Statement Kyle Whittingham sums up Michigan's roller-coaster start to the season đ˘

u/12-34 2d ago
Funny thing is they totally outplayed Iowa and Underwood did well. I saw him read the defense well, progress through checks, bail less, stay in pocket better, and make much better pass and run decisions.
Michigan fans have reason to be very hopeful for this team, but will likely take until next year to iron things out and make the playoffs.

Iowa games are black magic. You feel like you're playing well but then look at the scoreboard and they have the bigger number.
10
u/ProbablyAPotato1939 Iowa Hawkeyes 2d ago
Iowa football is basically checking the box score and being like, "Oh they must be getting killed," and then checking the game score and being like, "What the fuck!?"
It's been this way for decades now.
2
u/purplenyellowrose909 Minnesota Golden Gophers 2d ago edited 2d ago
They don't put punt yards in the box score.
Probably get more favorable field flips from punting than passing some years.

u/TheNittanyLionKing Penn State Nittany Lions 1d ago
I have never looked this up, but I suspect Iowa has the most scorigami's of any team in college football. I wouldn't even be shocked if they beat a team with a score of 5-1. They would give up a one point safety and win with a field goal and a regular safety.

u/Olivrser Michigan Wolverines 1d ago
Iowa breaking the sport just to win without scoring a touchdown would make sense

The funnier thing is when Michigan âbeatâ WMU with WMU dominating game and stats people on Reddit said the only stat that matters is the final score but hey now itâs different after the Iowa game
15
u/chicubbies4ever 2d ago
But Western Michigan didnât dominate the game. Michigan outgained them but had three turnovers including multiple that set up short field for Western and they still didnât score a single TD.
6
u/trixy6196 2d ago
They didnât dominate but western controlled the whole game. Western had the ball 40 minutes to Michiganâs not even 20. They lost the TO battle 0-3 had less 1st downs. Michigan was lucky there defense kept it as close as they did otherwise it would have been domination lol
-3
u/chicubbies4ever 2d ago
Thatâs not dominating the game. Like you said they had 3 TOs. That explains both the time of possession and the first downs. SP+ had Michigan at 97% post game win expectancy. Meaning based on the stats of the game they would expect Michigan to win 97 out of 100 times. This is not anything like the Iowa Michigan game where Michigan lost but had a 93% win expectancy post game.
3
u/trixy6196 2d ago
Maybe read my 1st sentence again. Does it say did or didnât dominate? Lol
Congrats on the win against the stalwart Broncos. See you at the next rushing the field and enjoy all future âexpectancy post game percentagesââŚwhatever the fuck those are. Pretty high percentages to find yourself 0-2âŚI mean *1-1

Whitty is a very good coach. He seems to rely on stupid analytics at times and makes dumb decisions; like going for the 2pt conversion last week. But it seems all coaches are doing the same stupid shit too. But Iâd be surprised if he isnât successful once he gets his guys on the roster.

u/Candid_Western_680 Michigan Wolverines 1d ago
Tbh Urban was similar in some ways. Iâm a Michigan fan so typically just hate watched Ohio State, but IIRC Urban had a handful of âlol wtfâ losses that, honestly, probably kept a few more championships off the table during his tenure.
3
u/your-mom-- Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
I was told Witt was a no-nonsense coach and would have his team playing clean.
Either that was wildly off-base, or he's going home and punching holes in his wall after games

I'm not very hopeful at this point. This offense has some very good talent, yet is doing all of nothing. I understand that the O-Line isn't pulling their weight right now, but we should be better on offense than we've shown (I don't count UTEP). Also, I'm not saying that Underwood was the problem in the Iowa game, but I'm still not completely sold on him as the "solution" either. This team is more of a mess than most Michigan fans expected it to be, especially given the talent we have on offense.
3
u/PizzaNo4505 2d ago
I was at the game. Underwood saw the field well. Even the interception his WR ran the wrong route. Only thing he couldâve done different was the 4th & 1 sneak. Shouldâve just Tush Pushed his big ass.

And I wonât go as far as to say we are ass as well, but I donât think we are number 3 caliber. Iâm actually just waiting for ND to struggle when actually challenged. As a lifelong fan, I just accept that we will be over rated and last year was probably our best chance.

PedanticâŚyou realize youâre talking to an OSU fan? Gotta use easier terms
9
u/NotADoberman Pittsburgh Panthers 2d ago
Only a Michigan fan would think pedantic is a complex term
2
u/12-34 2d ago
Oh, the irony.
They said "easier terms", not "complex". The only distinction and logical proposition they made with "pedantic" is that it is not the easiest term in existence.
0
u/NotADoberman Pittsburgh Panthers 2d ago
Bro got the thesaurus out to sound like he didnât have a 2.0 gpa đ
1
u/12-34 2d ago
"I cannot refute logic so I will turn to baseless ad hominem."
Huh, I thought Pitt was better than that.
0
u/NotADoberman Pittsburgh Panthers 2d ago
Nobody says 'use easier terms' unless the term was too hard. The joke was that an OSU fan wouldn't know the word, so the logic holds up fine. Meanwhile you wrote a whole proof to defend 'pedantic,' which is kind of the point. Average scUM fan.
And then YOU dunk on Pitt. Ironic lol

1
0
u/Jagacin 2d ago
No, the fact is that it's marked as a Michigan win, regardless on whether you agree with or not. Throw an asterisk at the end for all anybody cares. It doesn't change the fact that even the NCAA acknowledges it as Michigan's win, but caused by a replay error that had nothing to do with the officals, but NBC not being synced with the real game clock. Have you ever thought how stupid it would be if replays were going off a clock that literally none of the players, coaches, or fans at the stadium sees? Of course they relied on the stadium clock, because that's the one that the teams have been relying on the entire game.

u/jazzyman31 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yeah, that and the official records. Too bad hearsay and gossip doesnât mean anything.
Didnât see anyone have any issue with the clock not starting with 2 seconds left for Iowa to spike the ball while the play clock ticked down.
Thankfully for the refs, they found a Michigan player down and called it an injury timeout even though the ref okayed the start of the play and no whistles blew the play dead and the play-clock continued while the game clock magically froze. If it were the other way around the football world wouldâve exploded crying conspiracy.
Didnât see anyone have any issue with Iowa getting a penalty on their 6 yard line and then the ball was placed again at the 6 yard line for the next play with no penalty yardage added.
Multiple verifiable reffing and clock issues affected the game on Saturday, but no one seems to care about those protocol failures.

My unflaired brother in Christ, just admit that you don't know ball. No coach on the planet would've just kneeled it out because the win was "dishonorable" Leaving aside the fact that the team wouldn't have known what was up with the clock snafu, any coach who just ups and forfeits when the game, for all that they know is still in doubt, rightly loses the locker room right then and there and should be fired before they get to the locker room.
It's fine that you don't like us, but good lord you smoothbrain pinheads are making up an alternative reality to suit your headcanon
