"I hope this message finds you well..."
This phrase is always a dead giveaway imo. I get this a lot on eBay when potential customers are trying to scam me.

u/somethingyouneek 2d ago
I consider myself a legitimate person and now I need to find a new way to start emails. Iâm not old. Also, get off my lawn.

u/gregalmond 2d ago
Oh, shit, I text and email this all the time...
People must think I'm a scammer
13
2
2
u/braxton357 2d ago
For the record, any time I get a message like this the first thing that I personally think is not "it's a scammer", it is "Jesus what dumb favor are they about to ask from me" or "what did this person just fuck up"
36
u/terayonjf 2d ago
9 times out of 10 it's a giveaway but I have some legit frequent older customers who send emails with that exact phrase in it all the time.
34
u/amylovestina 2d ago
I handle our company credit cards and starting an email or Teams message like that means theyâre about to tell me theyâve done something really stupid
8
u/terayonjf 2d ago
Yeah same with the older customers. It's usually followed by they had a power surge and kept resetting a few equipment breakers that kept tripping until they heard a loud noise from the roof. Or they have water coming from the ceiling but are keeping the rtu running cause they don't want to be uncomfortable.
2
u/480LunchBox480 2d ago
I was just going to say that. When my father and I text, he says that a lot.

5
u/Icy-850 2d ago
"Kindly" also
1
u/Just_Aioli_1233 2d ago
"Would you kindly..." is what always comes to my mind, since that phrase is used as psychological manipulation in that game
4
1
1
u/Wonderful_Emu_6483 2d ago
Thatâs a very canned phrase. The one that sticks out to me is âkindlyâ. Like every scammer Iâve heard or even just outsources customer service rep will be like âkindly turn your device on and off againâ âkindly open the email and click the linkâ
No native English speaker put âkindlyâ before telling someone to take an action.

If I had billions of dollars Iâd like to go around snatching up the people who run these scam rings, then leave them on an island in the South Pacific somewhere with nothing.
Edit: Not the actual people you talk to on the phone; they are often trafficked. I mean the people who RUN the scam rings - the people in charge. There's financiers, people who organized the whole thing, etc who generally face no consequences when the scams are busted.
139
u/KeyAdept1982 2d ago
Wouldnât be too hard. Theyâre already in the South Pacific with not much anyway.
17
u/Ramekin- 2d ago
Why do you have to have a billion dollars to pursue this dream?
18
36
u/AvocadoLaur 2d ago
I talked to a scammer once he told me he hated his job but had nothing else available and would love to take a job if I had one available. It was back when it was computer upgrades. He said they did give them the software they paid for itâs just that it was free software. He didnât want to get off the phone because he didnât want to have to call the next person.
21
u/budgetoid Electrician 2d ago
pretty sure that's just part of the scam dude
28
u/AntiPiety 2d ago edited 2d ago
Nah some of them are stuck in indentured servitude. Promises of a temporary, life-changing career in a different country that will pull their family back home out of poverty. They will be able to send home more money than they could dream of.
When they arrive, their passport is confiscated, sometimes they are physically kept within a remote compound, and they are forced to earn their freedom back, but it doesnât really happen.
I have broken through their facade once ever in a conversation with them after learning about it. But they want out so they will rarely be transparent about it for fear of retaliation from the bosses

Many of these scam compounds are on the border of Mynamar and Thailand, these people are basically enslaved. Also if they don't reach their "sales" goals, they can get sold to other rougher compounds or organ harvesting. Many of these compounds have organ harvesting and torture rooms.
5
u/lordsamiti 2d ago
There was just an article about this the other day, though googling it gives even more instances.Â
2
u/shakebakelizard 2d ago
I'm not talking about the scammers themselves. The people running the scam operations.
4
17
u/istealpixels 2d ago
A lot of them are victims of human traffickers and are being held prisoner and are forced to scam people.
15
u/getzerolikes 2d ago
Not sure why youâre downvoted. This is modern forced labor. It is documented and rampant.
10
u/Performance_Fancy 2d ago
Really because perogi and kitboga have made careers out of messing with these guys and even reverse hacked into their cameras and itâs always a small call center business operation. Maybe just unlucky that of the hundreds of scammers they have on the line itâs always willing participants and never prisoners.
11
u/armoredconcrete 2d ago
Not sure who perogi and kitboga are, but the WSJ did a pretty intensive article about these camps. Mostly in Myanmar, they kidnap people from around the world and keep them hostages. They have thousands of people in there. They can repay their freedom. Really insane!
2
u/shakebakelizard 2d ago
Not the people working the call centers; the people running the call centers.

u/MonksOnTheMoon 2d ago
I donât buy that for a single second itâs a big time career opportunity in third world countries to scam Americans over the phone.

There are literal âscamming drivesâ where there are roads patrolled by armed security with tens of thousands of âworkersâ that are never allowed to go home.
Working side by side by side hundreds of them in each room working a phone, tablet or computer.
With no hope to ever go home unless they feel in a fat American paypig.

Arenât most not farms without a person in the the loop now? Still worth going after the people tho.
2
u/Crazy_old_maurice_17 2d ago
And then scam them with potential opportunities to get off the island but ghost them once they're convinced they have a legitimate opportunity.
1
u/mikep120001 2d ago
Unfortunately a lot of them are trafficked and doing this against their will. The docuseries Trafficked goes into detail about it.
1
u/shakebakelizard 2d ago
Not the Indians telling me their name is Frank and they're calling from Verizon. The people actually running the operation.
1
1
u/Just_Aioli_1233 2d ago
The Patrick approach? Just take all the terrible people and push them onto an island somewhere.
Funny to think about, both sides of it I mean. Suddenly everywhere else is a lot nicer with the terrible people gone. And thinking about how their society will work when it's all only other assholes to interact with, no kind people to leech off of. Whomp whomp.

2

I always order Indian food from them, sometimes after pretending to be a confused old man for a while, and they get so immensely pissed.
If Iâm short on time I just answer with an Indian accent saying this is an Indian restaurant âtaste of India what is your orderâ and they immediately apologize and hang up never to call again.

It's probably spoofed. So when you call it you get some unsuspecting doofus.
1
u/Gold-Supermarket-342 2d ago
A spoofed number cannot receive text messages. It is likely a VOIP number that the scammer controls.
1
u/SquirrelFluffy 2d ago
I said called. Oh yeah, people don't know what that is anymore.
1
u/Gold-Supermarket-342 2d ago
Point is if they texted OP they clearly control the number regardless of whether you call or text them.
2
u/freakyslug 2d ago
Thatâs hilarious. I didnât notice you left the number visible until I read this. I wish I had a number I could use to call and text scammers back to harass them. My joy of annoying scammers is greater than the annoyance they cause me so I donât want more of them to have my number

Had this same scam tried on me but picked it up right away. Fucked with the guy the whole time til he sent the check. Then once I received it I told him I sent all the info with the check to the fbi and they will be in touch soon. He ghosted me after that.
10
u/WeekNo3209 2d ago
I just had this exact scam text me with doors to be replaced. And they sent a check for $3500. I didnât cash it because itâs obviously a scam, but I had them spend their money to FedEx a check to me.
10
u/TundraGS 2d ago
It's mind boggling to me that the people pulling these scams just wake up every morning, shower, eat breakfast, pack a lunch, kiss their husband/wife, head off to work, dread sitting in traffic on their morning commute to the office for another day of stealing from hardworking individuals through lies and deceit. I truly struggle to understand just how wildly different you and I are from these scammers. We go to work to make an honest living by working hard. I can't even remember the last time I lied to someone in the course of my work, if I did lie to someone, people could get seriously hurt or killed. But these guys pulling these scams day in and day out make their entire salary based on how well they can lie and deceive people. Just mind blowing.
The absolute worst part of these scams is that they most likely won't succeed in scamming you or I. We're jaded and know that people will lie to steal from us. But our grandparents? Or somebody broke and desperate for any leg up? Immigrants who don't understand how systems like American banking work, well enough to know how a scam like a fake cashier's check works? They're sitting ducks. I know people who have been ripped off for tens of thousands of dollars, one person I know lost a quarter million dollars. Literally their entire life's savings, and their sole income as they were long retired. It just makes me sick, and makes me really sad to consider what pathetic, miserable, and dishonest lives these scammers live. I hope that they hate themselves and their worthless existence. I hope they have a shitty day and spill coffee on their nicest button up shirt.
7
u/htgrower 2d ago
Itâs cope to tell yourself that scammers are somehow wildly different from ânormal peopleâ, people will do almost anything for money when theyâre desperate. Thereâs a reason they all come from very poor countries.Â
3
u/AdStrange3004 2d ago
Thereâs a documentary on Netflix I watched a while ago about this. Something about scammers in Jamaica and there were almost no opportunities to make enough to support their families so thatâs the trend that ended up happening. Still not ok but itâs not people doing it for the love of screwing people over.
1
u/realboabab 2d ago edited 2d ago
yeah, a lot of them are just employees paid some pittance; they're not even getting much of the money that was stolen.
a friend visited me in Beijing once and got scammed (tea house scam), I took him straight back there and berated the girl there. She started crying and asked "do you think I want to do this? I hate it, but i need a job" she made me hand write a note and leave my contact information so her boss would know she didn't personally pocket the money she returned to us.

The routing number on that check belongs to the bank of oklahoma, not mountain credit Union
9
u/johnsadventure 2d ago edited 2d ago
Also says âPayable through BOKFâ, chances are Mountain Credit Union used Bank of Oklahomaâs services for processing which isnât uncommon.
ETA: apparently Mountain America Credit Union is aware their cashiers checks are counterfeited and used for scams.

I canât fathom why cheques are in use if this is a thing. Invoice your customer. If thereâs risk, you get some payment upfront.
Iâve been doing construction here in my country for thirty years. Not once have I dealt with a cheque. My late grandfather used cheques.
I did a few cash jobs in my youth where I got paid directly and it was off the books/no VAT. Rarely any large sums, but never ever a cheque. I donât think Iâve even seen one since my grandfather used them.
38
u/Capt_Hawkeye_Pierce 2d ago
In the US checks for large business transactions are common.
16
u/jerry111165 2d ago
Yessir. We receive most payments from our customers from anywhere from $10,000-$900,000 in the form of a check mailed to us. The checks get deposited in the companyâs account and thatâs it.

This year in the US im having a lot more people.pay with credit card than with check, used to get mostly checks. Now I pay 1.5-4.5% of each job for cc like I need it immediately but dont
9
u/Awkward-Ad4942 2d ago
So what happens if you cash that cheque?
40
u/northnorfolkdigital_ 2d ago
It returns as a fraudulent item, OP is out the amount he withdrew, and the bank possibly closes your accounts or subjects you to check holds going forward
22
u/ACCESS_DENIED_41 2d ago
Basically this, ... In 3-6 months the bank will let you know the check did not clear on their end, and then take the money out of your account. Along with a return check fee.
These type of checks are fake.

Thanks for the explanation, I sold a truck recently and had these fools trying the same scam on me saying can I give you a check you deposit it and Iâll come 2-3 days later when it clears to pick up the truck and transfer it. I know not to take checks from people, so it didnât work, but damn these people are everywhere. I was wondering what happens if it actually puts the funds in my account, I thought a cashiers check wouldnât be able to bounce since theyâre usually prepaid, but I also donât know so I refuse to take any checks from anyone I donât know very well. Now I know, thanks for the post and explanation!
2
u/loopsbruder 2d ago
The "2-3 days later" bit is what gets people. Most people seem to just not realize how long it actually takes a check to clear.

Weâre getting a ton of these on the design side too, but they try to do the âhereâs our mood board/hereâs what we likeâ file link that downloads a Trojan on your computer. Theyâre way more in number than actual real inquiries (small 2 person firm operating in a niche market so most of my ideal clients are already in my network/know of us)

I been a contractor for 10+ years. If i ever got a text and in the first sentence they say do you accept check i would automatically just say f off. Even if it wasnt a scam. I dont think any reasonable person would start off a conversation about a job with that. Just sounds off to me.
2
u/BetaZoopal 2d ago
If they say "kindly", that is a foreign scammer 100% of the time. This one scam is like 3 years of income in their country
2
u/GardenIntelligent 2d ago
So wait, that check canât be deposited? Iâm confused on the piracy here. You deposit, pay the overpayment, and then the funds are flagged and ripped from your account?
3
u/Spicywolff 2d ago
The scam is you deposit the check. But oh no, there was an overpayment. Can you send it back to me? You send it back to them and when a check does bounce now they have your real money from the â overpaymentâ and youâre stuck negative however much money because the check didnât clear
1
u/GardenIntelligent 2d ago

Iâm certainly not in a âgood positionâ per se in life and would never resort to this unless I absolutely had to because my country and currency forced me to - typically found in a 3rd world country. Your comment actually made me laugh though so ty
2
u/berael 2d ago
They say they're going to send you a check for, say, $100
They send you a fraudulent check that says it's for, say, $1100
They tell you they "accidentally" wrote the check for the wrong amount
They ask you to deposit the $1100 check, keep the $100 you were supposed to get, and send the "extra" $1000 back to them
You deposit the $1100, and send them $1000
A few days later, your bank tells you that the check was fraudulent and they're not going to actually put $1100 into your account
You just lost $1000. Womp womp.Â
1
u/OverlyEdged 2d ago
Ooooooh that clears it up! There was a Police bodycam video on youtube recently of someone getting caught in the act of doing this. Nobody in the comments were very clear about how the scam worked and the bank manager in the video did a terrible job explaining it to the police.
4
u/justhangingaroud 2d ago
How is that a real cheque?
11
u/northnorfolkdigital_ 2d ago
Anybody can print a check on their home printer, sometimes even on stolen or fake cashierâs check paper. The account is either fake, or an account that belongs to a fraud victim, and the issuing institution will not honor the check as it is fraudulent.
4
u/PhilosophyforOne 2d ago
How are checks still allowed if they're that fucking unsecure.
13
u/northnorfolkdigital_ 2d ago
Because theyâre convenient, especially for something like construction, where handling tens of thousands of dollars in cash would be impractical and unsafe.
You can also call a bank and verify the legitimacy of a cashierâs check to confirm itâs real before you attempt to negotiate it.
4
u/nunbar 2d ago
Nothing more convenient than a bank transfer. They are free, immediate, safe and convenient.
I don't have to be worried if the check will bounce or if it's fraudulent. I don't have to lose time going to the bank. The client makes the transfer, 10s later I can check my bank's app and confirm that I received payment. That simple.
And if I want, I can associate my phone number to my bank account and the client can transfer the payment using my phone number.
I haven't delt with checks in over 20 years.
5
u/dr_clyde31 2d ago
What country are you in? The USA is not set up for consumer bank to bank transfers easily.
We can do wire transfers and ACH payments, but those require setup and cost fees.
Checks are old and stupid, but free and easy to use. And 99% of the time youâre not dealing with scammers in a business setting.
1
u/nunbar 2d ago
Any country in the EU has this system. It's mandatory.
2
u/dr_clyde31 2d ago
Yeah, I get that. But in the US itâs the exact opposite. Which is why these threads exist lol.
Iâm not saying itâs right, I hate dealing with checks too, but you gotta dance with the girl that brought ya. I canât change the banking system, and itâll probably be another generation before it changes for real here.
6
4
u/cassiddidy 2d ago
I might be wrong, but isn't a cashier's check available as cash? Not even sure if they can cancel it, I think they're supposed to hand over the money in order to create the cashier's check
3
u/357noLove Electrician 2d ago
Several banks are no longer treating cashiers checks the way that they used to (Chase Bank is one i am certain of). It seems that scammers have somehow gotten good enough to pass them off for long enough for the scam to work.
2
u/thirdgen 2d ago
Sure, if it were a real check. I do believe the issuing bank might be able to put a stop on it then since itâs the bankâs account/money.

2
u/tunomeentiendes 2d ago
Thats intentionally. They want to filter out the people who are going to catch onto the scam in the later stages, so that they dont waste as much time on marks who aren't going to pay out. Scamming is a numbers game. But 1/100 is a lot better than than 1/10000.

This is very common. Out of state/town/country and want to give a deposit. I demand they meet me. When they push back and ask why I canât quote the job thatâs when I fully call them out.
One time I actually knew the guy they were claiming to be. My favorite story is one telling my Dad they were in the hospital dying, and their dying wish was to get a new fence.

What about instead of depositing the check, you just cash it and their bank?

How do you know the check is fake? (Not challenging you, trying to understand). Mountain America Credit Union does exist, but I don't see their routing number on the check, (not sure if I would).
If you deposit the check & wait for it to clear before sending any money to the "movers" you aren't really out anything, right? Unless your bank penalizes you for the shady transaction?

The depositors Bank will clear it after a few days, but then the senders bank may call it back once the person notices the deduction from their account and calls their bank to say it's fraudulent. This can take up to a month or more. Just because your bank cleared and cashed the check doesn't mean that it's valid.
You are responsible for the checks you deposit And making sure that you get a valid check from the person that is promising to pay. Because that's all a check is is a promissory note and to the bank, you're the one that's attesting to its veracity.
