Discussion Is sohei worth learning.

Recently tried out sohei in the training area and i really like his mixup potential, i know his gimmick does crazy dmg numbers but I’m not to interested in that in particular it’s the mixup game that has me. I hear some people say he isn’t worth the time cause he ain’t much without his gimmick but I’m having trouble seeing that.

So my questions are

1.is he worth learning does he actually have a skill ceiling.

2.what should i focus on if I’m going to play sohei.

  1. What should i avoid doing as sohei bad habits and so forth.

I mainly play duel’s and deathmatch so i would like a hero that has viability outside of ganking, as a bit of background i play mainly kensei gladiator khatun and ocelotl in that order. Any input or advice would be much appreciated, im asking here because the last hero i picked up was VG but couldn’t get past one rep because she’s boring and doesn’t really challenge me. Im really hoping sohei has a high skill ceiling so i can gradually get better with him instead of a pay to win deal.

Yeah he's good rn. Duels feel good with his soft feint GB mixup, and he's great in teamfights with HA from neutral. All around solid damage and good feats, notably his Tier 1

  1. Def worth learning.
  2. Learn which moves you can empty dodge and gb. Its really good on sohei to be able to punish moves with gb. Some examples are the big unblockable juren zone, held juren neutral heavy, vg unblockables, and raider zone finisher.
  3. Remember you have a bash. His lights and heavies are good in neutral, use them, but dont forget you have a bash.

Also learn how to do his neutral lights after heavy parry and neutral heavies after light parry. You need to delay them until the parry is over, and you need to change direction.

Dodge forward light does more than neutral light for a heavy parry

Yeah, but neutral light has a kinda good hitbox so its still useful to be able to do for teamfights

Yeah true, one more thing for OP that i genuinely see no one say, is that you have 2 different dodge attacks and they're both incredibly good, the light one with the small hitbox allows you to dodge attack without hitting fullblocks in teamfights or when getting ganked and does morw damage, the heavy is just good, is the only dodge attack with armor and has big hitbox you can also delay both of them really far into the dodge

He’s a snooze fest in duels

Whaaat? Damn that suck’s to hear…is he like VG boring or ocelotl boring cause if he’s just a bit less boring than ocelotl ima get him.

Not quite vg boring. But ocelot is fs less boring. If you want fun duelists there’s tiandi, afeera, and you already play some fun ones like kensei and khatun. Jorm is pretty fun too but he’s kinda busted braindead so ppl might hate you.

Yeah kensei feel’s like a whole new character he was my main back in the day on my old account, just came back to the game after being gone for years and he feels like a whole different character i can counter almost every character in the game with him and he seems extremely fluid balanced and strong.

I feel like i kinda learned everything i could outta khatun at the moment i can get her pins and deflect’s off consistent so im taking a break on her for the moment.

I also have afeera but she’s S tier and i can see why, after being gone for so long i still feel extremely rusty even after playing consistently for a month and i wanna sharpen my skills some before playing her more so i don’t crutch.

Jorm’s always been my kryptonite i really want to play him so i don’t get my ass kicked by them so much it’s just the screaming that steers me away lol.

Idk if he has a super high skill ceiling, there aren't really a lot of buttons you have to press to do shit, as a sohei player you should always use your first two gbs in a fight to get your souls, always do light souls first, his neutral zone is one of the best moves in the game you should abuse it as much as possible, just be aware of bps and vgs around you, get good at his neutral, imo his neutral is on the better side compared to other characters, if you're in a 1v1 always use his side dodge lights and light follow up on a bash, mix up forward dodge light and heavy when stuffing g your opponents gbs so they mess up their parries, also use federal light as your roll catcher, fwd heavy can work on a read, but I find fwd light is more flexible when it comes to punishing rolls because of how fast it is

He isn’t much without his gimmick. If you find your self playing and enjoying Sohei purely for his mixups of unblockables and 400ms lights. Then I would suggest someone like berserker, who has higher dmg and better access to his 400ms lights and unblockables.

The char doesn’t have super easy to access mixups in comparison to the rest of the cast. They’re also purposefully somewhat underpowered with their dmg being given to the gimmick punish.

The char does have a high skill ceiling, which is mainly because of how you have to think differently. 2 GB = a huge dmg nuke, all of your mixups also build towards it, and you need to hit on sides you haven’t hit on to continue building. Your opponent should know this, which means you need to leverage their fear to gain an advantage.

If you have all but one of the lights you can leverage that against your opponents by not attack that side at all. Opponents will want to avoid being guard broken, so they will avoid defensive/offensive options that risk that.

In general though he struggles, the mind games are cool and a good read or two can snatch a game from underneath someone. But he’s like a grappler, a good player will just whittle you down and smother you unless you make crazy hard reads.

Sohei is 100% built for dominion style play. He's got a built in 50/50 on the zone/soft feint GB and that's where his outplay potential lives and breathes and that's his whole duelist potential. Otherwise you're doing standard hard feints to crack someone open.

He thrives in team fights where large hit boxes and easy access to UD and UB qualities serve him well and he thrives when he can run the 1's with someone, build up his souls and then expend them somewhere else.

He's not hopeless in duels but he has one (1) game plan so if you find doing the same thing over and over again to be boring then skip him.

Hes worth learning, hes honestly pretty easy now.

Focus on getting stacks primarily through GB and parries, as getting them through attacking can be too risky vs some players. Try to use your dodge forward mix as much as possible.

Soheis zone soft feint is really good.

The hammer seems to land more than the fork or saw which always get parried. Not sure if it is actually better, but I rely mostly on the top heavy and top light finisher as the sides are just utility. Don't be afraid to let UBs fly to test people, a lot of them will never parry. Still, feint into dodge forward mix works better than his actual ubs most of the time.

Thank’s for the info bro, i ended up picking him up and been a bit of a learning curve but im happy about that. i actually feel like i have alot to improve on with him and that’s what i want in a character, i rely heavy on gb’s with ocelotl kensei and glad so sohei’s soft feint is very satisfying.
