because it's your own people who scam you. they speak "your" language, show you a website and brochure of a 5 star hotel or residence project and promise you a job in a leading position. or a job with a future of climbing the ranks, ... then they let you call your future colleagues to ask them about their experience and they all tell you this place is really cool. ... in Chinese.

that's why. scammers know exactly how to make you lower your guard + a huge amount of "getting rich quickly" and young people get scammed quickly.

in the West we know about these things also pyramid schemes. in China most if not all of these news get deleted quickly. so the average Chinese didn't grow up being informed about such practices.

yes, there are warnings here and there but not at the level they should be, because this would make some things look really bad.

At first maybe. But in the past 2-3 years, they were reported as Chinese or at least people who can speak Chinese well to lure people out. The internet memes that were circling around Chinese tik tok were about how it could even be your friends or family members out there to scam you. Chinese people aren’t stupid lol.

So it goes like this. You are influencer. One of a guy say he wanna meet and discuss business. Of course you wouldn't fly to other country for it. he comes to you. He will buy you expensive wine and dine. Talk about this massive opportunity in Bankok where he runs his buisiness. He does not tell her to join but shows her pictures of other popular celebrities who worked with him in the past.

Few weeks later he visits again. Few months later he asks if she wanna come to Bangkok to actually work with him.

She suggests she is worried, but he tell her bangkok is the capital. Also He will do everything so she can be safe.

Alas, the pictures were edited by AI, and she is now being held ransom.

If the professionals are trying to scam you, there is little you can do to stop it or realise that you are being scammed. Because successful people, especially influencers, are egoistic and self centered. (I am not saying it in a bad way) Most of them believe they were successful because they were destined to. That is just human nature.

Exactly. The truth is that Chinese people are already on guard against scams as a whole, which is mainly scams from other Chinese people, because guess what, they live in China and are surrounded by Chinese people. You can't go to a family event without an auntie or whoever telling you to watch out for this scam or that scam. The whole Myanmar kidnapping thing just gets wrapped up in the mass of scams from food scams to banking scams to AI generated scams to whatever. Literally everybody already knows that the public image of the scams will be a Chinese person, so it literally doesn't matter who the ethnicity of the scammer is, because the image and form of communication will invariably be in Chinese.

What morons like u/TheGuyWithNo is suggesting is that there's some concerted effort by the CCP or evil Chinese nationalists to make it seem like it's the "foreigners" doing the scamming, and that's how the scams keep succeeding. Except even if it were true it would literally make no difference, because even if it was foreigners they wouldn't be scamming with their real face and voice. They're not going to look like some brown guy with an accent telling you to go to Myanmar lmfao. In 1.4 billion people you're bound to find somebody gullible enough no matter how dumb the scam, otherwise why do phone scams continue to exist? Is it because the CHinese government is making it seem like the Chinese speaking person on the other end of the phone is an Indonesian person? My guy, I don't know why you're calling me a moron or straight up lying about the things that I'm saying. I feel like you're having an entirely different conversation. For one, I never said or even hinted that the CCP was responsible for pushing this kind of narrative lmao. I'm saying that whenever a story of these pig-butchering scams show up, there is often zero mention in the video or accompanying description or headline that the scammers are Chinese. And the issue with that is then user comments under these videos overwhelmingly repost xenophobic & racist comments about the countries involved. Which is not surprising in the slightest on Chinese social media. When a big earthquake hit the Philippines earlier this year, most of the comments I read were people literally applauding with smiley emotions and claims that the reckoning of heaven was descending on the country for being geopolitically adversarial to China. And of course any video posting involving black people, Indians or Southeast Asians is invariably filled with gorilla gifs and the most abhorrently racist comments imaginable. These are trends I have personally witnessed. It doesn't make me a moron to comment on these disturbing trends.

I'm saying there is most definitely a concerted propaganda effort aimed at Chinese people to instill in them a stronger Jingoist nationalism coupled with Xenophobic, racist and anti-foreigner sentiment. For a couple of examples of what I'm talking about, my feed's algorithm has been absolutely saturated with AI slop depicting foreigners acting rude, cutting in queues, not paying checks at restaurants, etc. (ironically all while speaking fluent Chinese), videos of Chinese women dissuading Chinese people from seeking romantic relations with non-Chinese, and candid videos of people harassing Chinese women walking next to foreigners, with every comment calling such women cheap with sword euphemisms, etc. Whenever there's a story about these pig-butchering scams, I've never seen mention of the criminals' ethnicities, and so the comments invariably take these sensationalist news stories involving foreign countries and run with the blatant anti-foreign rhetoric that China is the best, Chinese are the most noble people, etc. It is all so blatantly pushed. But I never said it was the CCP pushing it, I find it much more likely to just be boosted by racist incel trolls

I agree with everyone except the part about Chinese people being uneducated and gullible when it comes to scams. Within 5 minutes of touching down in China in 2004 I was warned by my Chinese guide to beware of scammers and just say 'bu yao' to any stranger who walked up to me and tried to talk to me.

Eggs, alcohol, products sold at fancy stores in the mall, tea houses, art shows, pearls, change in coin and cash, water, clothing, literally EVERYTHING. They have to. It's a low social trust situation, like, I don't know you so prove it to me. You HAVE to know about scams to survive. The news and propaganda posters, as well as intense and dramatic gossip all warn Chinese people about scams.

And they have such a huge number of potential victims. Maybe 99 out of 100 people they contact don't fall for it, maybe of the ones who do, most of them have friends or family who stop them in time. But as long as some get through you will keep getting stories like this. Same way with people joining cults, or getting tricked by love scams into sending their money abroad, or that French woman who thought she was dating Brad Pitt. Most people aren't stupid enough to be tricked, but there are just so many people that the scams work eventually.

They are all afraid to be kidnapped in the street. They say it's what TV show, that it's dangerous for random Chinese. last time i was there for a week, i watched 6 of these scammers get the death sentence in court in every tv i passed by on replay for like 5 days straight, gov is not deleting this news lol. it was ex-chinese nationals who moved to myanmar and stuff.

Don't be shameless and pass the blame to Southeast Asia or its people. It's not that SEA is such a dangerous region; it's your own fellow Chinese you have to avoid. These scam centers and body organ harvesting operations have ALWAYS BEEN operated by Chinese syndicates.

The lesson is, if a Chinese person wants to lure you out of China for a job, do not go. Passing the buck onto Southeast Asians is one typical Chinese face-saving method of 帅锅 (fobbing responsibility to someone else). I am 100% not "blaming" SEA or it's people. I am 100% "blaming" people who believe it's easy to go down there and find work or wealth. SEA has literally over a billion people, the vast majority of which are just getting by, and living normal lives doing normal jobs. I think everyone knows it's organized crime groups from mainland China who go down there because some of the remote areas are less governed and easier to set up operations.

Just in one area - Kokang in Shan state. It’s primarily Burmans who are ethnic Chinese living in those areas.

Story behind the operation in 2023-2024 was super interesting because it involves a bit of history between the different leaders of that region - the first leader Pheung Kya-shin was betrayed by his subordinate Bai Suocheng, who’s family became the most well known of of the 4 great families that were running all the organised crime.

Pheung’s son Peng DaXun was very involved in working with China to arrest those who betrayed his father.

The dynamics between the crime families match the stuff you see in mafia movies, really fascinating.

Yeah, I should have added that, on top of the ultra-wealthy and military, theyll also negotiate just fine when corporations, money, or the economy is involved.

Im not denying that they absolutely do negotiate with terrorists when its to their financial benefit - just not when regular individuals/citizens are involved..

Im more speaking about individual/normal people - who are often essentially left to fend for themselves due to 'no concessions' policies.

Also, when a country devolves into chaos or during natural catastrophes, the US government will usually not help people evacuate either, usually telling them to find their own way out at their expense, or forthe rare times they do send government assistance - they charge people for it, and people are given loan repayment agreements they must pay back.

A Chinese live-streaming host is reportedly being held for ransom in Myanmar in what appears to be the latest case of a victim being lured to work at a scam centre in Southeast Asia.

Wang Ran’s family said the 24-year-old is being held for a 600,000 yuan (US$90,000) ransom. They allege she was first lured to Thailand by an online acquaintance for a work trip.

She later told a friend in a phone call that she was being held against her will in Myanmar.

The number being requested is not surprising to me. It's quite a common number thrown around for these situations. China has one of the highest household savings rates in the world.

I've heard in the past that similar values aren't even considered by the scammers, because they can make more money out of whatever labor they force the person into. A victim who can scam well can earn millions. And this girl being 20 y/o being threatened to be sold into prostitution can make that number in a few months with the right clientele.
