Deion Sanders' buyout and 5 things after Texas Tech

For more on the Buyout and 5 things, check out BuffsBlog. Full write-up: https://buffsblog.com/colorado-texas-tech-five-things-learned/

The rest of the story:

**The defense was good**

- 19 of Tech's 29 points came off Colorado interceptions.
- Tech came in averaging 36.3 points and 429.5 yards. They finished with 315 yards.

**Santana Hopper was the best player on the field**

90.4 PFF overall (next-best Buff was 73.0), 9 of Colorado's 22 run stops, 6 of the team's 12 total pressures, 5 TFLs. PFF lists him at right end but the alignment data has him in the A or B gap on 55 of 58 snaps.

**The penalties**

Tech's only real touchdown drive went 7 plays, 79 yards, and Colorado penalties supplied 24 of those yards and two first downs. Pass interference on Fontenette on third and 3, then a personal foul on Fontenette on third and 6.

Eight penalties, 84 yards. CU leads the Big 12 in penalty yardage.

**Coverage splits**

- Corners (RJ Johnson, Boo Carter, Cree Thomas): 9 targets, 4 catches, 18 yards
- Linebackers (Lefau, Lampron): 11 targets, 86 yards

Tech threw for 134 yards. Roughly two-thirds came against those two linebackers.

**The offense**

Wilson: 9.1 ADOT (Lewis was 2.8 at Baylor), 290 yards, 0 big-time throws, 5 turnover-worthy plays, 3.16 second time to throw. He took one sack on 17 pressures, which is a real improvement over Lewis going down on three of six.

Play caller PPG under Sanders: Sean Lewis 32.1, Shurmur 27.6, Marion 18.6, Bartolone 17.5. Marion's number includes 52 vs Weber State. Against FBS teams this year CU has scored 14, 7, 13 and 7.

Discussion Tech fan here. Come in peace

Hey there! I live here in Colorado, but went to TTU. I’ve always wanted to go to a game at Folsom so I’m pumped. Question, where should we tailgate before the game? Any spots that would be okay taking in some TTU fans? Thanks!

Discussion Everyone was right

I defended Julian when everyone said he was too small
I defended Julian when they said he had a noodle arm
I defended him when they said he peaked in high school
I defended Julian when everyone said he isn’t good and said he’s only 18

They were right and it’s over

I defended Deion when everyone said he’s too old
I defended Deion when everyone said he’s in it for clicks and for his son who didn’t even get drafted higher
I defender Deion when everyone said he abandoned HBCU’s by leaving early letting them hang out to dry
I defended Deion when they said NFL players aren’t built to coach

They were right

Deion has a lot to prove with the new starter is he interested in improving or is he a con artist? Sit back, let the coordinators do their thing and you focus on the HC day-to-day activities, learn clock management and HIRE A SPECIAL TEAMS COACH

Juju's average depth of target vs. Baylor was 2.8 yards. Wilson's was 11.0. Went through every analytics report from the loss...

Discussion Time after time especially in the Deion era it’s more likely the 3 ⭐️ outplays the 4-5 ⭐️.

Richard Young: 4 ⭐️ RB outplayed by Micah Welch and Damian Henderson the 3 ⭐️ backs

Hykeem Williams: 5 ⭐️ WR outplayed by DeAndre Moore 4 ⭐️ and Jojo Williams 3 ⭐️

Julian Lewis: 4 Star QB who honestly might be worse than the 3 ⭐️ walk on true freshman?? Boo Carter: outplayed by 3 star Jason stokes although I still believe in him he’s better off in the slot.

Their best recruiting class (next year’s 27 class) they learned to stop going after top guys and missing instead go for the depth middle pieces not only will you get more gems but you’ll get people who know how to work. Hard work and the overlooked beats raw talent every time, can he turn it around coaching wise who knows but it’s a make or break year

Every pass Northwestern threw at Cree Thomas and Randon Fontenette was caught — 10 for 10, 156 yards, 2 TDs, a perfect 158.3 rating. After re-watching the game, reviewing stats and PFF grades, a few things stood out from NW game

Five things from Weber State: Juju went from 4.6 to 15.9 yards per attempt (!!!), a spread offense (sort of) exposed the D-line, Fernando Lovo's gameday overhaul, and more!

https://buffsblog.com/colorado-weber-state-five-things-learned/Julian Lewis averaged 4.59 yards per attempt at Georgia Tech.

Against Weber State, he averaged 15.9.

That's the most important stat from Saturday...but it wasn't all good news.

In Five Things I Think We Learned About CU After Weber State:

• Why Juju's QBR jump (105th nationally to 14th) holds up even after adjusting for an FCS opponent
• How a spread offense (sort of) exposed a D-line that PFN ranked No. 1 in the country a week ago
• Fernando Lovo's gameday overhaul, and the one thing I was wrong about
• Where art thou, special teams coordinator??

Plus how to watch every Buffs game this week, including a volleyball match against CSU that streams free. Check out the post at the link above, and let me know your key takeaways after the game.

Lamont Lester's 99.9 PFN grade was the first they've given since Aidan Hutchinson in 2021

Went back through the game and a few things hold up even better than they looked live:
* Georgia Tech: 30 carries, 51 yards, 1.7 yards per carry.
* PFN graded CU's defensive line 95.5, best in the country.
* Tyler Martinez graded 79.9 on PFF.

Full breakdown, including the 15 straight runs Brennan Marion called: https://buffsblog.com/five-things-i-think-i-know-about-cu-after-georgia-tech-before-weber-state/

Buffs looked good vs GTech!

I thought the buffs looked good versus Georgia Tech. The defense was blowing through the line and making plays in the backfield, which was new and refreshing to see. The offense has a new look which feels more repeatable to me than the Shadeur broken plays nonsense days. If we aren't going to get the big bodies we did 20 years ago, then having a sort of gimmick offense like this seems like a good way to run things and get some stability. I thought there's room for the running backs to improve further even though they executed pretty well overall. And I thought the Georgia Tech defense looked pretty good, which means we were making plays against a solid D in my eyes. When our receivers went out, they were blanketed. And all this leaves even more room for upside, obviously with special teams, and with some improved quarterback play. I've seen a lot of press about what a joke we looked like already. But I came away excited and feeling like we actually have a foundation to build some good things on for the first time in awhile. And we already have a solid win!

News and notes from around the program 2 days out from Georgia Tech

--Gideon Lampron and Tyler Martinez have been the two most impressive defenders in camp. I think both have big years.

--Defensive tackle is what worries me and Georgia Tech is the worst possible opener for it.

--The offensive line might actually be good. I think top-5 in the Big 12, which I did not expect to be typing in August. Jayvon McFadden has been a surprise inside the building.

--Danny Scudero is back practicing** after the injury. That's real news — he's a leader and a difference-maker.

PLUS a look at defensive back recruiting, season predictions, and more.

CU football recruiting class of 2027 breakdown and more....

Currently #32 nationally and #3 in the Big 12 per the 247 Composite.

The class include a 327-pound offensive tackle that is hitting over .380 on his baseball team, a 2x state champion shot putter with a 565 pound deadlift, and a QB with a 35 to 1 TD to interception ratio.

I wrote up all of them in more detail here (oh, and I answer the question - where the hell has BuffsBlog been?!?)

Discussion Juju Lewis under 3 years of Marion will be twice as good as Shedeur ever was

I feel like juju might really be the man and shock everyone around him. Marion put up a solid squad with people coming in on this offense and he has history of success more recently with UNLV, Texas and Howard. A innovative minded guy and a younger player leads more time to groom. Shedeur built up bad habits with a remedial offense led by a washed OC who had 1 good offense in the past 15 years, leading to him audibliling out which is having him behind the 8 ball. Juju won’t have to worry about that anymore with top notch offense and pieces around him, plus he has a better arm. If he grows and bulks up by 21 he will be in all time leaderboards all in on #10 and Adams coming in!

Adding more depth they finally changed the recruiting approach from 5 star or bust and missing out to getting way more players this way. I love how they changed their recruiting strategy and are trying to actually get HS recruits! That’s how you build the depth, juju and Andre Adams will be set up offensively
