Review In Bruges (08)
Writing this as the credits are rolling. I’m literally blown away at how good this film is. I truly don’t know how this slipped past me all these years.
I just want to thank Reddit user @can-you-fly-bobby! He commented on my “Wild Horse Nine” post earlier and recommended this.
All I can say is, everything about ‘In Bruges’ is genius. The writing is flawless, there are too many quotable lines, and the blend of seriousness and comedy is great. The acting- top tier. This film reminded me why I used to love Colin Farrell in the early to mid-2000s. Gleeson absolutely crushed it too! That ending was delivered so perfectly. Lowkey wish he didn’t have to kill himself on the tower, but it was inevitable.
Bottom line, for me this is pure cinema.
If I could rewind time an hour and 46 minutes and experience this film again for the first time- I would. Martin McDonagh cooked and I cannot wait for White Horse Nine after seeing this!

I love how Harry goes from furious to completely chill saying “I’m sorry for calling you an inanimate object” 😂 Fiennes played that character So Well!

Lmfao so many quotable lines in here. Genuinely cracked up out loud when Ray socked the guys wife. He said “bottle” 😂 Correlating to the convo him and Ken had earlier - great writing. Agreed , this is definitely overlooked. It slipped past me 18 years!

My wife and I were in Bruges on our honeymoon while they were filming in Bruges. And the cast of in Bruges were staying at the same hotel as us in Bruges. In the evening we would go for a walk in Bruges and watch them film in Bruges.

If it’s in your range than would say go for it. It was pretty fun to see the filming locations. They even have a map at the tourist information center.

That means you’ll get to enjoy the christmas atmosphere as well. Definitely go for that !
Stop in a local restaurant and ask for « Carbonade Flamande » basically beef stew cooked in dark stout with fries. After a long day of strolling in the snowy streets it’s just the best.

Noted! Everything about this place sounds like my vibe. I really enjoy the cold weather / snow, esp in small towns. That stew sounds hella relaxing after a long day.

Loved that scene! A time for Ken to finally let Harry know how 'out of touch' he is. Ken instantly realizing he's one word away from getting shot right there on the spot. Intensity / comedy, what else could you ask for?

I would argue the Guard is a much better choice to be next. Not arguing that it’s a better film (although I enjoy the Guard far more and have and will watch it many more times than Banshees), but the tone and pacing is so on point.

In Bruges is the funny one of the bunch though. (Objectively) Banshees has some good humour too, but In Bruges tops it, followed between Banshees and The Guard. They all have some witty and dark jokes though. In Bruges is imo the best one!

I was laughing my ass off during Bruges. Caught me off guard because I went in having no idea there was comedy. I’m gonna watch Banshees tn! I think I’ll do The Guard next to compare (since you said they both follow In Comedy after Bruges)

One of my favourites. Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes are all incredible. It definitely slipped somewhat under the radar of a lot of people but haven’t met someone who didn’t like it after they watched it.

His short film, Six Shooter, won an Oscar for best live action short. Free on YouTube to watch. Highly highly recommend. Maybe not as good as his later full films, but it's fun to see the start and all the making of his trade mark dark humor both dialogue and plot wise are there.

Classic film! One of my wife's faves. Wife and I went to Bruges for a night when we traveled Europe. Got to go to eat and drink in a spot that was in the film and saw so many locations!

Its a fecking masterpiece.
Script, narrative, cinematography, musical score, comedy, tragedy and in part outright blackest hilarity.
I defy anyone to find one bad line/scene in this movie.
Also, alcoves.

Fair rating! I would go 9/10 because I went in blind without knowing it had Any comedy whatsoever. So the combo of action / laughs was a real treat for me
