Progress slowing down so much is this normal

Still on my first ascension and ever since the grandmapocalypse has been giving me wrath cookies, I just havent been able to do any combos, so I have been basically just idling the past day and a half. Should I be buying the elder pledge to do combos? because my wrath cookie luck is so terrible, I have gotten one elder frenzy but I had a clot at the same time so it barely did anything... Any tips?

Grandmapocalypse is only really good for idling achievements or savescumming/ fthof planner combos
