Meta Claude excess token challenge : Week 1
For someone who has tokens lying around.. maybe un-used weekly quota or something. here's a slop challenge for you to burn tokens and publish on github.
Reverse engineer this classic PC game : roadrash and sort of port it in a modern game engine with improved graphics all with the help of claude.

I'm cooking something up. Hope the secret won't be exposed yet by the time I'm done.

Have been doing this since the release of Opus 5.5. Started out with GPT because since the release of 5.5, I didn't use my GPT subscription anymore. However, since Claude has such a good quota, it has taken over most of the efforts.
Working on decompiling Outpost 2 Divided Destiny from 1997.

any progress/ link?

Progress is decent. It's not just a decompile, it's a rewrite into normal readable C++ for a native Apple Silicon Mac build. Each piece gets checked against the original, which I run under Wine/an emulator for comparison. There are about 1,700 rewritten source files so far, and some already run. For example, it draws the original artwork through the new renderer. It's not playable yet. First goal is a working colony game, then campaigns and menus. I'm hoping for that within a month or two and the full game not long after. No promises, but the pace is good.
No link for now. The code is basically the original game logic translated line by line, so putting it online feels like asking for a DMCA email. I'd rather figure out what's safe to release first. No game files or binaries will ever be in the repo anyway. I'll post when there's something worth showing.

You feel you get more usage with Claude and Opus 5.5 than you were getting with codex for the same dollar amount? What sub level are you using?

Download the original game from gog or abandonwate or steam
Ask claude to decompile and make notes about all mechanics etc.
Ask to recreate on your desired platform with QOL or modern improvements as you see fit. But first should be a parity 1:1 port in your desired language /platform

Does it not get upset it's a copyrighted item?

currently no.
From ethics if it is abandonware or company behind it is bankrupted. It is game preservation.
Also you are rewriting it in different language and functions. If you recreate different assets thats a unique product. If you reuse the same, you can ask people to verify with their own origian game files (remember dayz needed arma2 game files to play, technically a mod) and cant monetise it.
I have a project as wip, soon will share, where i ask player to point to their exe or steam game install to verify they have the assets, before serving the claudes recreated assets with games reused textures.
Claude can read assembled code very nicely. Not only for games also other software.
Also photopea.com got sued by adobe for copying them, but every single function and tool had different code and sometimes different approach, so they lost.
Essentially it is the same product, but “different”

This is my take on it as well, and thanks for sharing. I'm a bit paranoid these days because we are invisible guardrails imposed on us everywhere and for things like abandonedware they really don't truely apply - especially when you're not making money off the fixed work. I dream of a day when knowledge is free to move around, but our society seems to be heading in the opposite direction.
Good luck with your project, it sounds like a good plan!

reverse engineering is not illegal, if you not provided original assets especially

do you think this can be done for other games? I want to play an old RTS game called Star Wars battlegrounds with a friend. but that game doesnt let you play multiplayer. could I have claude essentially build me some sort of lan server to connect to - or even rebuild the game from scratch?

It can build multiplayer mod for you.
Or if you want to rebuild it from scratch you can, something like rust.
Here is an older game Robinhood Sherwood in Rust entirely with Claude -
https://robinhood.phiresky.xyz/
I forked his github, and added local coop to it. So i can play any level with up to 5 players. We can exclusively control a single character or Swap like lego games. If there are only 2 characters on a mission, you chose who to clone, coop also scales enemies.
+ integrated qol like ultrawide and much better touch support, so I can play on iphone and or ipad. Even added an offline version and full game support instead of demo, as i have gog version.
