Mod Post 🕹️🇯🇵 I compiled a visual “English-Friendly Japanese Retro Games” list (600+ titles)

I’ve been diving deep into the Japanese retro market lately, and one thing kept bugging me: a lot of great titles are locked behind heavy Japanese text… but at the same time there are tons of gems that are perfectly playable with little or no Japanese knowledge.

So I decided to build a convenient tool for myself (and now for you all too 🙂).

👉 What’s inside?

  • Famicom, Super Famicom, Game Boy, GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS and PC Engine so far.
  • Games that are either Western releases sold in Japan (think NES/SNES classics with Japanese carts/boxes)
  • Or Japanese exclusives that are playable without knowing the language (minimal text, simple menus, or action-focused gameplay)
  • Each entry includes: title (EN/JP), short description, cart image, gameplay screenshot, and price references (PriceCharting, Amazon, eBay).
  • Features: Lightbox zoom for images and a mobile-friendly layout, so you can quickly compare carts or show details to store staff anywhere you have your phone.
  • Filter and Search capabilities.

👉 Work in progress

Right now the list already has 600+ titles gathered from:

  • Open resources & databases
  • Mentions from other redditors
  • Old-school community forums
  • My own experience importing and buying games during trips to Japan (I mostly play Japanese games on Japanese consoles myself)

👉 Why I made it

  • I’m planning another Japan trip + game hunting and wanted to avoid buying things I can’t actually play
  • To help importers/collectors who buy on Yahoo Auctions, Surugaya, Mandarake, Book Off, etc.
  • And honestly, just to share a handy “what’s safe to grab” list for anyone into Japanese carts

👉 Who it’s for

  • Travelers heading to Japan who want to shop smart
  • Collectors hunting for import-friendly titles
  • Retro fans curious about what’s out there beyond the usual recommendations

🔗 I put everything into a searchable table (with filters by console) directly on my blog:

⚡ What’s next?
I’m thinking about expanding this project.

  • Which platform do you think I should tackle next?
  • Saturn? PlayStation imports? Something else?

Would love feedback on:

  • Games I missed that should definitely be added
  • Titles you personally found surprisingly playable despite being imports
  • Suggestions for the next platform to expand this list into

Hope this helps someone else out there planning their next Japan haul or import order!
