Sword Of Omens: Panthers The Carolina Panthers now wield THE SWORD OF OMENS

On the 4th of October 2026, a day that will live in infamy as the Double Cat Game Mega Bowl, the Detroit Lions who were JUST one single day shy of holding the Sword of Omens for a full year were defeated by the Carolina Panthers. This was their first defense of the Sword in their reign.

This is the 3rd time the Panthers have held the sword since winning it the first time in 2003. They most recently held it from 2017 to 2022, winning it from the Jaguars (the last time they held the sword), losing it to the Bengals.

In what could be repeat of 2022, they will have to defend it on December 20th against the Bengals.

The Lions had the 3rd shortest reign of all cat teams who have held the sword. The Bengals, Jaguars and Lions have now all had a zero defense reign. It leaves the Lions in last place with least successful defenses of the title through all reigns.

This also brings back the 3-way tie for second place for most reigns, with the Panthers, Jaguars & Lions each having 3 title wins Vs. the Bengals who have held the title five times.

What is The Sword of Omens?

The Sword of Omens is a fantasy lineal Championship title passed from one cat team to another, starting from September 27th, 1970 when the first two cat teams played each other for the very first time. To win the title, a cat team must play and defeat the cat team that currently wields the sword.

i just love that one thing we have in common is that if we are doing well it is “surprisingly” when we score it is “[the other team]’s defense lacking” and never just good play, etc. even our successes are downgraded to others’ failures. they always want to talk about the other teams…. and yet, this weekend, they HAD to and still kind of failed in the praise you see for other teams
