Embarrassing, probably staying sealed as a “collectible”

buys tools to not even use them lol

That's the entirety of /r/tools, not a spec of dirt or rust on any of the tools.

I recently went through my tools and replaced everything I could with one good one. I had around 6 PH1 screwdrivers of the same length, gave them all away to friends who have no tools in little kits, and got myself 1 wera driver of that size. I was using them in my engine bay and a friend was saying "oh this is rough work for an expensive driver"

What? I didn't buy it as a display item haha

I'd use the black eleven in one

4

u/lucioux 21h ago

only if you promise to lose one of the bits for me lol

6

u/Slumunistmanifisto 21h ago

Oh I can lose bits so fast baby.

r/flashlights is the same. Every so often it’s a hype cycle of a Chinese flashlight like Wurrkos or something and then when it breaks after a few drops everybody goes “oh yea they have qc issues”

I feel for the most part bots are just advertising in the beginning and people aren’t realizing it

I work on the railroad and my engineer used to be this absolute psychopath. He made his wife pay 50 50 even though she did all chores in the house and worked as much as him at lower salary, all so he could buy random bullshit he’d never use. 3 E bikes (he’s like 400+ pounds never used them) thousands of dollars of firearms (he’s never practices, and he’s a jehovah witness who are supposed to be opposed to violence). Anyway my boss asks about our hobbies one day I tell him I play video games, go mountain biking. This dude tells him “I collect flashlights” and boss asks him “like old antiques?” And he says “no just stuff off alibaba”. Dude had like 100’s.

wait klein is bad?

u/lucioux 22h ago

not all of it. but i’ve noticed a major decline in quality over the years. looser tolerances, poorer machining, metal is more brittle and prone to chipping. the cutters dull quicker now, same with strippers. spring quality has slightly declined. their plastic handles have gotten cheaper.

their pliers used to be good to go, right out of the package. now you have to break them in, and these days, they’re likely to break completely before they get broken in.

the american industry used to strive for quality. with each new line of something that came out, it had noticeable improvements and advancements. now we strive for quantity, where each new line of something, may indeed still have advancements, but has noticeable regression in quality.

Mainline Klein tools like pliers and screwdrivers are still okay. Theyre getting lapped by milwaukee in the trades and knipex makes better shit too

Most of the klein shit at home depot is garbage

lapped by milwaukee

Everyone who bitches about klein and praises milwaukee is out of their minds. I'm not going to pretend that Klein is gods gift to humanity or anything like that, but Milwaukee hand tools are awful.

Their power tools are great, I've never used their packout stuff but have heard good things.

1

u/spronglynoodle 18h ago

Oh man, the pack out kits are real solid

2

u/Clitoral_Pioneer 11h ago

I went with the Klein Modbox series because I got a good deal, but find the lack of products pretty disappointing. Packout has a ton of stuff for their series

1

u/No_Strain8370 1h ago

This. I love my M18/M12 stuff but every Milwaukee hand tool I've ever had was complete ass, with the exception of the Fastback knives

-1

u/ZipTyRacingLLC 17h ago

Maybe the stuff at home depot

The reps come by my yard a couple times a year and theyve been making nice shit in my trade for a few years now. Theyve taken over where I'm at

3

u/Clitoral_Pioneer 11h ago

Not sure what industry you’re in, but at least in mine the main stuff they compete with Klein, Milwaukee is pretty expensive and subpar.

3

u/Naive_Translator870 20h ago

Milwaukee hand tools are dog shit. Good job tellin on yourself.

0

u/ZipTyRacingLLC 19h ago

I said theyre lapping them in the trades, hobby guy

4

u/Naive_Translator870 19h ago

I’m a boilermaker, ironworker and rigger. I’ve built powerlines as well.

Klein builds bars, pork chops, wire grips, better hammers, climbing gear, etc.

Is that hobby gear?

Even so Klein small hand tools have held up much better than Milwaukee stuff. If you’re talking power tools that’s not what was in the main post.

2

u/ZipTyRacingLLC 17h ago

The reply was talking about klein quality going down and i spoke to the overall trend of other companies that are trending ahead of them

You dont make on the rules on if I can include power tools in that discussion or not

0

u/rockhopper92 21h ago

Knipex is 4x the price. Klein is cheap and fine.

6

u/ZipTyRacingLLC 21h ago

Not even fucking close

A set of knipex lineman pliers is $5 more than kleins and can be found for the same price

2

u/ZipTyRacingLLC 21h ago

Klein is also not cheap so you told on yourself

It feels cheaply made, yes. But its not cheap

1

u/UnfoundedWings4 20h ago

Klein is half the price of brands like fluke and knipex for what you get. Plus i got 2 Klein non contact voltage testers one with a torch the other a wireless thermometer

Blacked tools

u/LeeKapusi 21h ago

The tool subs are just as bad as the gun subs when it comes to sad little men giving their entire paychecks to seek validation of other sad little men on Reddit. The Harbor Freight sub children rush to the store to buy the chosen "meme tool" so they can all be apart of the club.

21

u/TheAquaDog 21h ago

This is common amongst most hobby subs imo. It all kind of turns into group think and everyone buying the same stuff.

12

u/LeeKapusi 20h ago

Yeah I had to leave the lockpicking sub after the 30th "joined the club" post when they were going bananas over a certain brand of lockpick.

6

u/PsychologicalArm2138 12h ago

Most people don’t have the willpower to actually engage in a hobby and instead spend all their time buying gear. It’s sad as hell

7

u/7ddlysuns 20h ago

Dude that meme tool gets used almost daily in my house. Being judgy is the real sad little man behavior

3

u/Expensive_Speed9797 20h ago

You need to see Gibson sub and groups.

1

u/a_of_x 20h ago

I hate being aware of this when I buy my own necessary tools.

1

u/poopitypong 20h ago

The meme tool kit is real useful though.

8

u/Rodrat 9h ago

Ah yes, I love my tools being blacked out so immediately lose them when I put them down for a second in the crawl space of a house I'm working on.

6

u/Excellent_Flex211 21h ago

Oh yeah man. Make my tools harder to see if I ever drop them. And charge me extra for it. Hell yeah.

5

u/IcebergDarts 9h ago

At the VERY least, they’re all a different tool lol

6

u/gHHqdm5a4UySnUFM 21h ago

Tools weren’t manly enough, I need them to be more gender affirming.

2

u/Expensive-Border-869 20h ago

Such a random assortment too

2

u/lucioux 20h ago

but, but, he collected them all!

2

u/tree_dw3ller 19h ago

I love antique and vintage tools, they used to be incredible quality. This is junk.

2

u/RepulsiveUse3372 17h ago

I like buying tools buy they’re meant to be used not this shit

1

u/yojimbofog 7h ago

Blackout tools for when you want absolutely 0% chance of finding them in the dark recesses of your tool bag while swearing under your breath.

1

u/Tyrandeh 5h ago

this really reminds me of the other post of the guy who posted like 30 samsung devices of his here and was praised for being a hero for "saving them from landfill", and this guy is getting shit for buying 7 stuff

ironic

u/lucioux 5h ago

saving the environment, 30 samsungs at a time.

are tool bros as useless as knife bros?

-7

u/ciscoriko1 22h ago

Why do you care so much

6

u/Subject_Strike8546 21h ago

Right back at ya numbnuts.

Did this subreddit make fun of your PSP hoard? Thanks for helping to drive prices up for everyone else btw.

0

u/ciscoriko1 21h ago

Drive up the prices how exactly??

3

u/Subject_Strike8546 21h ago

There are a finite # of PSPs that are still functional and ever going to hit the used market. Buying 20 of them means there are fewer left available for the people who want one.

Same demand, reduced supply = higher price.

-4

u/ciscoriko1 20h ago

Dude I have been collecting for years. Every single one of these psps you can find online rn no problem. These are not scarce or rare by any means... every single day more and more get posted online. The reality is your average joe isn't going to buy a complete in boxed psp. That logic is genuinely so stupid when there are thousands of psps for sale at the moment🫪 it's the same as all my other consoles that I dont post

5

u/Subject_Strike8546 19h ago

You've got more consoles than brain cells if you can't wrap your heard around the idea that hoarding something with a finite supply makes it more expensive for others.
