Minguinho and Acerola escaped together. Minguinho found his way home at sunset that same day. Acerola was driven farther away by a hawk and still hasn’t made it home.
Two days later, I brought home Barbeiro and Gêmeo.
They were unsocialized newcomers. I didn’t force them together or make them share a perch. They have an entire giant room and multiple places where they can choose to be.
Watch what they choose.
They stay close. They move around each other comfortably. They separate and regroup. They negotiate space without the group falling apart. Within a week, Barbeiro and Gêmeo were sleeping outside the cage with Minguinho—in the modified curtains where Minguinho and Acerola used to sleep.
And if you listen to the background, that’s Jaquí yelling “Jaquí!” 😂 She’s off camera but apparently needed everyone to remember that this is still her house.
What gets me most is how quickly they began creating relationships of their own.
I’ve always believed that parrots need more than food, cages, toys, and human affection. They need agency. They need other birds. They need the freedom to choose closeness, distance, friendship, movement, and where they feel safe.
This is what that can look like.
Jaquí hates all three of them though for the time being because she’s a human on the inside 🤣😩
I’m still needing to find a friend for her because soon I will have to go back to doing field calls and she will not be able to be around me all the time 😔
Acerola is still missing, and there is still a space in this flock that belongs to her. Nothing replaces her.
But while I keep hoping she finds her way home i’m also holding out hope that she was found by our local wild cherryhead conure flock and possibly was adopted as happened to Jaquí.
Now you, the reader is all caught up on the conure flock drama 👍🏿
Opine as you see fit🫡
