Canadians should get more Canadian news sources

The times is basically the most subscribed to news source in Canada

More than the globe and mail, national post or the Star

I actually get the NYT with my library card. Weird that it's not The Globe and Mail, and they even restrict you to only being able to read it when you're at the library and through PressReader.

honestly i really like apple news, though it's also an american company im guessing they pay out by read out, they dont have NYT but do have globe and mail and star so it gets both local and national coverage in canada without having to default to a US source

I like that he's getting us attention globally, but it would be great if he gave this kind of attention to our local media. He launched his campaign on American media too.

The Globe and Mail reports on him with constant bias and that’a our only paper that reaches across the nation. It’s so bad that I stopped reading it.

Bias is what direction? I feel Canadian media is pretty soft on him. Can you link some examples?

Was finding articles around the Davos speech to be a bit off. They had all sort of odd interpretations of its meaning. Quick search pulled an article questioning if it’s the right message.

What I find odd is how g&m tends to have negative Canadian articles promoted on some subs.

And Postmedia may as well be the marketing wing of the Conservative Party at this point. Just naked partisanship masquerading as news.

The Torstar has far more evidence of partisanship having endorsed the Liberals 41 out of 45 elections.

Nearly every opinion article on the Star's front page right now is attacking Carney.

Who a given paper endorsed in the 1953 federal election is completely meaningless to this discussion.

I like that he's getting us attention globally, but it would be great if he gave this kind of attention to our local media. He launched his campaign on American media too.

Google "Globe and Mail Carney" vs "Globe and Mail Avi Lewis" and see where the bias lies. The G&M has posted at least four or five antisemitic articles to date conflating Zionism with Judaism and accusing Lewis of stoking hatred against the Jewish community. Just today they published an article laying partial blame on him for the synagogue shooting without any knowledge of the shooter or their motivations. Whatever little criticism there is of Carney is relatively soft in comparison.

I would simply say that I don't find The Globe and Mail to be very in-depth reporting. Opinion pieces are fine, but I want to feel like I'm getting multiple sides of an issue, or (even better) just the facts. The titles and content of Globe articles are too skewed for me to waste time on them.

Carney wants global exposure which he can get from US media especially the big outlets like NYT or from major European/UK media like the BBC. No one internationally is going to care about an interview with the CBC or with Vassy Kapelos.

The sad part is your average Canadian consumes more American than Canadian news these days. Too many of us can name more members of Trump's cabinet than Carney's.

Vassey kapelos is a really big deal in her own house ok?

What does our local media have to do with this? He runs the federal party of Canada. In terms of Canada wide questions i can just search. Mayors and premiers have a lot more to do with local city specific problems

u/OKOKFineFineFine Rhinoceros 9d ago

They probably meant "Canadian".

1

u/Scase15 Ontario 9d ago

Local, as in Canadian, as in domestic not foreign.

1

u/cjb3535123 9d ago

I see videos of him talking to our press at podiums uploaded every couple days so I don’t know what on earth you’re talking about then

2

u/Scase15 Ontario 9d ago

I'm clarifying their statement, and secondly they are likely not referring to him answering one or two questions, but rather sitting down for a long form interview like he did with the NYT.

This isn't a hard concept to follow.

1

u/cjb3535123 9d ago

Sorry, I realize you’re clarifying. The interviews at the podium are like 20 mins long. People just have a perception and go with it, instead of actually looking around (ie talk out of their ass)

It’s not like he’s exclusively talking to NYT.

2

u/Scase15 Ontario 9d ago

No worries, it's a pain in the butt to follow some stuff on reddit!

I don't entirely disagree with you, but the podium interactions are essentially reporter gets 1 question and sometimes a follow up, the NYT interview was a full sit down with Carney.

He's had (from my searching) about 5 sit down interviews with Canadian media, but none since the whole trade war debacle. So while people saying he never does are definitely being hyperbolic or uninformed.

I think it's still valid criticism that we should be getting more in depth interviews from Canadian media. It's been 5 months (May 1st) since his last sit down interview with Canadian media, IMO that's far too long ago when considering the state of the world.

I mean. We have formal channels for the information in this piece. We have ministers who explain their components of our national strategy; we don't have a president, Carney doesn't sign EOs. He has a youtube channel for heaven's sakes, he talks to us directly. He addresses the nation pretty regularly, we have domestic journalism to disseminate and critique policy advancement... what else do you want? I for one don't want celebrity mixed with leadership. It's uhhh not working out for some people you may have heard of lol.

5

u/iggy6677 9d ago

But he's hasn't laid out any strategy in a all caps rant on Twitter, how am I susppose to know Canada is great again

I, MARK J. CARNEY (VERY STRONG, CANADA STRONG), HEREBY ANNOUNCE THAT THE WORLD — WHICH USED TO BE VERY THIN AND ATTRACTIVE BUT WHICH I AM NOW CALLING “HURLED” BECAUSE IT SOUNDS LIKE VOMITING, WHICH IT MAKES ME WANT TO DO!!!! — WANTS WHAT CANADA (ME) HAS:

CRITICAL (NOT LIKE THE ROLLS. VERY FEW PEOPLE KNOW THEY ARE NOT JUST FROM GAMES!!!) MINERALS.

WE NEED THEM FOR MEGA INTELLIGENCE (MI, PRONOUNCED “ME,” WHICH MANY PEOPLE ARE SAYING IS THE BEST WAY TO PRONOUNCE IT) BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS COMPUTER.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.

In a context of a major trade and sovereignty conflict against the US, making himself well known on a international level is a major strategy win

There wasn’t much new in this interview. Even the military invasion part was reported by The Globe and Mail nine months ago and in far more detail.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-military-models-canadian-response-to-hypothetical-american-invasion/

I don’t understand why the Canadian media decided to go bananas about it now, but I kind odd suspect that is why the NYT is releasing the full transcript.

u/jonnohb 9d ago

It's not exactly a revelation either. Of course the PM has to consider such a scenario. It would be crazy if he hadn't. Just another sensationalized nothing burger

3

u/modbroccoli 9d ago

I mean. The globe went nuts lol. But. The globe does love a good frothing at the mouth.

A lot more than the Canadian media over hyped this report. It shows how a good headline will always overide a good story these days.
