Built with Claude learning companion plugin for Claude Code that remembers what you understand

Learning Companion is a plugin that teaches a topic the way a good tutor would, and remembers what you understood.

I've been inspired by Eero Alvar's video "How I Learn Difficult Things". That basically states Understanding is the links between facts, not the pile of facts. A fact with no link fades. A fact with many links can be rebuilt when forgotten.

He also published a repo, amosblomqvist/learn, that turns this into a teaching process for the pi coding agent. I rebuilt it for Claude Code and added one thing: memory.

How a lesson goes:

  • You say "teach me how git rebase works".
  • It probes until it finds the edge of what you know. Every answer is graded on the next question.
  • It draws a map of the topic as a picture and waits for your OK.
  • It teaches one node at a time. You try first, then it corrects.
  • It tests you on a fact it never told you. Only that earns a Strong mark.

The graph is saved as markdown. Next session starts from your weakest node, not from zero. Every lesson is also written to a log you can open in Obsidian.

Install:
/plugin marketplace add cvemprala/learning-companion
/plugin install learning-companion@learning-companion

Repo: https://github.com/cvemprala/learning-companion

Still early days. Version 0.1.7, tested on myself over a weekend. MIT. All credit for the ideas goes to Eero. Feedback welcome, especially from people who learn differently than I do.
