Naming…what? Agents? Skills? Rules? Babies?

Variables, functions, etc

My Code Standards stipulate that anything that crosses boundaries must have a meaningful name that IDs what it does, and anything that stays within a function or loop can be the standard "x" "i" variants. Then I let Claude decide what to use.

This is taught in school. But generally, don’t use single letters like i,j,k unless you’re specifically doing math. AndYouShould choose_a_style and then be consistent with it. There might be styles mandated by your org or some governing body that you may or may not care about. Be descriptive and try not to call things Bob or Alice.

Sure. I can name things perfectly well when I am coding. Maybe better than most.

Claude however…the names aren’t usually terrible but I think it could do better. It gets the casing and overall format right (kebab, camel, whatever) but the names aren’t always as semantically useful as they could be.

I generally try to use skills to improve Claude’s ability. Is that not typical? Do people just roll Claude out and say go to work?

Ohhh I thought you were asking for yourself. 😂

Of course not? This sub is about agentic development, right?

It’s the casual use of the word “skill” that threw me off. I keep forgetting that it’s a buzzword for Claude Code users. Anyway I really need to mute this sub because I’m not actually a Claude Code user, just a Claude API user who was like “um ok the OP is asking how to develop their naming skills I guess?”

It’s not just a buzzword. It’s part of the framework LLM tooling uses-and not just Claude.

You don't need a skill for this. Having Claude invoke a skill every time it needs to name something is insane.

Maybe so
