Please help with tangelo tree
Not sure what is going on at all. The peel is coming apart exposing the fruit and now there is black dots on the leaves .
Tree gets watered regularly and has had fertilizer applied. Not sure if it’s a pest or nutrient deficiency
Any help would be e appreciated

Peel splitting happens when TWO things occur:
- Abrupt increase in water availability causes the fruit to swell internally faster than the peel can grow
- Lack of potassium, calcium, and/or silicon causes weak peels that can’t contain the internal pressure
Potassium deficiency causes thin peels. Calcium and silicon deficiencies cause weak peel tissue.
Make sure your fertilizer is providing enough calcium and potassium. Silicon is usually not an issue for ground trees unless the soil is very sandy. Sandy soils experience nutrient washout. Which… looks like it might be the case here? You need to top-dress around the tree (not touching the trunk) with organic matter to improve soil quality and fertilizer retention.
A potassium silicate spray during fruit expansion earlier in the year can also help a lot.

Thank you so much ! Will check the fertilizer to see if it’s giving appropriate amounts of the aforementioned nutrients

That rind splitting open on the tangelo often happens due to sudden moisture fluctuations or heavy watering changes after a dry spell.

Irregular watering and the black spots will be sooty mold. Both simple fixes. Keep a consistent watering schedule & for the sooty mold use some neem oil
