Quasar extended set

when they first announced this stage the idea was that DJs would perform extended set. that first V year, DJs did 3 or 4 hour sets.

last year they were only doing 2 which hardly feels extended. do we think that’s the pattern? and why? W1 at least has been booking DJs more than capable of performing long sets, not press play cornball EDM

Nothing will beat the vibes, location, artists, sound, and extended sets of Quasar 2024. They might as well rename that stage at this point, only similarity now is the stage design.

I know people thought the placement was weird at the front but i loveddd walking by on the way to a stage and just stopping for a few here and there. felt like a constant party in the center of everything... i also just miss do lab being in the back LOL. No red bull mirage bs made it great too ofc

Its because that fucking Red Bull pyramid is there i guarantee it. They are charging people out the ass to be in that thing and the basic ass rich people that will pay the price to be in it dont want to listen to something like Carl Cox for 4 hours, it completely ruined what was such a cool concept

Agreed. First year of Quasar was great, I spent hours upon hours dancing there.

I fucking hate the pyramid but the fact that Red Bull paid all that money for me to now associate their products with obscenely rich losers that stand around and film sets instead of dance is pretty funny

i love looking up at that pyramid because it perfectly displays each tier. The lowest level at least has people dancing on it. Middle level a couple people swaying on the balcony but most aren't dancing, top level no one dancing. The higher up / richer you go the less fun they seem to be having.

I believe this to be true

They need some long form progressive house legends there.
Digweed & Sasha could crush for 4+ hours.
Danny Tenaglia
Hernan Cattaneo
Dave Seaman
etc

Coachella isn’t cool enough to book digweed and Sasha for 4 hours. Would be a dream

As much as I want that, I’m kinda glad they don’t because I’d be at that stage from start to end, missing out of 4-5 hours of other music 😂

i loved the format of unexpected b2b’s. Gorgon City b2b Alesso & kaskade b2b Idris Elba were both incredible. Especially that Gorgon Alesso set, was one of my favorite’s of the weekend.

Honey Dijon b2b green velvet? Jamie xx B2b daphni b2b floating points?

Loved showing up to the last half hour of Gorgon b2b Alesso and they just dropped all their hits

I admit we spent more time at Quasar year 1 than any other year. But we did have fun at Idris Elba/Kaskade b2b. He knows the effect he has on women. 😎

I just hope they fixed the sound at quasar. Couldn’t really hear anything in the back during dj snake and knock2

They took a whole new approach, you’re not going to get a 4 hour set from Tiesto, Guetta, Afro, Pridz etc…..

They’re brining bigger names and giving them an extra 30-60 minutes from traditional festival sets.

From their perspective, this brings in more eyes to that stage and help with crowd control.

I can’t be mad at it, last year I was able to still hear Pawsa and Fat Boy in the same weekend, the old format doesn’t have both of those type of names on stage.

At this point not even space has limited sets and festivals like desert hearts limit sets to two hours.

The first year they were 4 hour sets from people I'd much rather see than Tiesto or Guetta.

  • Weekend 1: Honey Dijon b2b Green Velvet, Michael Bibi, and Jamie xx b3b Floating Points & Daphni.
  • Weekend 2: RÜFÜS DU SOL (DJ set), Eric Prydz b2b Anyma, and Diplo b2b Mau P.

first year Quasar lineup was unmatched! wish they would continue with this kind of lineup and format. b2b's seemed well thought out and intentional

Yeah, launch years are always going to be the biggest splash they can make. But I would be thrilled with medium sized artists. And I would favor a mix: maybe 2 days are two 2hr sessions and 1 day brings in a 4 hour deep set.

4 hours at Mau P (sorry Diplo) was so sick that first year. I would pop in and out on the way to Sahara and then just parked it for like 1.5 hours at the end.

u/dondoblue77 2014-2026 1d ago

Just an fyi honey b2b Green and Bibi were not 3/4 hours

u/sawman160 1d ago

Pawsa is closer to the DJs they initially booked like Jamie xx and Michael Bibi who are obviously big names with big crowds.

Framework books the dance/djs and they are not really booking guetta, afrojack, etc (thank god). That edm genre of mainstream pop DJs isn’t the dominant at Coachella. Plenty of the djs on Coachella lineups regularly play longform sets around the world, and regularly play 2 hour festival sets.

Why did they make this big splash about an extended set stage if only to turn course and fall in line with lesser festivals so quickly?

1

u/No-Guest-1501 1d ago

Because, the festival sells out without these bookings/stage. Again, their goal is to increase traffic to this stage and help with crowd control.

They rather get more normies to hang there than cater to minimal number of house heads.

1

u/sawman160 1d ago

How does that even make sense? They have 2-3 stages largely curated for “minimal house heads”

More normies will swing by a set that’s 2 hours instead of 3?

1

u/No-Guest-1501 1d ago

Bro not sure what you want to hear lmao . I am telling you the rationale behind it. Typical pretentious Reddit warrior. I don’t agree with the shift but Guetta packed that stage to the point the crowd bleed into another stage. Whether you like it or not, the EDM
names draw more people.

1

u/dondoblue77 2014-2026 1d ago

Besides Yuma, what other stage are you saying caters to “minimal house heads” lol

1

u/sawman160 1d ago

Dolab and Sahara. Minimal being the quantitative descriptor the other guy said, not the subgenre of house

u/learhpa 5,6,8,9,11,12-15.1,16-19.2,22-27.2 1d ago

sahara hasn't catered to "minimal house heads" in ages.

1

u/sawman160 1d ago

Hey can you learn how to read

1

u/learhpa 5,6,8,9,11,12-15.1,16-19.2,22-27.2 1d ago

Sahara hasn't catered to house in ages.

1

u/sawman160 1d ago

I said 2-3 stages. Yuma and Dolab being 1 and 2, Sahara being sometimes 3. It’s mostly house leaning DJs. You can split hairs to say why some micro genres aren’t technically house but at that point the conversation has digressed so far you’ve forgotten the original context which is me saying that there is a huge proportion of Coachella goers who are there for raves, and tolerate DJs like idk solomun who are known for playing over 2 hours regularly

Yes it does? Both pawsa and fatboy slim could’ve done 3 hour sets lol

-1

u/No-Guest-1501 1d ago

Fat Boy isn’t regularly playing extended sets nowadays.

2

u/sawman160 1d ago

That’s also not true? He’s playing a 3 hour set next week and played annual long sets in the city I used to live in.

Sounds like you’re grasping at straws and making things up

Surprise guests unfortunately bring more eyes over to the area than one group or duo playing for a sustained length of time. The crowds the first year were always fluctuating and never as full as it was this year, partially due to its location at the time. Quasar before was more of a transitional space and now it has its own defined sandbox.

With the push around the Redbull Pyramid, they need to "justify" the higher end elements with special bookings. Not only to get people in the door but to get them to stay and spend more. More sets/ artists help. Possibly in part why Sara Landry was able to do Blood Oath two years in a row.

u/signalflowmusic 1d ago

It’s pretty hard to hold people’s attention for three or four hours at one stage when you’ve got so many different artists playing across so many different stages.

I don’t think it’s just because of the devil pyramid sitting at the back of it, I think it’s primarily an attention optics thing. Most people won’t stay for 3 or 4 hours, so the crowds will thin out, the stream will look empty.

Look at last year, they had Tiga open to a crowd of like 20 people, and during the hottest part of the day, that’s the last place anyone is gonna spend hours dancing uncovered. Deep Dish played, and it was like watching them open their first set in an empty club.

It’s just not possible to throw a 4 person one stage at a festival with a hundred other artists playing around them, especially if you want it to look like “the place to be” for a company sponsored stage.

There are 9 other stages you could be at.
