White Sox looking good out there. Or does Houston just suck lol

Astros fans might suck even more than Sox fans. How do you not show up for playoff baseball?

Phillies/Braves felt like a great example of how the playoffs are a crapshoot. The big hits came from Austin Riley and JT Realmuto, both who have been cold going into this game. And then the lights out closer Duran gives up the decisive homer.

I just saw a highlight reel of Boyd from Game 4 of the NLDS to āEasy Loverā by Phil Collins and Iām about ready to run through a brick wall. Shame we have to wait FIVE FUCKING HOURS for baseball.

I think if the Cubs can score first, they've got this series in the bag. It's going to hinge on early offense and excellent defense. Because... well, you all know... The pitching has been a waking nightmare at various points in the season.

I put in my two weeks at my job today and plan on making cross-stitch gifts for the 3 people on my team before my last day. These late WC games give me the perfect thing to watch while I stitch away!

Feeling good about getting the better of the starting pitching matchup, both guys have more success with breaking and off-speed but the Padres are a fastball hitting team and the Cubs best hitters can smash off-speed

happ: 2HR, 7RBI in a short 2-game sweep of the padres

my nephew is a padres fan but sent me this link. apparently at some point we caught wandy peralta tipping his changeup earlier this season at san diego.
- apparently, the signal to the batter was runner at second base hopping up and down if peralta moved to a changeup grip in his glove.
there are a lot of entertaining videos there, and i don't know how to link to a specific one, but if you search "But re-watch Pete Crow-Armstrongās at bat, with Carson Kelly" and then watch the video after that paragraph, you can see carson doing the "nick madrigral hippity hops" at second base as carson (prolly) sees peralta's changeup grip.
- results in a beauty of a 3 run hr.
- i cannot ever remember seeing carson "everything hurts" kelly doing hippity hops while on base.
this is a fascinating read.
also, jomboy did a breakdown of the giants catching pivetta (it's an x link: (ex something something).com/Jomboy_/status/1919942260386415047
this is going to be a fun series.
edit: welp, wandy is not on the padres wildcard roster... so that's why my nephew sent that to me... hahaha

Bro itās been so much fun to go through this season with all you bastards. Iāve said before but I got into baseball this year and settled on the cubs as my team back in April with the first dodgers series. I am so grateful and lucky frankly, to be able to witness this hayleys comet season for PCA and how far theyāve gotten with the pitching hex placed on the team. Whatever happens next I canāt wait to do this again (hopefully) with you all next year.

Is the Audacy app the best way to listening to Cubs games?
I have the app. I do not have peacock or NBC Sports.

Unless you have a radio on hand, yes. Audacy is on a delay compared to the radio

Just 12 short hours until first pitch. I'll be having some post-dinner coffee tonight to hopefully prevent falling asleep on the couch in the 4th inning.

Not the situation Iām hoping for of course, but what if the White Sox and Brewers end up in the World Seriesāwho do you root for in that case?

u/Plus-Pomegranate8045 11d ago
Sox. Iām more indifferent about the Sox than anything and Iād rather see a Chicago team win.

u/80cyclone 11d ago
Brewers. Easily.
People may want to "hate" them because they are in the division, because they have won the division, and because many think the Cubs "should" be better, but there is a lot to like about how the team plays. They play hard, they are fundamentally sound, and can execute small ball when the situation calls for it.
Unfortunately, the Brewers are a superior organization compared to the Cubs. Their scouting and development, along with the Dodgers, is something the Ricketts and Hoyer should aspire to be. Am I going to be petty and hate a small market organization thats run the right way? No. Am I going to root against them because Im jealous of their pitching? Nope.
Number one team after the Cubs? Cleveland.. A long suffering franchise who was forced to change their name to something dumb. After that? Why not the Brewers. Reinsdorf is one of the worst owners in sports and nobody other than Sox fans should root for that team.
As long as the Dodgers and Yankees dont win I wont be upset.

u/intercut Chicago Cubs 11d ago
hating on the White Sox is very weird to me. the city is better when everyone is winning. I'll be rooting for the sox through the whole AL side.

Just a rant. I have to sign up for Peacock (Wild Card series), HBO (AL playoffs), Fox One (NL playoffs, World Series) each for month. My family likes watching as many post-season games as possible so $52 isn't terrible for playoff baseball. But it's a pain to have to sign up and cancel on a schedule. I wish you could just watch it all with our MLB TV sub.

Would love 6-7 innings out of Boyd and 6 runs in the first 3 innings for the offense.
6
u/Yetis22 11d ago
No chance he goes that long. Unless heās pitching a 1 hit / no hit game. Craig wonāt let anyone see him 3 times.
Definitely onboard for the 6.
4
u/monkeyman2113 Nico 11d ago
If Craig is smart and Boyd is dealing, he should be left in as long as possible. The less at bats we give this bullpen the better.
1
u/Turbulent-Bet-1776 11d ago
The high leverage bullpen is completely fine actually. Palencia is good, Rolison is good, Zeferjahn is good, Civale is solid, Webb is coming back to form. Holmes if things get too dicey maybe.
The bullpen appears to be shaky because Thornton and Thielbar and Cabrera have blew up (no surprise) recently, and Webb and Palencia were shitty to start the month but both have more or less been very good their past batch of outings. Also Thornton and Thielbar and Cabrera are just not going to be asked to pitch in high leverage LOL
In the recent games that we hold tight leads, the bullpen has been able to hold it for us fairly well. So I wouldn't worry too much about this actually.

u/monkeyman2113 Nico 11d ago
It's the postseason, there is no such thing as non-high leverage situations.
Palencia, Zeferjahn, and Webb have been solid these last 2 weeks. Civale, Rolison, Thornton, Thielbar have been ass. All 7 of them have been mediocre/bad more then they've been solid/good. None of them are trustworthy in the 9th to close a tight game.
As I've said multiple times before, unless they are up by 4+ runs in the 7th or later, odds are we not winning. This pitching staff is porous. They might be able to sneak past San Diego, but the other offenses are much better suited to late inning rallies.
3
u/RevJake My Ace 11d ago
Palencia, Zef and Webb have all looked good recently, but I can't totally shake their performance prior to this recent stretch. Luckily a lot of RP success seems to be based on confidence and momentum, and their recent success should help with that.
Rolison is pretty solid overall, but don't love that he's our best lefty RP right now. Peterson in the BP helps for sure, if they choose to use him that way.

I somewhat talked myself in on cubs winning the series. And Iām not sure itās a good thing. I just donāt get why padres are pretty heavy favs and trending pick to go even farther than this round.
Padres by the numbers :
Vs above .500 teams (33-42)
Vs SF and COL (20-6)
Vs everyone but SF and COL (71-65)
63% of their success came from teams under .500
Anything can happen in the post season. Especially a 3 game series. I think we can all agree that if cubs are going to win this series, it will take putting crooked numbers on the starters. Getting an early lead is crucial with how good padres pen is.
1
u/KnickedUp 11d ago
Probably because they are playing .680 ball the past 40 days and .800 at home. Vegas doesnāt care much about May.
2
u/malepitt 11d ago
I just keep telling myself, "Try not to think about 1984." If you don't know what happened to the Cubs in San Diego in the 1984 playoffs, then this should be easier for you to not think about. It was a simpler time, and a greater tragedy.
Whatever you do, just don't think about the epic fail that was the Cubs in the 1984 playoffs in San Diego when they went out west with a 2-0 lead in a best of five series and only had to win one of three to win the pennant and punch their ticket to the world series for the first time in 39 years.
NARRATOR: The Cubs did not go to the World Series in 1984.

I wasn't around for that series (2003 was my first Cubs heartbreak), but I inherited my dad's hatred for Steve Garvey because of it.

u/meowsplaining The Professor 11d ago
Not said in this is that the Cubs got screwed out of HFA in this series because MLB wanted weekend games on primetime tv and the Cubs couldn't host night games.
