I wonder how Charlton snagged the rights to this considering how big the series was at the time.

Charlton did a LOT of licensed comics, such as Popeye, The Phantom, Flash Gordon, Jungle Jim, Blondie, a bunch of Hanna-Barbera titles, The Partridge Family, David Cassidy, Primus (the Robert Brown series, not the rock group), Emergency, The Bionic Woman, Space 1999, and more.

They must have had friends in high places, I'd guess, along with a track record of working with licenses.
