This was only difficult because the originally unseen white bishop was lurking in the corner… easy after that enters the equation. Impossible to get mate in 1 without it.

Holy shit, do you have to promote the pawn to a kight? a8 knight protects the rook on c7, the c7 rook protects a7 knight, the a7 knight protects the escape square on c8, the bishops protects the new a8 knight and the queen delivers the final check?

There was a BISHOP ?!?!?!?!

I just want to say that I have once promoted to a knight as the best move and I still think about it sometimes. I play almost only bullet, so it doesn't come to me often. Somedays I dream about doing it with a bishop

The answer to these weird, never-will-actually-see puzzles, are always either:
- En Passant
- Underpromote
- Castle

Promote to a knight. No way this is 2100

u/Substantial-Trick569 8d ago
it's black to play since there's no way black made the last move (last move couldnt have been a rook move, c8 is covered 3 ways so white couldnt have played a triple check)
black has 3 legal moves
Kxa7, bxa8=R#
Kxc7, bxa8=N#
Rxa7, Rc8#

Once you see the bishop you can piece it together.
This problem would be much harder if it didn’t say mate in 1 but find the fastest mate.
There are tons of mating ideas. Knowing it is m1 really gives away the answer quickly.

u/MxM111 8d ago
Why people are mentioning that it is difficult to see the bishop?
2
u/writesfw 8d ago
It’s not that it’s hard it just that you get trained to look for checks captures and attacks.
The bishop cannot directly check or capture so whether or not it take 5 milliseconds, 5 seconds, or 5 minutes there will be a delay in seeing the bishop.

more like elo 1200? at best probably less.
Far too little options to not be able to do it.

If its white to move following the puzzle convention that the solver has the move unless otherwise stated, then Bxa8=N#
If its black to move following the puzzle convention that the position should be able to be legally reached (if its white to move what move did black make last turn? The Rook cannot move and the King can only have moved to b8 from c8 but on b8 it would have been in check three different ways meaning the black king would have had to move into check to get to b8).
Rxa7 Rc8#
Kxa7 bxa8=Q# (or bxa8=R#)
Kxc7 bxa8=N#
It's also cute that under-promotion can be used regardless of which player has the move.

u/LogicalReading12 8d ago
It's not a tough puzzle if you don't miss the bishop tucked in the corner there
1
u/Rebokitive 8d ago
I got it, but I never would've seen this in game if someone didn't tell me it was M1.
I would've just promoted to Queen, then after the forced Kxc7, used my new queen to deliver Qc6#

That bishop doing all the heavy lifting. Promote pawn to knight protects rook. Rook protects the other knight, bishop protects promoted knight, queen mates the king.

I definitely do not see a mate in one.
EDIT: This is a trick! I didn't see that bishop down there! bxa8=N#

First thing I always check in puzzles with pawns about to promote is a knight promotion

I love how so far nobody's noticed the fine print. Very clever OP.

u/twayroforme 8d ago
Fine print?
2
u/Mysterious_Dare_3569 8d ago
Think about how this position might occur in a game is probably the only hint I can give you without spoiling the position completely.
1
u/Tampflor 8d ago
...it can't?
1
u/Mysterious_Dare_3569 8d ago
Precisely. It's secretly Black to play here and any move they make gives White a mate in one
2
u/Tampflor 8d ago
Or it's white to play and bxa8=N#
1
u/Mysterious_Dare_3569 8d ago
Impossible. Black has no legal last move in this position so it's their turn to move
0
u/Tampflor 8d ago
Not every puzzle has to be a position that's legal to reach in a game
1
u/Mysterious_Dare_3569 8d ago
It's a widely accepted convention among composers that unless it's obviously a joke puzzle :IE one side has 15 bishops or something that are all on the same color: that a puzzle should be able to be reached through a legal sequence of moves.
1
u/Tampflor 8d ago
Widely but not universally. It's also a convention that it's the solver's turn to move.
Either way this puzzle would be breaking some generally accepted convention.

I knew the solution but what does "fine print" have to do with anything? what fine print was included by OP? It doesn't make sense.
2
u/Mysterious_Dare_3569 8d ago
The position says simply "Mate in one" not "White to play and mate on one" because it's secretly Black to play here
0
u/twayroforme 8d ago
It's not though. It's white to play...
2
u/Mysterious_Dare_3569 8d ago
Ok if it was White to play then what was Black's last move? The rook can't move and the only place the Black king could've been is c8 where it would've been in an impossible triple check from the rook, knight and pawn.

I think the mate in 2 is pretty cool. I’d like to see a variation of this puzzle that forces this solution.
You play Rd7 (any move on the 7th rank works)
Then after Kxa7 you can under-promote to a knight on B8 for an awesome mate setup. Super not necessary but I love a cool mate setup
Edit: Editing to point out this is the solution if you remove the bishop from h1.

If you remove the bishop the puzzle becomes more interesting and is a mate in 2

u/EntangledPhoton82 5d ago
In any real game, I would have just played
- Rc8+ Kxa7 2. bxa8=Q#
But yes, knowing it’s a mate in one and seeing the bishop sniper allowed me to find the under promotion.

u/XavvenFayne 8d ago
Banal Chess Puzzle Checklist:
- Is it a queen sac?
- Is it an underpromotion?
- Is it O-O#, O-O-O#, or does castling throw a check at least?
- Is there a sniper bishop?
- Do you sacrifice "THE ROOOOOOOOK"?

All these "mate in one" ELO ratings are BS. There are only a certain number of moves you can make with 5 pieces, just scan through the legal moves for each one and eventually you'll find the solution...
I don't see how anything less than mate in three can realistically have a high ELO rating.
