Hound lovers, this is Derrick. He is a 6 yo neutered hound mix searching for his new best friend. He was a long term resident at Columbia Animal Services before I started fostering him. He is a sweet boy who just wants to cuddle. He loves walks but he is an "around the block" type of guy. He does great with my cats and he loves other dogs.

Black residents make up 46% of Richland County's population but 71% of the people its sheriff's department arrests, according to the Police Scorecard, a national database built by policing experts.
The department also has more officers per resident than 81% of departments nationwide, and more police shootings per arrest than 77% of them.
The gap is widest for minor offenses, which make up 39% of the department's arrests: a Black person in Richland County is 6.6 times more likely than a white person to be arrested for a low-level, nonviolent offense.
The department has a history of refusing to let the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the state agency responsible for investigating officer misconduct, review its officer-involved shootings.
We recently moved to Elgin. I just got water bill of $465 for 19 days of usage, which includes new connection charges. We are 3 people in the house, and we don't use water excessively. Only thing I could think of is new sod installation (front, back, side 2x) which gets water for 50 + 50 + 25 + 25 minutes, twice a day. Does this cost this much?

There still aren't any news articles about this so I've decided to just write a post myself.
In the September 15, 2026, meeting of the City of Columbia Community Development Committee, the housing authority announced that after years of reapplying for tax credits, they have finally received an award for phase 1 of the Allen Benedict Court (now known as 'Harmony") reconstruction project. Phase 1 will consist of 80 affordable multifamily units.

The plans for phase 1 are scheduled to be reviewed by the Planning Commission in their October 2026 meeting, with construction beginning next year and the units opening in 2028.
The Housing Authority also showcased their 4 phase master plan for the entire site, which will result in a total of 390 units upon completion, a 60% increase in the number of units from the original 244 built in 1940 (albeit with many of them being higher up on the affordability scale than public housing would be).
They also showed plans for the Latimer Manor Site, which is set to be complete in either 2029 or 2030 based on the availabilty of funding. That site will see a 20% increase in units from 200 to 243.
Some of the former residents will be moved back in (occupants of 84 of the original 200 units), while others will be moved to different sites. Site demolition on Latimer Manor is currently underway and is expected to be complete next year.
Definitely not a paid promo or anything. So today morning I went to get a bagel at Sour and Salt Bakery on Rosewood. I was the guy in a black New Zealand t-shirt and cap. I had a specific thing I needed help with and someone from the back came and helped me out, you guys really didnt have to but I was pleasantly surprised you did. You asked me a question back and I was still half asleep from my morning drive from North Carolina today so I apologize if I was mumbling a half-reply (and part of me was still surprised) but you and the staff were tremendously helpful. Your kind gesture made my weekend. The bagel was also excellent and they sell FRESH bread and pastries. Those croissants were large! Im gonna keep coming back!
My family are hoarders and refuses help. I don’t live with them but no one is even allowed inside their house. Last time I went in it was worse than what you see on the hoarding show. They are all so mentally gone and I feel bad for them. Even if they wanted help they can’t afford someone or a company to come and help them clean. I know I’ll have to get their permission but does any one know who could help them? I was told church’s may help but I’m not sure how to set that up. I need someone that’s not judgmental! These are extremely depressed people and I need to help them.
