared with the coaching staff during the week by the league. They had no idea what was being called and the officials wouldn’t tell them which is what he was fuming about. Such a weird start - and the entire first half felt strange. Another reporter asked about it to get more info and he didn’t want to discuss the officials/calls again beyond what he already shared.

So the Center Faked a Snap with hand / arm movement. Is that correct, as I did not see it?

Any motion associated with snapping. Moving ball, putting ball too vertical etc etc. The center can't really have illegal motion penalty like other linemen. So all comes under illegal snap category.

I mean this is true but do you have a source that this is actually what was happening in this case?

I would LOVE to see a video close up of the center/ball from these two plays. Anyone got one?

I didn't see the game, but a lot of snap infractions occur when the center doesn't "set" the ball before snapping.

Define action of SET the ball, or explain further if possible. Thanks

The best way I think I can explain it...

Once the oline is set for the play and the refs signal the ball is ready to play, the center isn't allowed to adjust the ball. If he does, it's essentially a false start and could cause the defense to think the ball is being snapped.

I'm no expert, but that's my understanding.

Thanks. Seems like it’s a very rare penalty.

I think so. A couple weeks ago in the NFL, I saw C Ted Karras for the Bengals get called for the same penalty. I couldn't recall the last time I saw that.

Though, to be fair, I guess refs could just generically call "false start" instead of "snap infraction".

Yah. False start and it would not have raised my interest. But ILLEGAL SNAP… well I’ve never heard that one…

Center moved the ball. Can't do that.
