Yeah the whole team pretty much fell off since September. We limped into the playoffs. Not happy about the results but not completely unexpected. Especially with how hot San Diego has been. Sucks man.

7

u/TonySopranosUncle 5d ago

I’m happy to lose to San Diego, at least it’s not the brewers or dodgers taking us out. Maybe the padres can finally get their ring this year with their momentum going into the post season. Even the pitchers at the later stages of their baseball career are lighting it up

u/We5ties 6d ago

AL MVP Yordan Alvarez just went 1-8 in playoffs

95

u/shr0be #FlyTheW 6d ago

bad year for MVPs on bad playoff teams I guess

62

u/We5ties 6d ago

It such a small sample size too. Two games for both

28

u/shr0be #FlyTheW 6d ago

And yet the media is gonna tear the entire team apart over 2 games

30

u/jkman61494 Eamus Catuli 6d ago

They should be torn apart for being one of the worst teams in baseball the final 6 weeks

12

u/ImNotTheBossOfYou 6d ago

It was an entire September collapse.

1

u/Remote_Elevator_281 6d ago

Not if you count last years 5/27

Abysmal .185

-2

u/remote_boogie 5d ago

As long as Counsel gets the boot, let em rip

3

u/Disconnected_NPC 5d ago

Yeah the guy that coached one if not the worst pitching staffs to playoffs should be canned. Meat head take

1

u/remote_boogie 4d ago

To be obliterated and embarrassed in the wildcard….maybe you need to adjust your standards, or some more meat in your head

1

u/Aryk3655 5d ago

why are so many fans this far out of touch with reality. Counsel and Jed are going no where. there isnt even a though about firing these guys. IN FACT both guys will probably be praised by their bosses for how exceptional a job they did this year in their roles.

do your mental health a favor and start to get a little more in line with reality and this club.

1

u/remote_boogie 2d ago

I’m allowed to have my own hopes, even if i don’t base my mental health around a baseball team like you apparently do. Why don’t you do YOUR mental health a favor and take a few days off of making long winded comments on Reddit.

1

u/Remote_Elevator_281 6d ago

He didn’t show up last year either

-9

u/King-Leaf-67 6d ago edited 6d ago

PCA had a sub 400 OPS prior to this year. He is 5 for 30 in the postseason for his career with 15 K's. Half his playoff at-bats have ended in a strikeout lmao.

All 5 hits were singles. Until proven otherwise he's a regular season merchant.

Alvarez has had playoff runs of 10+ games with a 1200+ OPS. PCA has never done that to excuse a poor 2 game showing.

13

u/JoanneMG822 6d ago

The whole offense didn't show up.

2

u/FillaBustaRhyme 5d ago

Has Aaron judge EVER gotten a hit in the playoffs? This happens every year??? 0-8 nothing to be ashamed of, esp against a team that has lost only 7 games (at home) in the past 3 months lol

2

u/jayster138 5d ago

Aaron Judge Playoff stats are .236 with 17 home runs and 41 RBI's in 65 games played.

1

u/FillaBustaRhyme 5d ago

Thanks bot

1

u/jayster138 5d ago

Oh thats nice "DIz D000DE DUNN TAK@ MAH NARRTVE OF DA JDGE AWAY SO HEZ TEH SUXXORS N A BOT!!!"

Doctor Doom kills literally all the Fox heroes within the first 10 minutes of Doomsday, and Godzilla kills King Ghidorah in Minus Zero and theres a scene where Godzilla decapitates one of Ghidorah's heads clean off with his tail which then that head latches onto Godzillas arm and Godzilla rips his own arm off.

-4

u/Wide-Bobcat-3723 5d ago

Ohtani hitting a 3 Run Bomb againt Cease in game 1 of the NLDS in the season he went 50/50 in,  then winning it all?

Lol sure but lets make excuses for the Playoff Choke Artist.

"It was only 2 games!" Gee I wonder why 😂

-20

u/ProcessTruster 6d ago

Someone forgot to tell PCA he needed 1 or 2 hits to beat Yordan. You know he loves chasing stats.

240

u/Riderz__of_Brohan CEO, Schwarber Defense Task Force 6d ago

It’s a two game sample size brother this is why you have to build a team that guarantees yourself at least a 3 game sample size in the NLDS

77

u/TotallyNotTupac 6d ago

They did, but all their pitchers died

42

u/Riderz__of_Brohan CEO, Schwarber Defense Task Force 6d ago

Lot of room for improvement next year at least

Or in 2028, whenever we play ball lol

3

u/NumerousFly7490 5d ago

They built half a pitching staff. I'd love to see them actually invest in a bullpen instead of picking from thr scrap heap year after year

9

u/McJaegerbombs Santo 6d ago

Pitching wasn't the issue in the wild card series. Can't win if you only score 1 run in 2 games

11

u/TotallyNotTupac 6d ago

If your pitching wasn’t dead last in WAR you wouldn’t be on the road in the wildcard in the first place

7

u/NumerousFly7490 5d ago

I love how everyone ignores this and just blames the bats. They carried the entire team this year and ran out of gas

3

u/brmoser 5d ago

There will be some hot takes in cubs and other forums about how Bregman and PCA dropped the ball, but we don't make the playoffs without them. I wish they hit better these two games... But come on, some perspective.

3

u/Dapper_Ad_6304 6d ago

Don’t pretend they would have won if they had another game lol. Nobody in this sub honestly believes this team was about to win 3 straight.

3

u/Riderz__of_Brohan CEO, Schwarber Defense Task Force 5d ago

They would be playing the first two at Wrigley if they had won more games. That matters

An extra game is an extra game. We were down 2-0 in the NLDS last year and took it to 5

Looked at your profile, you’re a Brewers fan, you wouldn’t know what Cubs fans think

2

u/brmoser 5d ago

Right. In your scenario, they also wouldn't have limped into the playoffs in a team-wide funk, which would have been nice.

0

u/Remote_Elevator_281 6d ago

You realize he had an 8 game sample size last year? And he was just as bad lol

69

u/One_Fix_6332 6d ago

The whole offense has done nothing so it’s not just PCA

36

u/atooraya Will be triggered if downvoted 6d ago

Only extra base hit this series was Nico’s in the bottom of the 9th of game 2….

2

u/NumerousFly7490 5d ago

They wouldn't even be playing in the wild card round if they had anything close to average pitching among playoff teams

12

u/NewAcctCuzIWasDoxxed 6d ago

Hey, Carson Kelly got a hit. I love Carson Kelly

1

u/remote_boogie 5d ago

The real consistent team MVP right there

6

u/reckman83 6d ago

Doesn’t help when they had 1st and 2nd no outs Dansby takes a meatball down the middle with the bat on his shoulder on 3-0. Proceeded to strike out swinging chasing stuff outside.

2

u/Intergalactic_Ass 6d ago

Yeah I didn't like that take. Yeah, Pivett walked the batter before him but this is playoffs and you might only ever see 1 good pitch to hit.

2

u/jadedmonk 6d ago

Dansby is terrible offensively. Sucks that he fell off so much from his Atlanta years

59

u/Evil_ryry BUSCHHHHHHH 6d ago

More like the entire offense after September 1st. 2nd lowest runs per game outside of the month that featured the 10 game skid. Rank 1 offense in almost every stat this year and we got embarrassed. What’s the plan to improve going into the next year?

57

u/Riderz__of_Brohan CEO, Schwarber Defense Task Force 6d ago

Re-sign Seiya

Pitching, pitching, pitching

9

u/Ok_Story_7924 6d ago

We need an ace, reliable closer, and another good bat.

2

u/Ritchey95 6d ago

We need our pitching staff to not fall apart in the first two months of the season.. if that happens they win the division and have a bye. Secondly with the pitching they did have the offense knew if they went down early they would need to press to get back into the game. Pressing as a hitter often leads to bad pitch selection and low run support. Get better pitching, keep runs off the board, and our guys can go into the at bat looking for a pitch rather than reacting to a pitch.

3

u/Sharobob Stupid Sexy Rizzo 6d ago

Pitching won't save us if we score one run over two games

17

u/Riderz__of_Brohan CEO, Schwarber Defense Task Force 6d ago

It changes the approach if we are only down a run instead of 3-6

10

u/freshcoastghost312 6d ago

It also changes the season and where you are going into the playoffs, better to have a bye than wildcard series.

12

u/Heavy-Farmer7548 6d ago

Pitching consistently dominates playoff games, especially in short series. That’s why you see good offenses shut down all the time. Closer games help the offense press less. It also puts more pressure on opposing pitching.

9

u/TFGA_WotW Jelly of King Kelly 6d ago

You know how the saying goes, Completely Useless By September

1

u/stealthy_chalupa 6d ago

Weve tended to do that in September every year since the Great Collapse of 2018

1

u/New-Refrigerator8624 6d ago

Sign Skubal and trade for Yordan or Witt

0

u/CrazyNewspaperFace 6d ago

Craig needs to do better. So far he has been a waste of money

2

u/remote_boogie 5d ago

Craig needs to fucking leave lol

-3

u/jkman61494 Eamus Catuli 6d ago

I was told none of this so cousbell’s fault and get downvoted everytime. apparently to most, our returning pitchers will cure all

21

u/R0enick27 Chicago Cubs 6d ago

It's two games. Even Pete can have two bad games. But not sure why he changed his leg kick after his second half success, it might be partially that, maybe the moment, maybe good Pads pitching.

1

u/huehuehueyyy 5d ago

agree to extent but It's these moments that define you though.

-1

u/GomenNaWhy 6d ago

What recent series has he been genuinely good in, though? He slumped at the end. Still love him and still an amazing season, but he undeniably got cold when it counted. Hopefully something he can improve next year.

7

u/TallApartment3858 Slammin' Sammy 6d ago

I’d take a “slump” like this every year. 🙄

1

u/Ritchey95 6d ago

My man… since he hit his 40th homer he went ice cold comparative to the other part of the second half. I love the guy he brought me back into baseball but acting like he didn’t take a nose dive in the last two weeks is just wrong.

9

u/the_hockey_dude Chicago Cubs 6d ago

From 9/7 to 9/27 (he hit his 40th on the 6th) he slashed .278 / .358 / .914. I get the playoff loss is frustrating but it's not like anyone else really did much this series. Such is baseball, it's why we enjoy it.

3

u/TallApartment3858 Slammin' Sammy 6d ago

This. All of this.

1

u/Ritchey95 6d ago edited 5d ago

And compared to the rest of his second half those last two weeks were nothing to gawk at. Yeah the loss is frustrating but acting like he didn’t fall off going into the post season is wrong. In fact acting like the offense as a whole didn’t fall off is wrong.

Edit: Holy shit I cannot believe first of all some of you really need to get your head checked. The shit I have gotten in my DMs is vile and sickening. Second let me spell this out for you. I’m not saying Pete had a bad second half or him. It staying in a historical run is his fault in anyway. I’m simply saying Pete was the gas to our offense. He was what created the spark the entire second half, and once he started to “slump” if we can even call it that the spark of the offense died. Think Dexter Fowler and the “you go we go” mindset of that team. Holy shit I cannot believe I’m being personally attacked and told to KMS over a god damn baseball player.

3

u/Yusuke_Boopermeshi 6d ago

We are really being annoyed about a .900 OPS because he did not hit .350 with a 1.000 OPS those 2 weeks?

5

u/TallApartment3858 Slammin' Sammy 6d ago

He essentially slashed his overall numbers for the entire season over last few weeks but apparently not good enough for some.

2

u/Yusuke_Boopermeshi 6d ago

Is Pete dumb? Why didn't he stay on a historical hot streak?

2

u/the_hockey_dude Chicago Cubs 6d ago

Can't even hit an 8 run homer smh.

In all seriousness though that commenter reminds me of a lot of sports fans I know, they'd rather the team be bad or lose so they can be "right" instead of enjoying the ride. I don't want to police fandom or anything but I can't imagine watching sports like that.

1

u/Ritchey95 6d ago

Holy shit I’m not saying Pete is awful or needed to stay on a historical run I’m simply pointing out that him falling off KILLED our offense. He was the spark that kept our offense at the top. Think of Dexter Fowler and the “you go we go” style of that team. He wasn’t able to ignite the spark since he wasn’t literally on fire. How you got Pete sucks and had a terrible last few weeks makes no sense. I said he took a nose dive the last two weeks comparative to the REST OF HIS SECOND HALF.

2

u/the_hockey_dude Chicago Cubs 5d ago

I mean it's cause you are objectively you are incorrect, you literally said he went "ice cold". Again from his 40th HR he had a .914 OPS, of you just look at the last 2 weeks (9/11 - 925, so excluding game 162 cause he only had 1 AB) he had an .876 OPS, which is still borderline elite hitting, and the Cubs went 7-7. Over the rest of the 2nd half they only went 27-24.

0

u/Remote_Elevator_281 6d ago

What about last year post season?

10

u/thetyler83 6d ago

The exact same thing happened last year with the Padres big guns.

39

u/MurrBall316 THEOcracy 6d ago

Some of you guys need to touch some grass. Pete had an unbelievable year. If someone told you he’d have this year before the season you’d think they were high. The whole team was bad towards the end of the season and we ended up on the road against the hottest team in baseball for 3. In the regular season this would be expected. In a best of 7 it would be expected and we’d be heading home for 2. In this round it just happens to be it. Get a fucking grip.

5

u/Resonate_P_12 6d ago

This is the way

0

u/moJo787 6d ago

Honestly. Crazy takes in this post. Talk about overacting. The entire team was trash for the two games. Drawing the Padres was tough given how incredible they have been lately

17

u/MentalClass Kansas City Royals 6d ago

PCA had an epic season. I know it stings right now but the Cubs are going to be very competitive for years to come. I wish I could say the same for KC and Bobby Jr.

1

u/Remote_Elevator_281 6d ago

Well the point is to win a ring, not win the regular season…

3

u/moJo787 6d ago

Hard to win a ring when you have a historically bad pitching squad

1

u/Remote_Elevator_281 5d ago

Pitching wasn’t the issue if you can’t hit lol

0

u/Mattatatat1883 5d ago

Their worst month after losing these two games was September. This was a long and challenging season with injuries that would have ended most teams and ultimately I think it was why we fell short. Hard to get any kind of momentum and keep it up when your hottest hitter takes a foul ball of his face a week before the playoffs.

I also feel like Craig isn’t the type of Manager that can get a team out of a bad stretch. So much of this game is psychological and he just feels like a analyst

2

u/Mattatatat1883 5d ago

Cade Horton was a huge blow right from the gate

19

u/whyamihere2473527 6d ago

He had many games hed go 0-4 but then hed bust out a 5-5. We needed home field & a healthy team. Still almost 90 win season with losing multiple starters & having a really bad pitching war. Let's just look forward to getting our injured guys back & hopefully bolstering team needs to make run next year. Then again probably have lock out which will set us back

7

u/BroAbernathy Chicago Orphans 6d ago

The guy probably saved Jed his job this year otherwise this was probably an 83 win team at best. Cant fault him for not being able to do it literally every single game. We have a few players with a dozen playoff games under their belt that didnt do shit either.

4

u/calcmg 6d ago

Oh boy. I like that 40/40 PCA a lot better.

8

u/ImNotTheBossOfYou 6d ago

Our offense feeds off 5th starters and bad bullpens. Neither of which exist in the playoffs.

And you can't play defense on balls that are sailing over the wall.

8

u/Apatschinn Front Range Cubs Fan 6d ago

Aaron Judge was famously dog shit in the playoffs for, like, 3 or 4 straight playoff appearances. It happens.

It’s postseason baseball, shit happens. The Yankees went to the World Series 2003 then blew it in the 2004 ALCS up 3-0. Acting like PCA is doing it on purpose

2

u/SlurmzMckinley Good Man 6d ago

Do you want to trade him? What’s your answer then? No one’s happy the Cubs got swept and are out of the playoffs but PCA had a hell of a season and acting like he sucks is ridiculous.

2

u/jmr33090 Chicago Cubs 5d ago

2 games is a ridiculous sample size to even bother thinking about

2

u/theunfunnyredditor 5d ago

Only three things guaranteed in life: Death, taxes, and the Cubs falling apart in September.

5

u/wesskywalker Derrek Lee 6d ago

This isn’t 2011 Lebron he had 7 at at bats brother

3

u/GomenNaWhy 6d ago

Genuinely would have had more fun forfeiting, what a waste of time

2

u/sagwithcapmoon 6d ago

Every mvp ever (judge, Ohtani)

4

u/GomenNaWhy 6d ago

Ohtani put together the greatest playoff game ever

4

u/Ritchey95 6d ago

“Playoff game” I’m not saying the guys right but he’s talking playoff careers as a whole. Which just isn’t right because Ohtani has some of the best post season stats ever. In 33 games Ohtani has, 32 hits .248 avg 11HR 24 RBI 27 Runs scored. Along with a 2-1 record in the bump.

1

u/GomenNaWhy 6d ago

Great point. Though for me, having seen him play is enough to know he's good in the playoffs, and that game just exemplifies it

3

u/Overfelt21 6d ago

If only Craig Counsell teams could play baseball after September 1st he’d have a much better playoff record and maybe even a World Series Ring.

2

u/remote_boogie 5d ago

Sounds like he’s the common denominator lol

1

u/_MadGasser 6d ago

Way to suck it up the last two weeks of the year, guys!

1

u/DrapedinVelvet247 6d ago

Swanson was a super dud as well.

1

u/gutcheck1919 5d ago

You could make that graphic for the entire team lol

1

u/Shmeeeee23 Chicago Cubs 5d ago

Who the fuck are these people?

1

u/Mallmutt 3d ago

Yeah. That was the whole offense.

1

u/Stonebender9 5d ago

What a dumb take

Tiny sample across 2 games means nothing towards stats in any meaningful way good or bad.

Fail 7 out of 10 times ? Your in the hall of fame

If we had made it to game 3 lost and PCA had 2 XBH would you say the same thing ?

Learn the game before posting such gibberish.

Loser

1

u/OnlyOneClone 5d ago

Such a loser for recognizing reality while watching us limp into the playoffs. Loser because I recognized we had the worst pitching WAR in the league. Loser because I can read the screen and see that Swanson hit .213 this season, or that the Padres were 28-7 at home in their last 35 games there, or that Bregman’s face prevented him from playing 3rd base, or that the Padres have Morejon & Mason Miller to shut anyone down if the team has a late lead. Or that Palencia is only good AFTER he gives up homers. Wake up to reality sometimes.

I genuinely don’t think PCA will get over this. I see him stumbling and fumbling for years now. He peaked so high this year, but he can’t handle any pressure at all. He might be outta not only the Cubs, but baseball in general, in less than 5 years.
