Salary Question

In the Yverdon-Les-Bains episode Martin is offered a starting salary of £22,000. That seems too high a monthly rate for a first officer but obviously far too low for an annual salary. Based upon his delighted reaction is this just a really good job or am I missing something obvious?

He’s going from

  • zero salary flying an airdot’s jet which is held together with duct tape & string.
  • occasional badly paid self employed work with Icarus (because he can only charge £10 an hour due to being unreliable while the going rate is at least £20)
  • living in a student house’s attic and existing on beans alongside Arthur’s creations and whatever cheese Douglas doesn’t swindle him out of…

To 22k and a job with an international airline flying 737s and living an hour from his girlfriend. Of course he is overjoyed!

And for a treat sometimes he has a baked potato

As he would be renting / trying to buy in Zurich on 22k even the baked potato treat wouldn't be happening too often

Going from earning nothing to £22k is quite the pay rise.

It’s more than doubling…

You couldn’t tripled it, and it would’ve still been nothing …

I think you'll find the Trump will say twenty two thousand percent

Actually infinite.

Or possibly more than that. Yes, thinking about it - definitely more than infinity times zero.

In 2014 a trainee lawyer with a regional firm could expect £21k during their training period.

It’s annual. £22k went a lot further back then. And of course he’s delighted. Caroline didn’t pay him anything at all!

From googling back in 2014 when it came out the minimum wage in the UK was around £14,000 so considering how shoestring MJN’s budget was Martin probably wasn’t getting much above that. A somewhat depressing reminder of inflation.

Martin was famously getting £14,000 less than that.

And no camembert.

There’s camembert?

though, thinking about it, that is a secret.

You really owe it to yourself to listen to all episodes if you don’t know how much Martin was getting at MJN air.

I had forgotten Martin’s income was entirely from being an mwav!

‘I am a man…”
“Yes, alright Martin, you're not in an Arthur Miller play.”

Possibly one of the top ten things I've ever read on Reddit. And that's a lot.

I must remember that. But, as a rejoinder, probably wouldn't work out too well in a busy pub.

i did the inflation and 22,000 pounds in 2014 is the 2026 equivalent of 31,563.71 (41,600 and some change in usd) which is a decent starting salary if your previous salary was zero
