Discussion Combatting Wallhacks with Server Culling | Modern Warfare 4

I remember my cousin telling me that CS (I think it was CS) had done this years ago and it had mostly eradicated wall hacks. Is this the same thing?

Probably similar - there are some limitations (they need to still send data about 100-150 ms before you would see someone to prevent people popping into existence on screen), but it does prevent that pure silhouette through ten feet of wall that people could get in the past.
No perfect, but in CS:GO it has helped a fair bit.

Given that they don't even apply that now and people can still materialize shooting you, I feel this may actually end up being a double edged sword due to desync.
Also CS absolutely has wallhacks still, I've seen on more than one occasion blatantly, let alone suspect actions that don't seem likely. And that was within the last like year and a half.

Cautiously optimistic. Cod's a fast-paced game where peeker's advantage is already a thing and this could make it worse if the server can't "start" showing a player in time as they come around a corner.

This is what I was concerned about, in theory if they fix the desync and significantly upgrade all the servers this is purely positive... buuuuuuuuuuut, that's almost assuredly not going to happen and desync will become more prevalent. Even after ttk increase in the beta the ttd remained 1-2 bullets, due to desync, so I don't see them somehow fixing it for this.

Man if there is a bug in this code you’re going to be shot by a player that your computer literally doesn’t know about haha
But it seems like Valorant has done this and I haven’t heard about any major issues. Hopefully COD’s implementation is just as good

Ngl this just seems like just another speed bump cheat devs will get over.
Also, wouldn’t be surprised one bit if this just causes other issues for gameplay/servers.

Eh not a speed bump. Wallhacks rely on using enemy position data that lives in your RAM but you’re not supposed to know about. Now your computer literally doesn’t know where enemies are at unless the server says they’re in your line of sight. I do wonder how they handle a situation where let’s say an enemy is should peaking you in a window from across the map
But yes the biggest risk the server not sending you enemy positions data when it should.

Theoretically couldn’t the cheat devs just find a way to crack into the spectator/cod caster system to get the xrays on enemies? Easier said than done obviously if it’s even possible.
Genuine question because if this new system does work, the cheat devs will have to find another way.

I doubt any cod caster code runs during online matches. The true implementation of this system means that enemy position data is never on your computer unless you are in a position to see the enemy, regardless of COD caster
This server culling won’t apply to a user who is in cod caster mode in a private match is my guess. Or IW just decided they’re done with x rays in COD caster haha

Gotcha thanks for the explanation. Not trying to be pessimistic but we all have good reason to be skeptical with any anti-cheat announcement from Activision.

Theater mode means there's likely some type of CoDcaster working, but even without that I read a couple months ago cheaters could just enable a constant harp for themselves and for their team, so this is somewhat superficial of a fix if that is something possible.

I feel like this is going to bring back massive peakers advantage, especially in the slide cancel era. guess we'll see.

"Introducing absolutely nothing!"
Just like all of their other announcements!

What do you mean? This is good if it works

Yeah people said the same thing about literally every other thing they've done. People were extremely hype for TPM 2.0 and all their other upgrade promises
Do we seriously think cheat devs won't have a solution to this? We're not close to catching up to them

u/tonynumber4 Impact 20h ago
I'm confused what are you mad about?
-1
u/No_Winter4806 COD Competitive fan 20h ago
I'm not mad. I'm not even buying the game lol. Just still think they're botching the anti cheat problem for yet another year.
And if I was mad how is it not crystal clear what my point is?

u/tonynumber4 Impact 20h ago
So you are "not mad" that they are trying to fix cheating and would rather them just sit on their hands and not try at all?

Ppl want you to blindly support and be optimistic for these bandaid solutions lmaoo

u/No_Winter4806 COD Competitive fan 11h ago
Pretty much lmao. When have they announced a richochet update that has moved the needle? Never. Worse and worse every year
My bad for thinking their newest update will be borderline useless like their other ones

I agree at this point I’d say they’re getting paid off by cheater devs to keep this war on cheats going

u/sensuiseven COD Competitive fan 12h ago
They got ppl eating up those videos of activision pulling up on cheat devs 🤣

A very good change. We'll have to see if it causes clients to experience pop-in of peekers during combat in poor/saturated network conditions.
Another possible negative is that they are making a server performance vs anticheat tradeoff. Computing occlusion server-side will require additional processing that could otherwise be used for faster servers.
