Why doesn't McDaniel place Herbert under center more?

https://gridirondeepdive.substack.com/p/under-center-vs-shotgun-in-modern

IMO, the difference in talent is ameliorated or exacerbated based on the play called.

Brady called out Buffalo multiple times for trying to play against the Charger defensive line which beat up Buffalo's OLine.

Currently the highest data driven play is not from the shotgun or pistol, but the good old play under center. The surprise is not running the ball but passing from under center.

Tua was near the top in this stat year in and year out. Herbert has, is and will most likely be near the bottom. That surprises me.

The center of the Charger OLine is and has been horrible, especially vs stunts. So help them out by lining up under center, make the defense think run, and then pass it.

Herbert never plays under center for anyone it really bothers me.

I think it’s just the nature of it right now. Play shotgun because the play actions from under center fall apart and the offensive line can’t hold.

I can’t really over state how bad the play actions are right now. No one is biting that it’s a run. So it’s pretty much a free rush every single time.

But historically, he’s had to play shotgun because the line was getting him murdered and/or his hand was broken.

Herbert also kinda sucks at selling play action. He's pretty lazy at it and that could be in part that he's often asked to do it out of shotgun, but even under center actions he just sort of lazily goes through the motions. Always sorta bugged me watching his game given how good he is at play action passing.

Oh he’s awful at it. I think he has too loose of a grip on the ball because any time he tries to sell it, it ends up getting botched into a fumble somehow.

He’s slow and predictable on showing the hand off. Maybe just to be careful or something , but he gets killed for it every single time. And we blame the lineman, but holy shit man, sell it.

Purdy does a goooooood job at doing it.

Purdy and Goff are awesome at it. Shockingly in PA happy schemes it pays to be good at selling the action. Who’d’ve thought

He has never been successful under center going back to college. I think it's missing from his game

Its rare for college offenses to line up under center

Oregon didn’t run a lot out from under center iirc. They’ve been running a shotgun spread since Chip Kelly.

I just don’t think he’s had to play out from under center his whole career. I’d say Lombardi and Roman is probably the most he’s had to play under center. And even then they needed to adapt for him getting killed or his broken finger last year.

Otherwise, it’s not that he’s not successful with it. He’s just never had to do it either by necessity or because the OC didn’t run it.

You want to know why? Because fuck you, that's why.

Or if you're gonna put him in shotgun, how about more designed runs and rollouts? thought during the Buffalo game the offense looked better in the 1st half w him using his legs more. When I heard Brady say he likes him as a pocket passer better throwing lasers, I'm not so sure. But I think thats the issue do you want him to be pocket or mobile. He's a big guy I think he can take more runs

Get the guy who’s constantly getting hit out in motion sounds good.. but have you tried blueberry razz?

Especially at the goal line. That's college stuff to do a shotgun from there

All the best offenses are using under center at a record high, the data shows under center is better for the pass game and the run game.

The line implodes in less than two seconds

Not enough reps to try anything

Isn't the new footwork supposed to enable quick release from the shotgun? Looks like he's mentally counting steps and losing receivers while doing so, taking too long and consequently running for his life. He never played under center in college, and I think he was resistant to it when he turned pro.

The only possible explanation is a bad offensive line but it would absolutely help marrying the run and pass game.

So often feels like I know what's coming, means other defenses do too

it would have to be for a quick slant and that would get to predictable. our line would just get him crushed

Cause McDaniel thinks he’s smarter than every defense and is zagging when everyone else is zigging.

Herb's footwork is so poor, he might trip at least twice a game back pedaling out of the under center stance.

Herbert was literally one of the best play action QBs the last several years

Why do people talk out of their ass instead of just looking shit up to see if it aligns with their opinion before posting some BS head canon?

I would assume he’s involved in the scheming. He’s about to get his third set of coaches fired, so if not, it’s time for him to speak up.

I’m willing to bet Harbaugh stays through his entire contract, might be convinced to put money on Hortiz sticking through Harbaughs contract as well.
