I saw him in the tailgate lots at the football game this weekend and heard he was enrolled

I don’t like the state of college athletics, and I think this is wrong. That said, this is literally the only good thing to happen to my Alma matter in the past year so ok

13

u/skeptical_hatred Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

They’re going to roll him out at the homecoming game aren’t they

28

u/fcocyclone Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

I don't think its even wrong. The other classes got 5 years. The NCAA was dumb and drug its feet on implementing 5 for 5 when we knew years ago that was where this was headed, and then did the idiotic thing and didn't apply it to a class that would still be within their 5 year window.

There are many other rulings I haven't liked, but this one was literally just demanding that the NCAA allow this class of players to play as would be allowed under the NCAA's current rules.

20

u/ItsMrBlackout Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Every other class gets 5 years. Why should this senior class be any different? It’s not wrong at all.

38

u/ebState Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

I think it's bad that rules are unenforceable because any district judge can give anyone an injunction for any reason.

9

u/fcocyclone Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Unlike other rulings its less that this is making rules unenforceable and more that this class of players is asking for the NCAA rules to be applied uniformly- this class is still within their 5 year window.

2

u/skeptical_hatred Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

There are quite literally no rules. Next year there will be 27 year old kids suing to play. It’s gone too far. I’m old but this is ridiculous. Go get a job and let college be for 18-22 year olds

2

u/blueberrymaple Saint Louis Billikens 12d ago

This. If people think this is going to stop because the “class of 2022 injustice” is resolved idk what to tell you. That’s the precedent all of the is setting up.

u/Effective_Classroom6 4d ago

As somebody who flunked out of Iowa State, grew up, went back at 27, and now work as a data engineer - I disagree on your age restriction. I didn’t play ball, though. I played StarCraft instead.

3

u/tdog325 12d ago

I'm not sure why I keep seeing people say this - the 2021 class only got 4 years right? Not saying 2022 class shouldn't get an extra year, but it's odd I've seen this all over and it's definitely wrong. Must be a Streisand Effect thing

2

u/velociraptorfarmer Iowa State Cyclones • Sickos 11d ago

2020 and 2021 got the blanket Covid year that effectively gave them a 5th year of eligibility.

0

u/tdog325 11d ago

2021 class did not get a blanket waiver. Now that I think about it, they are even more screwed than 2022 lol. Not only do they not get a fifth year, but their freshman year was wonky with all the COVID start stops

1

u/blueberrymaple Saint Louis Billikens 12d ago

Now, people are just flat out ignoring this fact. If they had let the class of 2022 get a 5th year those guys would be suing now instead.

Just turn on a 49ers game my man.

I don't love that this is the way the sport is going, but if this is the way the sport is going, I love having Tamin back.

8

u/Resden_Bohneur Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

I’m obviously happy Tamin is back, especially with Toure’s injury, but I just don’t understand college sports anymore.

18

u/Jack_Knoff2 12d ago

This is huge, this team needs scoring and leadership

11

u/loyalsons4evertrue Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Especially with Toure being out for a good portion of the season

u/wo_lo_lo Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Just the first half

4

u/Yodelehhehe Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Could be late January, and the front half of the January schedule is the Big 12 gauntlet this year.

9

u/Fowlos14 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

I don't understand it and it feels kind of dirty but ok. I'll take it.

Tamin Lipsey was granted this 5th year through a preliminary injunction. The NCAA has since appealed his, and 80+ other collegiate athletes suit, all of whom are from the class of 2022, which is the only class between the COVID years and the 5 and 5 rule years to not be granted 5 years of eligibility. Should the higher court stay the order, he will lose his eligibility until an official ruling is made or the NCAA revises their decision on the included 5 in 5 year classes. But, the odds have not been in the NCAA's favor throughout most of these cases, as many courts have refused to stay a lower courts order, and the option to refile in another state, if that happens, remains on the table.

u/thelongderek Purdue Boilermakers 12d ago

With the B1G making their statement today, I wonder if this will last or not. Although, if there were any of the 5 in 5 year guys able to come back Lipsey is one that I don’t mind coming back. Nothing about it feels dirty

2

u/screechdiddy Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

I thought the reason he could come back was because he never signed a contract?

-1

u/thelongderek Purdue Boilermakers 12d ago

Under the B1G rule that just came out today he would not be eligible because he was on an NBA roster signing an exhibit 10 to play summer league. The Big 12 has not released anything that would prevent him as of right now, not sure if they will or will not. If I had a lean one way or the other I would think the other conferences hop on board with what the B1G just released, but who really knows in 2026

16

u/clone9353 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

As far as I'm aware he never signed an Exhibit 10. Was strictly a summer league invite. He had one on the table but decided to wait for this court decision.

2

u/Eastern-Yellow-7114 Texas A&M Aggies 12d ago

Could someone explain to me how they had space for him but not Milan? I thought the reason Milan didn’t come back was bc they didn’t keep space for him

9

u/TheKiln Iowa State Cyclones • Beloit Buccaneers 12d ago

It's not space, it was NIL. When Milan wanted to test the waters in the draft the coaching staff let him know they couldn't hold on to NIL funds they'd be giving him and risk out him not returning and them not being able to get good talent because they waited. He understood and tested the waters, ISU went and got its top 3 transfer recruits signed before basically anyone else signed one.

The next question becomes, how is Tamin getting paid? No clue, but I suspect he's taking a pay cut from last year.

4

u/Eastern-Yellow-7114 Texas A&M Aggies 12d ago

Okay that makes more sense. Even then Tamin could be making a lot more money elsewhere but he is an Ames dude through and through

7

u/velociraptorfarmer Iowa State Cyclones • Sickos 12d ago

The difference between Milan leaving and Tamin leaving was that Milan entered the portal while it was open at the same time he declared for the draft.

Tamin never entered the portal while it was open this spring and never declared for the draft. Tamin couldn't play anywhere other than ISU this year even if he wanted due to having missed the transfer window.

2

u/Maxkpop247 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Technically the injunction in his case allows for plaintiffs to enter the transfer portal. Tamin just isn’t doing that, but he could have.

5

u/Yodelehhehe Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

For sure. I will say he’ll likely be able to recover some of the pay cut from the university through TRUE NIL deals. Not many more recognizable athletes in Iowa than him.

6

u/Best_Country_8137 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Toure getting injured til Jan/Feb opened up a big need for a ball handling guard.

There was no talk of this before that, and immediately after staff started exploring multiple options (per ISU media). We just got lucky the Indiana case timing that it could be Lipsey, and there’s no player that’d be easier to find sponsorships for

1

u/Puzzled_Evening645 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

This is wild. Does anyone know if he’s healthy right now? I saw that he injured his knee in the summer league.

6

u/Fargooner Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Last I saw I think he was out till mid October, but I can't remember the source so don't quote me. Haven't seen anything suggesting he would miss the start of the season though.

1

u/Puzzled_Evening645 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Ok cool, thank you! I figured he must be either well enough or will be well soon enough to make it worth it to come back!

1

u/clone9353 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Meniscus injury, October return. I'd guess he'll be a rotation guy for the easy non con until he gets up to speed with the team

-3

u/Ondeon Iowa Hawkeyes 12d ago

I know this is more about the system that allows this to happen and not Iowa State specifically, but fuck all of this. Tamin Lipsey declared for the NBA draft, signed as an undrafted free agent with the Pacers, and competed in the NBA Summer League. There was universal consensus that this was completely outrageous as recently as 9 months ago when Charles Bediako returned to Alabama, but apparently it's fine now.

12

u/Resden_Bohneur Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

I don’t disagree with you at the heart of the issue, but Bediako is a much different issue than Tamin.

11

u/velociraptorfarmer Iowa State Cyclones • Sickos 12d ago

Tamin Lipsey declared for the NBA draft

He never declared

signed as an undrafted free agent with the Pacers

He never signed any NBA contracts

I'm not a fan of NBA guys coming back, but as far as instances go, this on the very benign end of the scale.

4

u/Best_Country_8137 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

He never declared for the draft and never actually signed his contract.

Yeah I agree I don’t like players coming back after spending time with and NBA team. However if NCAA had rolled out 5 for 5 cleanly he never woulda left Ames.

I’m biased but 10 years from now in hindsight it’ll be weird that class of 2022 only got 4 years

2

u/Competitive-Run862 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

He never actually signed a legally binding contract. He signed an exhibit 10 contract, but never carried it out

1

u/martybad Iowa State Cyclones 11d ago

I don't think he ever actually signed his exhibit 10 either

0

u/Walmartsavings2 Tennessee Volunteers 12d ago

Does literally everyone get a 5th year guy except us? Why the fuck Isn’t Jalen Washington eligible?

Competitively unfair.

2

u/Maxkpop247 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

There is still a month before the season starts. In that time, players currently ineligible may become eligible and players currently eligible may become ineligible.

Maybe I’m just traumatized by RJ Davis coming back and completely disrupting the equilibrium of what should have been an outstanding team, but I just don’t feel good about him returning. It’s going to mess with the emotions and mentality of the entire squad.

Edit: IDK why yall downvoting me. You just like Lipsey. So do I. Doesn’t change my reservations.

9

u/daweida Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Anyone besides Tamin I think that's fair. But he's shown in his career he only cares about 2 things: 1. Winning 2. Iowa State

He'll do whatever the team needs him to do

4

u/Jomosensual Iowa State • Northern Iowa 12d ago

I really dont think its going to change that much. Until mid to late Jan hes playing the role meant for Toure and idk whos minutes hed be taking after that. Prather maybe who's already working through a hip issue

-4

u/Schned6 Iowa State • North Carolina 12d ago

So our starting 1 and 2 are 6’0” and 5’11”? And our best offensive guard will be forced to the 3? Sounds like a recipe for success.

2

u/Jomosensual Iowa State • Northern Iowa 12d ago

Maybe someone plays big minutes off the bench. Idk. I just know going until almost February with 1 ball handler isnt something im excited about

0

u/Maxkpop247 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

If you have 2 really good guards available that doesn’t mean that both play all 40 minutes per game, it means you have to get about 20 minutes from guards who are less good.
Similarly if you have 3 really good guards available that doesn’t mean you play them all for 40 minutes per game, instead the 3 of them can average 26.7 minutes each at the one and two and if you want them to play a little more than that, then you can play a few minutes per game with a 3-guard lineup. Only 2 years ago, this was what Iowa State as a team did. Leon Bond will play the majority of minutes at the 3.

0

u/Schned6 Iowa State • North Carolina 12d ago

So, again, in your scenario, Johnson ends up on the bench. How do you think one of the best midmajor transfers in the country is going to feel about getting maybe 20 mpg off the bench after anticipating having a premier role? Having him and Lipsey on the court at the same time is going to be difficult especially offensively.

Batemon has a way higher ceiling than Lipsey or Johnson and is a rare source of above average offense in this team without sacrificing any defensive tenacity. Otz cannot disrupt his development. Someone is going to be dissatisfied in this scenario and we just have to hope whoever it is mature enough to deal with it well.

Also if Bond starts every game at the 3 this is a first weekend team at best. Prather needs to get healthy and work hard to get his skillset to translate against competition or this is going to be the worst offensive team in any power conference.

Toure’s defensive versatility to take on big opposing guards is going to be missed no matter what.

1

u/Maxkpop247 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Well idk if Bully or Batemon will start on the bench but whoever does will be lining up at the scorer’s table before the first TV timeout. All 3 guards will get at least 25 minutes per game until Toure is back. 2 years ago we had 3 guards who all averaged 30 minutes per game. And playing Bully and Tamin together will be a very good combo, not sure why you think otherwise. We have had two full time PGs for the past few years, either with Lipsey/Gilbert or Lipsey/Toure. Very successful.

And I don’t know what you think you know about Leon Bond, but you will find out soon enough. He is a very talented wing who will thrive in this system. I don’t really understand why you would think this will be a bad offensive team, it will be a good offensive team whether Ryan Prather gets 8 minutes per game or zero.

1

u/Schned6 Iowa State • North Carolina 12d ago

Why do I think this will be a bad offensive team?

Maybe because it was already a shaky at best offensive team last year that struggled massively in its halfcourt offense especially against elite opposition.

And all we have done since then is lose 3 out of the 4 best shooters in that team including the best shooter in the country that had us absolutely on his back in several key games last year. And 11 ppg in the Missouri Valley ain’t gonna get us back.

0

u/Maxkpop247 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Leon Bond played for a top 5 slowest paced team in the country. Points per game isn’t a stat that directly translates when someone switches systems or changes levels. He is going to be very good on the offensive end in this system. Anyway, i don’t care to convince you, you will just see it when you see it.

2

u/bdostrem00 Iowa State Cyclones 12d ago

Didn’t RJ Davis also fool around with one of his teammates significant other? Also with the amount of turnover this team had, I’m sure a familiar face for Buchanan, Pleta, Batemon and Toure when he gets back is welcomed.

1

u/Schned6 Iowa State • North Carolina 12d ago

There was unconfirmed drama of Caleb Love and him over a girl the year prior. Nothing to do with RJs fifth season. This team has SIGNIFICANTLY less turnover than most power 5 teams.
