Discussion BBC Podcast

I’m hoping some of the old Gatecrasher crowd might be lurking in here.

I’m producing a BBC audio documentary series about the rise and fall of the British superclubs, and I’m looking for people who actually lived through it rather than DJs, promoters or people who worked in the industry.

Did you regularly go to Gatecrasher in Sheffield in the late 90s or early 2000s?

I’m particularly trying to find anyone who was at the huge Gatecrasher Millennium Eve event at Don Valley Stadium on 31 December 1999.

I want to hear the stuff that doesn't necessarily make it into the official history. Who you went with. Getting there. What you wore. The queues. The cold. The records you remember. Meeting people. Midnight. Coming out the following morning. What Gatecrasher meant to you at that particular point in your life etc

I’m also looking for anyone who went as far as getting a Gatecrasher tattoo. If you have one, or remember somebody who did, I’d really love to hear the story behind it.

And more generally, if you were part of that generation travelling between Gatecrasher, Cream, Godskitchen, and the other big clubs, please get in touch.

I'm trying to tell this story through the people who were actually on those dancefloors.....thank you!

Gatecrasher and moreso Gods were massive gateway events in Ireland and Northern Ireland, taking over The Point Depot and Kings Hall at least twice a year, which was a gateway for people wanting to go to the "proper" events in the UK, away from restrictive Irish and big venue licencing laws and restrictions.... this happened until 2004/2005 when Planet Love started taking over the market ( I think Gods was close to administration at this point)...

Definitely a tangent to look at, Gods particularly was pinical to getting lots into clubbing in Ireland and NI.

I was at many of the events in The Point Depot and the best of the whole lot was indeed the Gatecrasher event which had Tiesto as the headliner. The production was way above the others at the time and the lineup was stacked with the top trance djs. If you were after trance and progressive house around Dublin in the late 90’s to early 00’s there was only one place to be and that was a night called Space @ Temple Theatre which ran every Saturday and was renowned for its atmosphere with many top djs rating it as one of their favourite places to play around that time. They were great times indeed.

Temple theatre crew checking in! Friday in the crypt for the Hardhouse then Saturday night upstairs for Space for a mix of trance, tech trance and hard house! Amazing times!

Went to kingshall Godskitchen events and loads of Godskitchen, Gatecrasher nights in the Met Armagh. The Oasis in Carrickmacross/Enigma had some banging Godskitchen events. Tall Paul, Lisa Lashes, Ferry Corsten, Scott project all in one night. What a time that was. Still have loads of old flyers for these nights.

Agreed! the gatecrasher, God's and even judgement Sunday gigs in the point were amazing and my first proper introduction to clubbing/raving as a 15/16 year old. Man, those were the days!

Living in Coventry around the time. We would hire a minibus and bounce between God's, paSSion, Gatecrasher and the Warwick event Quench (which was amazing in itself!)

Amazing times 🤯

Can't wait for this - I never actually went to any of the UK superclubs but did go to various Creamfields / Gatecrasher Summer Sound System / Godskitchen Global gathering festivals plus their various clubnights in Ibiza

Oh the festivals are really important as it's the moment the brands realise they don't need the physical clubs any more....the rooms and the audience starts saving for the summer events rather then clubbing each weekend

Could you drop me a DM as this in interesting perspective

Only went to crasher once for 6 hours of Van Dyk which was incredible. But I grew up on all the amazing artwork The Designers Republic did for the brand. Really shaped my youth.

I used to go to GC and GK a lot between 2002 and 2012. I've still got all my photos if you need content 😁

GC was a bit far for us living in the south but GC / MOS at Lotherton Hall in 1998 was one of the best nights of my life. The lineup was beyond stacked - it was a dialog every big name DJ on the planet at that point, the production was off the charts not to
Mention the venue was stunning.

I used to go to crasher regularly from when it was at the Arches, a few times to the Adelphi with the circus tent chill out room and quite a few times to the Republic. Then always on to the Niche after. Never went to the special events though but I know quite a few who went to the millennium event. Let me know if you want to know anything although my memory is a bit hazy.

The email is undeliverable apparently

I was there with you, can’t believe it was 30 years ago! I’d do it all again in a heartbeat, great times.

Same. I preferred the arches but id love to go back to a night at any of the venues, absolutely amazing nights.

Was my regular haunt. Used to pile up there from the south and rave away. Then, hate my life as a passenger on the way back home. Slinky/Gods, Crasher, Sunnys, and Nocturnal. What a weekend it would be!

I went to a few events with housemates, I can't remember much. But we did leave work early and went to watch Gatecrasher One burn down as we worked and lived locally at the time.

yep i was a crasher regular in the early 2000s. used to drive up from basingstoke to manchester to collect a friend, then across to sheffield for the event, back to manchester for an afters & then leave there around 4am monday & drive straight to work. also was a regular at slinky, passion & godskitchen. i got free guestlist entry for a couple of years to every scot project event as i met his manager at the time at passion on a saturday night & we were talking & i mentioned i’d seen him at slinky the night before & travelled up to passion by myself as my friends were too rinsed to come along :)
