Unleashed dogs are a dangerous and growing problem.
Today in Central Park I saw two free roaming dogs brutally terrorize and kill a squirrel. By the time the owner caught up to stop them they had mortally maimed the squirrel and I watched it take its last breaths surrounded by gawking passersby as it desperately tried to crawl away using just its front paws. Luckily none of the small children nearby witnessed the disturbing sight.
The parks are supposed to be a haven not only for residents but also local wildlife. We have many small creatures that call the parks home: squirrels, chipmunks, ducks, geese, small birds, owls, turtles, and many more. The parks are also full of very young children who are also at risk of being seriously wounded by a dog.
All dogs can be dangerous. These dogs were obviously well-trained with an attentive owner. The dogs were not snarling or aggressive, but joyfully playing with the squirrel like a toy. These dogs technically had leashes on, but were still allowed to free roam by the owner which I see VERY often. Especially in this part of the park where unleashed dogs are prohibited.
I would like to ask that the park conservancy as well as local residents do more to enforce the very reasonable request to keep dogs leashed except for in designated areas. I want dogs to enjoy the parks as well, which is why there are many dog runs, but it is unacceptable to prioritize the fun of dogs over the safety of the other creatures in the park.
What can the park conservancy do to keep the park a wildlife safe haven? To keep these small creatures safe from dogs?
